The best reverse reverb I’ve used is the Keeley Loomer (or Realizer which only contains the reverb side of the Loomer). Another great reverb for shoegaze is the Earthquaker Afterneath. I’ve also found that blending tape echo and chamber reverb with a chorus and either light boost or compression really does a great Cocteau Twins sound.

I don't know if anything Andy recommends here is that excessive (pun intended). You don't need these pedals for shoegaze, but these pedals (mostly) have many more features than say a Boss DD-7. I'd imagine it might be less headache than tracking down those old rack units and discontinued pedals that MBV and Slowdive etc. used also. But, you should check out the Zoom CDR. You can stack up to six effect types and create some really cool gazy/ambient tones. I discovered a patch on the Zoom reddit forum that emulates the Soft Focus patch in that old Yamaha unit Slowdive used on record. For $100 new it'll certainly do the job, though you may may want to upgrade later.

Will Reverb delve into the Tom Scbolz/Boston formula? I myself have discovered through tinkering with my Boss ME-80 that the Metal Zone and its unusual range of EQ is capable of emulating the early Boston guitar sound and elements of the Scholz Rockman Sustainer module p, just by rolling back the gain to somewhere between 3 and 5. The chorus and delay speak for themselves. Haven’t totally squared away the compressor envelope, but I’m getting closer. I bet you guys/gals at Reverb could do better than me at assembling the sound.

Surely it's a genre more associated with the late 80's and early 90's than the early 80's? But I guess you could definitely argue that early stuff by bands like The Cure and (as you mentioned) The Jesus and Mary Chain planted the seeds for shoegaze with the washy effect laden guitars. I think dream pop as well as US indie rock bands like Dinosaur Jr and Husker Du were also big influences on the genre. There's also influence from psychedelia and EDM in there too I think, especially with the likes of MBV.

David Cassette Yeah, you’re right. I was misremembering. Thinking back I didn’t graduate college until ‘87 which was when I saw Spacemen the first time. And ‘85 was the height of goth. So yeah had to be more late 80s early 90s. Thanks for clearing my mind for me :)
