I have used this kind of containers since 1960 when nobody would have approved this. Jams, Jellies, Applesauce, tomatoes, corn , borscht etc. lined my selves for decades.....

We reuse plastic squirt bottles for mixing our paint with floetrol for our pour painting crafts. It was either buy empty plastic bottles or buy the same bottles with ketchup in them for a few cents more...

Thank you. Lots of my questions were answered after all of these years. I'll never throw another spaghetti sauce or pickle jar away again. I hated having to toss a decent looking jar and thinking to myself, if only I could reuse this. Now I know. Perfect to can tomatoes or sauce in with new lids of course. Can you also can items like pickles or pickled beets in these? I'm guessing you're safe with most anything with high enough acid level like you would can using water bath canning should be safe?

I also save all my jars and when i get a box full, I call anyone who makes honey. They always need jars.

These will usually release overpressure inside. Put some boiling water inside, screw the lid on as best as you can. Water and steam will come out. I don't know if the jars can hold too much negative pressure cooling from 120°. The smaller TO-66 are more secure because they have only 4 threads. It is annoying that some are slightly bigger or smaller diameter than 66, and must be tossed if the lid wears out.

Clean your lid before you shut it if you have things like paint then put clear plastic rap over the glass before putting the lid back on. The plastic keeps the contents from sticking to the lid. Replace it if it tears so the lid and the rim of the glass can not touch

But I may can afford lids. Will you please do another video and show us some more details please!!! And take us through the whole process. I would love to watch this!!! Also when you order from the website do you have to buy in bulk? Can you please explain everything? Thank you so much!!!

I'm a beginner canner but I save all my old spaghetti jars, pickle jars and well any kind of jar. My aunt told me I can't reuse them for canning cause they'll shatter. So now I'm confused. How do you know which jars are safe and which aren't. All my jars have the 3 threads not continuous. And why can't ya reuse the lids? You said you can't but I didn't understand why? I've seen another channel steam the jars instead of pressure cook them or sink them in boiling water. Damn, it's hard to be responsible and reuse instead of just buying more. Lol. Thank you for educating me.

Lexie, I do not reuse the lids because that seal sits down for such a long period of time while keeping something else canned, so you can ensure it will can something else safely or it hasn't lost its integrity. Plus new lids are so cheap and you can recycle them at a metal recycling place and get some money back.

@@corkyscountrycorner1609 I get that now. Ok how do ya know which size lid it is. Do you measure it or does it say it somewhere. Lol. Sorry I know these seem like basic questions. Im trying to learn how to repurpose since I watched a horrible expose on how recycling isn't what we all think it is. You think you're doing your part by cleaning out your jars and sorting your recylables and it's not really being recycled cause the trash/recycle companies can send it to Malaysia and other poor countries for cheaper than the cost to recycle it. Mind you this was on plastics not glass or metal, but it really got me mad. How shady and greedy can corporations be. Then Malaysia just burns it to get rid of it and people who live by these sites are being harmed from it. It's just sad and disgusting. So I'm trying to repurpose as best I can. So I appreciate the advice and answers you lend me.

Just measure the top in cm the jars will go by mm so 6.3 cm will be 63mm, if you go to www.nakpunar.com it will say like 63tw which means 63mm twist lug for example.

I had wanted to know if you could reuse store jars but they try to scare you out of it. I was watching homestead tessie and she said you can reuse the store jars so I asked her how many times can you reuse them. She said she only uses them two or three times because the lid wears out. So last year I experimented and canned some apple juice in Prego jars and some using used two piece lids. I have been drinking the apple juice from both and they have been fine. Both have really good seals on them. I think that now that I know how to get new lids for them I will order me some. How do you know what size lid to get? Thanks.

What's scary is that they run my canned corn through a bleach solution before they can it!!!! What else is in there? Glad I freeze a bunch every year.

Such informative videos, thank you! Could you please elaborate on using plastic jarlids instead of metal? I'm by no means a professional canner, I just like to reuse store-bought jars of pickles and jam, to store anything from spices to liquids, using the original metal lids. However the problem with reusing the original (commercial) lids is that they tend to rust on the internal surface, after some time (yes I know you recommend against using the original lids) which undoubtedly will set off unwanted chemical reaction, causing some kind of a particle exchange between the metal molecules and the jar-content. So for some time now, I've been considering investing in plastic jar-lids instead. I realise that particle exchange also occurs between plastic and for instance highly fatty foods (oily dressings, pesto and such), but (without being an expert) I reckon that plastic is more durable and less prone to particle exchange (especially if I can non or less fatty foods) unlike metal jar-lids. Also plastic doesn't rust, which I consider a great plus. What are your thoughts on my thoughts (am I completely off)? 😀 Thank you inadvance!

Hello Janice, if you have a CM ruler you can measure across the top of the jar rim. The lids ar measure in MM.

Nakpunar has a sample of each of their lid sizes available on Amazon. You get one of each size available for around 20 dollars. It might pay to get a set of those to keep on hand so you know for sure before you order.

So question about the Classico jar. They have the amount market on the side and it also says mason on the other side. What size lid would that one need? Will I be able to reuse Classico jars for the pressure canner?
@corkyscountrycorner1609
@corkyscountrycorner1609 3 жыл бұрын
You will have to get a CM ruler to measure across the top of it. Also I would not recommend pressure canning with it unless it is on a low setting. One piece lids are never good for pressure canning on high, due to them not being able to vent properly.

Patricia... I have been saving and re-using the Classico jars for 30 years. I recently pressure-caned ground beef in Classico Mason jars and they turned out perfect. They take the regular small-mouth caning lids and rings made by all the companies like Ball, Kerr, etc. I am in Canada and we make the Bernardin brand here and I used those. I also use the Classico jars for spices... I love glass jars so much better than the plastic ones that spices often come in when you buy them. I also use the Classico jars for freezing my home-made vegetable and fruit juices when I go on a juice-fast. They never break if you leave a 1 inch headspace before freezing and they also self-seal with the original lids when you freeze them.
