🤦🏻♂️ Who would off-road the GX460. These vehicles are to built to stay on pavement. If you use these vehicles how they are built it will last for decades. They are not designed to pushed through these unrealistic conditions unless you want spend thousands fixing them prematurely.

Ah yes, the GX460, famously built to conquer the treacherous terrain of suburban parking lots. I’ll be sure to keep it safe from those terrifying gravel driveways. Toyota must’ve really wasted money on that 4WD system, crawl control, and locking diff just for curb hopping. Thanks for the wisdom, Captain Pavement!

Unrealistic conditions? Let’s expand on that a little. The GX based on the Land Cruiser Prado is used to haul a family in to the bush and is depended on by thousands globally. What’s unrealistic is getting your name spelled correctly as you order your venti macchiato in the Starbucks drive-thru. Pffft. I guess Lexus missed the direction of its customer base with the latest generation.

Congratulations. A great choice for your purpose. A high clearance front bar, rock sliders, a suspension lift, and off-road tyres, and it'll be a very capable off-road rig (to compliment its on-road touring comfort and luxury). In Australia, we never got the GX (only the LX), but its Toyota Prado cousin is very popular. It's common to see Prados here with suspension lifts (50mm), 35" tyres (both maximum legal limits for public road use here), Maxtraxs, and/or RTTs. And most Prados have the spare wheel carrier mounted at the rear door. Giving our Prados dual fuel tanks from factory. The underslung tyre carrier was only offered as a new variant on the last two face lifted models. Aimed more for urban dwellers. The new GX550 will be the first GX to come here. It'll be interesting to see both GX550 & the new 250 Series Prado side by side. Looking forward to see how you'll turn this into an off-road weapon. 👍

That’s awesome! It’s a lot of work getting 35s on the GX, so I wonder if there are some other subtle differences. I wish it came with the rear tyre carrier. Land Cruiser Prado 250 was my first choice for our second vehicle, but I couldn’t justify the price.

Make sure what you intend to do with it before selecting a front bumper. A bumper trim or CBI Covert will work okay for general overlanding, but if you intend to go on, say, Hell's Revenge trail in Moab, you will not have enough clearance. Ask me how I know...
@RevereOverland7 ай бұрын
Interesting. I took my 4Runner through Hell’s Revenge with just a mild lift and stock bumpers, so I had hoped the GX could do it with a lift and the slightly higher CBI bumper. I’ll give it a go. If it doesn’t work out, I can always switch to a more aggressive bumper!
@stevecarlson23467 ай бұрын
@@RevereOverland Yeah, I had high hopes too, but a few years ago when I took my GX460 with 2.5" lift and trimmed front bumper through HR I must have dragged nose or trailer hitch what seemed like 50 times (which was hard on the nose trim... a bumper like the Covert would have held up better). Since I have an annual trip to Moab that is important to me, I decided to go big with 35s, Victory Strike front bumper, and Coastal 4x4 rear bumper, etc. which have worked well. MTS actually does more than just set how aggressively ATRAC kicks in. Mud/Sand has a slower throttle response than normal but also allows a ton of wheelspin and tries to keep all 4 wheels spinning the same speed. Also the only mode you can use in 4H. Loose Rock is like normal throttle, ATRAC on. Mogul I think specifically looks to clamp lifted wheels, and then Rock mode will basically try to prevent any wheelspin anywhere. It works best with center diff locked and at less than ~4000 rpm. At high rpms, it reverts back to just killing power in an attempt to save your tie rods.
@RevereOverland7 ай бұрын
I always thought it affected throttle control, but couldn’t find any evidence or details from Toyota/Lexus.
@ryanschmid79407 ай бұрын
@RevereOverland you can feel it if you switch it on/off or between modes quickly. I feel like Toyota hypes up crawl control and just casually mentions MTS even though it is far more useful. You just have to have the slightest idea how to drive off road and then take time to figure it out since Toyota doesn't actually explain it.

It looks like you filmed an ad for Lexus as their products can be 'really' used. Well done! I traded my GX for an LX and further limited the LX's off road chops by adding a knockoff TRD body kit but I do not pretend I'll ever take it off road. Best I can do is a gravel parking lot, sand, or grass. I do put it into 4LO when on unimproved surfaces to make sure everything still works, especially the tighter turn radius feature where it drags in the inside rear wheel on a turn to tighten your turn.

I have 3 friends who have had iron man who have recently switched away from them due to poor performance and quality not holding up. Also don’t forget to pickup some bits from Dr. KDSS to compensate for the KDSS system. That depends on how much you want to spend fixing it! I replaced the differential gear oil after this, but was going to anyway since I have no record of when it was last done.

No! Don’t do the Ironman. Do Dobinsons. IMS is decent mid-level. MRR is baller and adjustable. They can’t be beat for durability.

I have the MRR’s and really like them but Ironman FCP are also very good.
@RevereOverland7 ай бұрын
I love the Dobinsons MRRs, but didn’t want to spend that kind of money on this build. The FCP from Ironman is supposed to be a solid mid range choice.

@@RevereOverland I have FCPs on my GX460 (front only). Have a spacer installed in the rear with stock setup. Did the install myself - very happy with the results with using Ironman's Foam Cell Pros with heavy rate springs. I have some videos on this ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqutY42MZcenpa8 and kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJ7EpJV7p5tqmZYsi=dS_sxFYQ9mdV0d89 ) and was influenced by Kai's videos: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWKVq3lnZ7qheJIsi=-591LgpYSQdB3BYU and kzbin.info/www/bejne/nISwiKpshbaJiK8si=0TGVZTAurYtaZzxe

Get rid of that hideous lower front bumper, add some sliders and slightly larger all terrain tires, and you are good to go. For those looking at buying a GX, compare it to a 10-15 year old LX before you buy. Also, IMO, there is no comparison between Lexus or Land Cruiser, and Jeep. One is focused on off-road travel, the other on highway cruising. But for a cruiser, the Off road capabilities of the Lexus are likely going to get you where ever you want to go short of rock crawling. And I have heard that the newer jeeps are prone to breakdowns. My LX has survived four trips to Moab so far without any mechanical issues, and the six hour drive back to Denver was a breeze. But I do stay off most of the difficult rock climbing trails. Elephant Hill was the toughest one I tackled, with just an occasional rear bumper or exhaust pipe scrape.

I looked at a 570, but decided to do the GX since it would probably be more relatable for the channel!

Nope! We traded it in.

Mall machine. Not liking this. Love the Tundra however. A step back from the 4 Runner and Jeep. Don't hate, just my opinion.
@RevereOverland7 ай бұрын
It’s definitely not as capable as either the Jeep or 4Runner stock. With a lift and some tires it should match the 4Runner’s capabilities though.

@@RevereOverland isn't gx460 full time 4 wheel drive while the 4 runner is 2wd?
@RevereOverland7 ай бұрын
The 4Runner has part time 4WD (not for dry pavement) on most models. The GX is full time 4WD and has a center lock.
@sheldonc74127 ай бұрын
"mall machine" you Americans are so dumb, you know nothing about great, tough off-road capable vehicles. A gx460 aka landcruiser Prado is one of the best made SUVs on the planet! But Americans had to fussy it up, hence the Lexus treatment.

So basically pay a ton of money for a GX 460 for what a stock 4 Runner can so at half the cost. LOL
@RevereOverland5 ай бұрын
Half the cost?? A used GX460 is cheaper than a 4Runner. After adding a front bumper and rock sliders I’ll be similar capability and about breaking even with the cheapest similar age/miles 4Runner we found, which was an SR5… and now I have a V8, KDSS, full time 4wd, cooled leather seats, a decent sound system, and quiet and refined ride. This is far nicer, and a much better deal.

@@RevereOverland A used GX 2023 is still $60k. A pavement queen it is. Nice, quiet, cute, luxury road queen for twice as much as a REAL 4x4. Apples to oranges. Granted if you want a SUV road queen with KDSS then the GX 460 it is. Very great shopping mall crawler. LOL
@RevereOverland5 ай бұрын
Like I said in the video, ours was $25k. The cheapest 4Runner in the same age/mileage range was an SR5 for $27k. All I have to do is remove the steps and make a quick cut to the front bumper to make the GX slightly more capable than that 4Runner - they're very similar underneath, but the 4Runner doesn't have KDSS. A built GX and built 4Runner are going to be basically the same, but I still have KDSS, where the SR5 doesn't. I also have an extra $2k to spend on mods.
@mongoosevsgt5 ай бұрын
@@RevereOverland Well, the ironic thing about a "luxury" vehicle is that it would lose that much resale value even with all the cute luxury option The GX is limited on aftermarket suspension upgrades. Also, the 4runner 4x4 is ready for off-roading out of the box. With bigger wheels on a GX 460 and bigger engine, V8, the trans gets hotter and needs serious mods.
@RevereOverland5 ай бұрын
@@mongoosevsgt I don't think you're very familiar with the GX, because pretty much everything you've written so far has been wrong. It has the same suspension options as the 4Runner... it uses most of the same part numbers from Ironman, Dobinsons, etc. The V8 and 6 speed transmission are far better at handling larger tires than the 4Runner's lethargic V6 and awful 5 speed. I don't know if you've seen my videos before, but I ran a 4Runner for years. I have the same size lift and tires on the GX now as I did on my old 4Runner. A modded GX is better than a modded 4Runner.
