Let’s be honest here, Saleen is the reason or the first of the modern builders or manufacturers, like Hennessy, Roush, Lingenfelter, Steeda etc. Shelby was everyone’s daddy, but he was probably more inside Ford, but still the First. Calloway was close but much more limited and expensive. It’s also one of the few cars you can see a couple hundred yards away and know it’s a Saleen. Unlike a lot of these guys, Steve Saleen raced and won with his cars, along with other people winning. I believe he was the first to make his own car, the S7, that was raced and won also. If you bleed blue, he’s on Fords builders Mount Rushmore, along with Shelby, Roush and Tasca. Great get Evan.

Had an 01 Saleen Speedster in my younger days and it was absolutely a badass car. Never had 1 issue with Saleens build quality. Steve and his crew know how to build amazing looking cars and they know how to build them better than production quality. I think I need to get back into the saleen game. Great vid Evan.

Honestly you should. I don’t know if it was the other mags testers were scared to break the new car or what, but I remember you testing the terminator when it came out and running maybe 5-6 tenths quicker than your contemporaries. (12.3 - 12.4 is sticking in my mind) even the F body twins vs the 01 cobra. I think you were at 13.0 when the other guys were at 13.7-13.8s

It’s crazy how that car is 475bhp. “Base model”, when one of my favorite Saleen’s “2005-2009” only had that much power on their top models, and they were supercharged. I do miss the older style front bumper with the tooth style vents, and still prefer how they use to extend the rear tail light panel to match the rear bumper. But it’s still a sexy car that I would love to own.

I would just buy a new GT with Performace pack, Magnaride, and active exhaust then add the ford performance pack 1 for 360 bucks from CJ Pony Parts. I think you would have the same HP numbers but not the exclusivity of a Saleen. My rides are a 2010 Grabber Blue GT500 and a Triple Yellow 2016 mustang GT premium convertible. The Saleen seems to be a nice set up. I just personally prefer Ford Factory vehicles.

Deceptive on the pricing. The reality is the Saleen basically costs $10k+ above the original MSRP of the mustang. You say it's $51k, same as the other mustang you first drove, well then that other Mustang must have a ~$10k higher MSRP as it came from Ford. Obviously they are not the same base cars. Additionally, people don't pay MSRP for regular Mustang GT's. You always get them for less than MSRP. So at the end of the day you are really paying like ~$12k to $14k for the Saleen parts swap, tune and Saleen name. Remember too, all the original parts that were swapped out still have value, and you don't get them. Saleen sells them (possibly right back to Ford).

Steve is not accurate as far as pricing is concerned. They take a base model GT and for $50,000 it would be the same price as a premium Mustang GT. You would have to examine what you're getting from Saleen to being standard or optional on a premium package car. For those sending their current year model Mustang to Saleen, if you have an optioned out premium they're going to keep your parts(Performance pack wheels, valvetronic exhaust, etc).

So to get at that price point. You get a stripper Base GT ~$35,500 and add 16 grand worth of “goodies”? Hard pass for me. No 401a, heated and cooled seats, small screen, no sync. Personally I would be happier buying a premium and paying a modest sum to improve braking, handling etc.

I’m a combat wounded veteran and I need help on choosing. Both are orange. I thinking about the 2020, because I can get it for $40k OTD. I didn’t know they still made a Saleen version. 🤔 2020 GT with ricaro cloth seats, PP2 and 301A, for roughly $45k 2021 Mach1 with Mach1 elite package, ricaro leather seats for $60k

First, thank you for your service, it is very much appreciated. I think it comes down to which car you like better (I know, vague answer). The Mach 1 has a more aggressive look, the PP2 is understated. The PP2 doesn't have the coolers like the Mach 1, but if you're not going on track it won't matter. I think the Mach 1 will have better resale, so the extra $15,000 shouldn't be a concern (just my thoughts). Personally, I like the Mach 1 better, but the PP2 is a close second.

The base stick gt he took in was about 35. A pp1 base stick is about 46. Depends on dealer mark up too. Was surprised he didn't use brembo calipers in the front like a pp1. Automatic is about $1600 extra, active exhaust is a g. I just bought a slightly used 400a pp1, been looking at stangs and pricing for about 4 months. I love the car it's phenomenal. Feels like more power than my old windsor built 306. Way more top speed too. These new coyotes are legit. Can't beat the optional extended warranty upto 8yrs 100k miles.

For that GT to cost $50k like they said would take almost every option, and it didn’t have every option because it didn’t have the GT Performance Package. You could really get the GT-PP with no other options and MSRP was under $45k. I think they were comparing a GT with a lot of options to a White Label with no options. …And the WL they *showed* has an optional Saleen color which costs thousand$$$. It might have been better to compare the White Label to a Bullitt. Then the WL has the advantage of being available in more than one color 😁

As of 2018 the (Chinese) MT82 transmission has several upgrades. It also has a big gap between 3rd and 4th gears, so you lose a lot of rpm with that upshift. There still isn’t anyone saying it’s the equal of the Tremec in the Mach 1.

Great question. Having driven them within a few weeks, I'd say it compares nicely. Both have improved handling over a base GT and a PP1 and they have unique styling, which is always subjective. I didn't drive the Saleen on track, but feel it would do well You do get the coolers and the GT350 transmission with the Mach 1, but at a higher cost. Power and sound seems fairly close.

Someone needs to let Steve and his crew know that these aren't 302's anymore. They're 307's. That 302 sticker on the fender is kind of an embarrassment to their expertise.

Why is it an embarrassment? Manufacturers have fudged displacement for decades. I'm sure they are aware of the actual CID, but 302 is a classic Ford engine size and 307 is not and "most" enthusiasts would rather have it say 302. Yes, i get it, but it's a matter of marketing. The Chevy 402 was marketed as a 396, etc. I see your point, but I think you're being a tad harsh.

I would prefer the stock GT. Those summer high performance tires that come on the Saleen suck. My 2019 Z51 has them and they go clunk, clunk, clunk on a cold day when you start out.
