A HUGE change I’ve noticed since I started running this year is that MY CALVES GREW!!! I’ve been trying to figure out calf training for awhile now but adding some running (very little around 3-4 miles a week) literally grew my calves significantly when combined with my calf raises. I’ve been a volleyball player with very fast twitch long Achilles tendon calves for most of my life so the adverse stimulus has helped a ton.

I am Proud owner of the book Sweat, and I am one of those pre-beginner lifters who at the age of 37 have been to the gym for years moving weights without really lifting with effort. I consumed a lot of @GVS content, improved my effort and BOOM, started my noobie phase transition. Started around 25% body fat (inbody770) I am doing a cut/maingain, with boostcamp Rampage program - I see fantastic results and the mirror looks fantastic at 3 months in. The thing I had misinterpreted, or I had not understood correctly is the following: I just need to do the program with best effort, and that is it. For next week, I do not have to "work harder" to lift more weights. I have to work similarly hard, and the mucle growth is what allows me to add weight. Somehow I had a mindset that I would need to constantly up the effort to lift more. No, i just need to do the same, eat well, sleep well, stay healthy, rinse and repeat. The effort (for noobie) stays the same from week to week, and the weights increase.

this is a golden nugget of a video! ive had issues with my work capacity lately and barely did cardio since i started lifting 5 years ago. i was swimming and cycling for a years before that, so maybe thats why i could make the progress in the first place?? especially when it comes to "the burn", the assessment of low cardio holds very true. time to up the dose! not to mention cardio's effects on longevity and healthspan! unpopular points since most of us lifters are young and dont know yet why we should care about that stuff lol also would like to point out how social media keeps focusing on those niche hypertrophy topics like emg studies, lengthened partials and "natural limit" instead of taking a step back and looking at other factors impacting muscle growth. thanks for the video!

Yooo geoff, you are a dckhead for the intro😂😂, had me for one sec. But seriously, If I may share my experience. I have done muay thai and kickboxing for years and now I am focusing primarily on bodybuilding, hitting the heavy bag with a combo of kicks and punches is the best cardio ever, a combination of slow and fast intensity, very easy on the joints, and give you the work capacity of a farming horse. If someone has never done it before, it might be of your interest to learn the proper technique for a couple of months with a striking coach, but once you learn the how to, it is the most fun cardio ever and you can get a crazy workout in as little as 30mns.

My best on the treadmill was a 7:30 mile just last week and that was murder lmao. Sometimes my lower body feels absolutely cooked from heavy squats and deads and accessories, so those days I don't run, but I wanna get to the point where I can at least do a mile when I feel like shit and go from there. I completely agree! When I was younger, playing all types of sports, mainly ice hockey throughout my youth and rugby in high school, I loved to run! People thought I was nuts when I would go out and run because it was fun. In my mid-40s, I haven't done cardio other than walking in about 10-15 years, due to some injuries. When I was lifting in my 20s, like you said feeling burned, it never happened much, unless I was going above 20 reps. I would get the wobbly legs and feel like I've just received new limbs and almost falling over sometimes, but never the burn. Fast forward to now and I can barely get 15 reps done and my legs are burning like mad! I knew it was because of cardio, but just never put enough care into it like I did when I was younger thinking if I just keep my reps a bit on the higher count I could forgo the extra time needed for cardio. Once I started doing more than just walking though as I was able to start jogging again without pain in my left ankle, the burning started to subside and actual muscle fatigue was hitting again. The reason I would rather go out and jog is, I spend too much time inside and still find it enjoyable.

All running has done for me is make my legs more powerful, calves grow, increase work capacity, and allow me to eat more and still burn fat. Without losing any gains at all

I did cross country in high school, I now train regularly (usually to failure just to ensure the stimulus is appropriate), and I eat a lot. I am absolutely not huge by any means. I wish your skinny cardio kid theory was true.

Hey geoff, this was a needed video for me since I am a cardio SLACKER, but I have a question for you: what are the optimal timings for cardio? Before working out, after? Should I hit it at different times from lifting?
@dynaspinner64
@dynaspinner64 7 ай бұрын
When you get time. You can implement cardio into your everyday life. Walking more is one example. If you are doing high intensity cardio, probably after a workout or 10 or something hours before. I just jump rope during my rest days twice a week for 6-12 minutes.
@nomebom7140
@nomebom7140 7 ай бұрын
I really wouldn't recommend doing one after the other, it normally affects tremendously the later session especially leg day, do them separate from one another with either time in between for rest or straight up different days if fits your schedule
@GVS

Different times if possible, if not, I prefer after.

Honestly, start by tracking your daily steps and getting that to 6k per day... I was doing LISS twice per week for 30-45 minutes at a time a few months ago and it definitely made a difference but when I started tracking my steps like a month ago that is when things got a little crazy with my work capacity, don't overthink it just avoid being a couch potato and actually track your heart rate while doing cardio if you can to make sure it is actually cardio (50%-70% MHR for LISS but you want to be at least around 55% for aerobic endurance gains because walking at 90 beats per minute is just slacking off/waste of a treadmill and then 70%-95% of MHR for high intensity portions of HIIT)... LISS and HIIT will get you to the same place assuming you apply the same principles of volume, intensity, and frequency you apply to lifting to cardio (so like 50 minutes at 50%, 30 minutes at 55%-65%, and 10 minutes at 80% provide roughly the same vein gains)

I am doing three hours of biking cardio per day plus 30k steps on top of lifting 6 x per week. I built up to this, but I am also getting stronger at the same time on my lifts (no I am not a newbie to lifting either). So don’t let anyone tell you cardio can’t work with lifting.

At the start i didnt listen i couldnt get through workout because id literally just run out of steam, then I started doing my cardio just under a month ago doing 5Ks every Saturday and im assuming itd abit of placebo and actual changes to my cardiovascular system but YEAH, my workouts have improved alot i feel like a GODDAMN STALLION, but now i probably smell like a horse too after a run but thats besides the point, DO YOUR CARDIO

Training ultra runner here and this year I have focused more on building muscle & getting stronger. Cardio has definitely made my work capacity insane. so Balancing heavy weight or more reps and speed runs or long runs recovery is important. Running before or after lifting days or on the same day seems to speed recovery from heaving lifting. Thanks for great laughs and reminder that cardio is a great option for gains.

I do cardio quite regularly. At one point I was alternating between 3 and 6 mile runs, but then started doing 1 mile runs solely for a specific reason. Now I run a mile before leg day, and despite what some people say, I am better warmed up and do much better squats and other movements than simply relying on dynamic stretching. NOW as a caveat, I don't run a mile and then start doing squats 5 minutes later. It takes me about 10 minutes to drive to the gym and another 5-10 minutes to find an open rack and start doing dynamic stretches and warm-up sets. On average, by the time I end my run to my first working set, it's probably 20-30 minutes. I don't run before upper day only because those days are long and I don't have the time. On my rest days I usually do 2-3 mile runs with the ocassional 6.

Yup. I am always cycling as a European city-dweller, so I have half an hour of cardio MINIMUM, most days more close to 1 hour, on weekends often 2-3h. I don't gas out in training, I see tremendous growth in my legs, so even this "much" cardio does not seem to interfere too badly with training.

Epic video Totally agree with all points, iv been doing cardio since my competitive judo days and it never stops muscle growth and like you said and if anything naturals will grow more when they implement cardio (after the shock period) than if they just do weight lifting. Cardio 3-4 days a week bulking or cutting 👌💪
