REVan Evan and Abe Tango take a look at Dave Henderlong's 1988 Turbo Coupe that has an affordable 7.3L Ford Godzilla engine swap. Dave ran 10s at 125 mph his first time to the track and we think it can go 9s with a few basic modifications and some tuning.

'87-88 Turbo Coupe are my personal favorite. The 7.3 engines are a no brainer now in my opinion. They are built stout and have so much potential out of the box. I have two BBF powered vehicles so I love to see Ford get back on the tracks again and see Ford powered builds again. I am so bored with LS engines in everything. It's not much fun like that. They finally threw us a bone again and the price is very tempting.

If you plug the stock Godzilla numbers (430hp) and car weight (~3100lbs) into a 1/4 mile calculator it says 11.2 - 11.5, which to is still impressive for $10k all in. I know I've spent a lot more and accomplished a lot less in the past. It would take about 475 wheel hp to get to 10.80, and maybe his exhaust setup and removed cats/emissions are worth that much?

I'm really surprised it MPH that fast with a 3.73, I would have thought a taller axle would be the ticket with a huge tq, huge ci, lower rpm, stock engine like that. He should put a bell mouth on that throttle body, maybe make a scoop to ram some air in there, would probably help a lot past 70mph, especially once it gets a cam/springs and headers. Hopefully he opens up the ring gap this time if he turbos a SBE engine. I don't buy an issue with a stock LS/LT ring pack other than the gap being too tight, dudes are making 1000+ at the cranks very easily with LS/LT engines that only have cam/springs and vct/AFM delete. The record for a SBE 4.8 is 6s so, no there's nothing wrong with the LS/LT the Godzilla is just new and different and BIG.
@DJhenderlong
@DJhenderlong 2 жыл бұрын
LT piston and ring pack is significantly different compared to the LS. I think they took a lot of durability out on the important internals. But added cost for the DI. The LT uses a low tension top ring and piston is very weak. 700 is about what we see the limit on the boosted LT 5.3l stuff.

He can get the car a little lighter if he gutted the doors and just left what he absolutely needs for the window to go up and down and then put a piece of sheet aluminum or carbon fiber over it to close it back up that is probably another 100+lbs out of the car just from the doors and along with the cam swap he should go for the BTR intake and then do all the little tips and tricks that Brian Wolfe talked about doing to his to make the engine stronger and last longer and I would eventually put a Haltech ECU but until all that happens he needs to throw a filter on the throttle body so it doesn't catch any bugs

Had a turbo 5.3 L83 in it, and blew it up at 21psi. Did he take the pistons out and put extra ring gap in? Don't rip on the engine unless you're going to build it right. If he plans on putting a turbo on the Godzilla, he's going to get the same result if he doesn't put in more ring gap. .028" would be about right.

Any boosted engine needs ring gap Regapping stock rings on any junkyard engine to 025 to 030 keeps the rings from butting and seizing in the bore Any stock engine has tight ring gaps for sealing There is no real increase in blow by at increased ring end gaps That the pcv system cant handle so Yeah

I've got a real mystery! A 1872 Hubbard's brother Bible. In it are full marriage records about full. Documents of how it was torn in a cyclone in 1902. Two separate accounts of that. Also two letters from congress and high up congratulating the original owner who's name I Won't disclose. But there seems to be no record of this guy? Real mind bender I havnt been able to solve for years

Ten thousand is not a budget to me even though this was a cool swap, we go 10s on motor with a stock short block , ported e7 heads , a duel plane intake , 750 carb and a Anderson cam , i feel bad seeing guys thinking they need to spend big money just to go 10s but i like your video good job you can check our car out at Grover boys racing green gangster Adam Grover on youtube

Just to be clear 10K is the total including the car and all parts, not the cost of the mods. the engine is 100% stock down to the truck exhaust manifolds.

Terry, your build would cost $10,000 if you started with nothing. Any clean Fox is $5,000-8,000, add a nitrous kit, good clutch and parts to make the trans and rear reliable will be a few bucks. Then you have to fill the bottle every 3-5 passes. This is a combo that can literally go hundreds or thousands of runs with and occasional oil change. Plus, the stock 5.0 bottom-end is going to fail eventually in the 10s. I’ve raced them for 30 years. They are a thin-wall casting and tend to crack even with perfect care in building them.

@@revanevan Love the concept dont want to try and bash you or anything. I wish i could send a private message but I think your a smart guy and definitely know your stuff. But i think you're missed the mark buddy, that is a gutted car. Terry's sons car went 10.80s with a sbe 302 with ported e7s and a cam for years lol. It's been 9s on the bottle and it's a stick car on top of that. I get your saying it's budget but a 302 can do the same thing with the right tuner. My car has been 12.10s with a stock 302 intake exhaust stock t5 stock clutch, 430 gear spool 31 spline axles c clip eliminators and suspension I have 4 grand in my car everything was used. 2800lbs race weight. I'm a fat mf lol I think my car will go 10s with a cam and heads then go into the 9s on the bottle. Again not trying to be rude or bash you like I said everyone has their own opinions you have yours i have mine. Can't wait to see it go 9s definitely allot of improvement that can be made. Best of luck Evan!

@@revanevan i love the content but i gotta disagree with that due to the fact ive done it for cheaper and never broke a 302 block. Stock t5 stock autozone replacement clutch ive been 10.70s so you dont need anything to crazy there. The rear would be expensive for a stick setup needing a spool axles and c clip eliminators to be bullet proof, auto setup you can get away with a factory 8.8 welded posi trac and a used set of gears. I would say this is budget compared to a late model engine swap maybe like the new chevy lt1 or coyote etc maybe. Thanks for the content and keep the videos coming!

As stated in the video, this engine is used in many common applications. Pickup trucks, Medium-duty cab/chassis, motorhome chassis, etc. Eventually, the used market will be flooded with them. It may not necessarily seem like a "budget" engine right now..... But it will be!

How much did Furd pay Chevy to license Chevy's patented canted valve technology...for use on the 385 and 335 series engines? Or did Furd get to use the tech for free because Chevy gave Furd a Mystery Motor...thus more or less sharing the tech prior to patent application?

@@p1315 Odd how people want to make up what they want, no not Ford's junkyard, you can imagine anything you want if that makes you feel better about what you have accomplished yorusef. As far as the 385/335 series goes I have no idea if there was a patent issue, as those were long before my time and if you have the patent maybe you can share, but I would expcect that it is no more than GM paid Ford when they used the 6 bolt deep skirt bottom end on the LS. But at least I can use my name and not hide behind a code mr P 1.
