As a Chinese, I absolutely do not want anything woke in a game based on one of the four classic literatures of my culture. Journey to the West is based on mythology with Sun Wukong and his quest for the sutras with his master, there's no need for "female characters" because it focuses on the Monkey King and his journey of growth. There's no records of any trans characters ever showing up in the story, and I'm glad the devs didn't cave into pressure. Will definitely be playing this when it releases.

Depends on perspective. Having your game covered by IGN or Kotaku is just free exposure at this point because they are always involved in some kind of drama that never stops trending. Chances are Wukong would have never gotten this popular without their involvement, so in a sense they actually did the devs a favor. There's two ways to get more sales; good reviews from trustworthy sources, and bad reviews from those everyone despises. If nothing else, this only shows how rage-baiting people into buying something out of spite is a very valid and successful tactic. How long until the industry starts doing this more often? Or perhaps they already do and we're all being taken for a ride...? 🤔

For me personally, the very first time I have EVER heard about Black Myth Wukong was when they said the won't be working with Sweet Baby and I was IMMEDIATELY interested in the game before I even knew what kind of game it's gonna be. And from the overall feedback on the internet I think everyone thinks the same - Sweet Baby being involved = bad. That simple. And if gamedev studio actually comes out and says they literally rejected their "help" that makes the studio almost god-like these days. It's quite sad, but entertaining at the same time.

Just so everyone would know, the Chinese government has a vested interest in preserving culture, such as having media portray either traditional clothing, being set in a historical setting, or portraying old mythological stories (which Wukong is one of them - from the epic: Journey to the West). The Chinese government do give subsidies and/or monetary support for studios who are keen on developing or producing entertainment media that portrays Chinese culture. It is quite likely Game Science studio has secured funds from the government to develop Black Myth, and with that, they have stipulations from the government to ensure such portrayals do not stray too far from historical accuracy or, in this case, from source material. Being a historical epic written in the past, Journey to the West has quite little fem-coded characters, other than characters like the Goddess of Mercy, White Snake Spirit, Princess Iron Fan, and other smaller demons, usually a succubus-style spirit. The side characters Wukong usually meet are demons, spirits, or smaller deities, which are often depicted as old mountain sages. Asking Game Science studio to change or adapt their game to include fem-coded characters where in the original epic has little of, is basically asking Game Science to forgo the subsidies or face penalties. But of course, leave to the westerner journos and their fanatics to ignore anything cultural and just jam modern politics into a game which is trying to portray arguably one of the MOST FAMOUS epic coming out of Chinese literature. The arrogance of westerners never fail to astound me. Also for clarification: I'm not a Chinese citizen from China, but I'm quite familiar with how many of the Asian game industry work.
