YAY Cathy, go you!!!! That makes me so happy to hear, woo hoo!!! And I agree, start slow and eventually you'll see how quick you get at it. In the beginning, they review and grade almost every assignment you do so I recommend taking the shortest and easiest videos so you get a high grade each time. Note that on the weekends, there are not many assignments available (as you get more assignments, you'll eventually become Revver plus and get access to better jobs like old tv shows! Once I did a bunch of I love lucy episodes and Mr. Rogers, it was great!). But until then, just stick with any ones that aren't too complicated and once you get there, it starts to get a lot more fun. There are usually plenty of jobs Monday-Thursday :) Thank you for all your well wishes and congratulations once again! Have a great weekend!

You were right about the guide you sent me. It must be a revised or updated version. The one I have says to use [Voiceover] but the one you sent me nays [Narrator] which is what Rev said they wanted. So I will go by your guide, keep on praying, and hope for the best. Thank you very much! Ah yes, I think that was the mistake. While you need to switch and write a new dash every time a new speaker starts speaking, you don't need to identify the speaker if they are visible on screen. Have you seen my videos on getting accepted into crowd surf? It is easier.

I'm having a lot of fun. I've been taking all short videos. Took my first up caret video yesterday, got dinged for it, but the forum advised me to dispute it because I was SOOOO careful :( I was really down about it, but the forum is truly a great place to learn and get advice on the spot. Thank goodness my metrics were high so it help to not tank my grades. I don't know if it will help to dispute the video, but I must have looked that video over 5 times before I submitted it. I don't know, we'll see. I'm such a perfectionist that it really bothers me. I just want to learn from it, whether it gets changed or not. It was only a 5/3/5 so not too much damage, but ...oh well...enough whining...lol...just thanks again for all your encouragement here. Who knows, maybe I'll see you in Rev sometime. Cathy Cavender I have had several videos where I disputed it to no avail and was super careful too! Don't worry about it, that is still a solid score and you have some leeway! You can also contact a "Rev expert" if you are really stuck in a video and they will help you out if you give them a time mark on the video where you are stuck. :)

Hey, this was very helpful to me. I am a beginner at Rev. It helped me tremendously. But, one thing I didn't really get from the tutorials, is how you sync with words that are on the bottom of the screen already. You know, how do you keep your captions from covering up the words? I would appreciate tips.

Use Ctrl+6 to make the "^" symbol, then you'll realize there'll be a ^ flag marked the caption group you typed and once you sync, it will pop on the 1/3 top of the screen instead of the bottom 1/3

Yay! Go you, congratulations!! I don't have a video on how I do taxes since I just pay H&R Block to do my bookkeeping for me. BUT, I know they list it as "self-employment" income. The good thing is you can use things like a new laptop, keyboard, foot pedal, etc as a full or partial write-off if you're earning some form of income online. It's worth getting a tax professional to do it IMO.

Just a warning for others…I haven’t used my Rev account in several months so my account is basically “brand new”, since your score is calculate over the last 120 days. I watched this video to brush up because it had been so long since I’d captioned. My wifi went out in the middle of completing my project, and I ended up being late (but within the hour after the project was due). I now have a warning on my account because it shows that I have ZERO on time projects within the last 120 days. If your account is new, that penalty will hurt you. If any more of my metrics fall below the mark within the past 120 days, my account will be deleted. Not blaming this video, but I wasn’t rushing to get it done because I was under the impression that it was no big deal if I was within that hour. My fault, but I just don’t want anyone else to have that false sense of security, haha. Anyway, thank you for the tutorial! It was a helpful refresher.

I passed and it was not worth it. The money is too little pay for the extended amount of hours you have to work. For example, they give you a file that is one hour long, and it may take you 5-12 hours to complete. (They give you up to 12 hours depending on how long the file is) to complete the file. Also, they don't care about you as a worker. If you mess up, they just kick you off the platform without any assistance or guidance on what you did. You probably are better off not working with them. I would suggest find another company but get some real reviews. Also, check the Better Business Bureau. You will see they have many bad reviews from people.

Quick question about when you caption the first two speakers. From the 2nd sentence we know the girl's name is Erice and the lady is her mom, do we not have to put the speaker ID's at the start of the caption? Your video's are really hulpful and professional, thank you Jennifer! :)

Hi, Sara! Thank you for your kind words. You only need to put the Speaker IDs if you cannot see the person speaking on screen. If someone is talking, and you can see who is talking physically on the screen, you don't need to add a Speaker ID. You just need to add the dash/line.

Jennifer, Iam so , impressed with how you teach these lessons . You, do such a great job teaching. I hope I can ask you , a question? Now , is there a big demand Captioners verus Transcripitons ? It doesn't look really hard, I'm not burning up the typerwriter either. Now, is there an Exam for this position as there is for a transcripitionist ? And, how is the the pay and the amount of jobs? Thank you so much! I loved your video. You went at a moderate pace and you were easy to understand with your calm soothing voice. Great teacher. The errors you corrected was also a learning tool. I applied at Rev. Twice as was denied for the transcription job. I believe I failed because there was a 3rd speaker. He almost sounded like the second speaker. After reviewing you awesome video, I think I am more interested in applying for a Caption entry level position. I am more visual and I think I would enjoy it better. I have no experience with Caption except what you posted. Can you please recommend the first step and other videos or references to train myself thoroughly before I apply with Rev? Also, if I apply with them for Caption, will they know I applied twice for Transcription? Or is that an entirely different recruiting department? Thanks

Thank you so so much for your kind words, Pate!!! I had troubles with the transcription test at first, it seemed I had done EVERYTHING right, and was shocked as to why I wasn't approved the first time, and then they randomly contacted me to say I had been approved. Captioning, on the other hand, was MUCH easier to get into. I got in first try. I believe it is a separate recruiting department, and you can apply to Captioning even if you didn't get accepted into Transcription with no restrictions. Before getting started, I would recommend reviewing the style guide which will help you pass since they explain all the rules for captioning do's and don'ts: cf-public.rev.com/styleguide/caption/Rev+Captioning+Style+Guide+3.4.pdf Apart from this, every platform for captioning is different, so after reviewing the guide, I'd just take the plunge and start the test!

Hi Jennifer, thank you for this awesome video. I just finished my Rev test and this tremendously made it easier! I have a question though (and I don't know if I'm going to pass the test cos of this). In this video tutorial, the name "Erica" was given on the video. Should I include the 1st name? - [Erica]? What if there is a "Pre Existing Text with the name of the speaker", should I include the names? or just a simple "-" will do? When should I use - [Name]? Thank you very much! God bless you

Hi! You're very welcome! So, you only need to include the [Name] after the dash if the speaker who is talking is NOT visible on screen. So if a person starts talking and you know her name is Erica but you can't see her on screen, then you could put - [Erica]. But if the person is visibly talking on screen, you don't need to put anything after the dash.
