Mary T. Newport, M.D. became a messenger in 2008 when she found a nutritional intervention that supplied ketones as alternative fuel for the brain for her husband Steve Newport with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Steve responded dramatically to consuming medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) from coconut oil which produce ketones when consumed. Two years later he improved again in a pilot study of one person consuming the Veech ketone ester…this ester added twenty more months of stability. Together these solutions gave him nearly four more better-quality years.
Dr Newport practiced neonatology in Florida for 30 years and served as founding medical director for two newborn intensive care units in the Tampa Bay area. After taking some time off to care for Steve, she resumed medical practice at the opposite end of the spectrum and now makes home visits with people who have chronic conditions. She is author of four books and an international speaker on the subject of ketones as an alternative fuel for the brain.
Dr. Newport is a Certified Ketogenic Nutrition Specialist (CKNS) since September 2019 through a program offered by the American Nutrition Association.

Mary, my Dad spent the last 3 years in a small, loving nursing home. After reading your book we talked to them about adding unrefined coconut oil to his meals. At this point he was almost non-verbal. We introduced it in breakfast and then a couple of weeks later to his lunch. We did try the dinner but it affected his bowels and I knew he would probably adjust but I was so thankful they were willing to do the 2 times per day so we settled at that. The change was amazing. He walked better, he communicated much better. He could once again express himself and he got his humor back. The quality of his life was so much improved. Thank You!! PS. The change was so impressive that one of the nurses there began giving it to her mother.

@@Lolipop59 I don't think your read it carefully but I will try to explain to you in more detail. We started by adding a teaspoon to his (already cooked) breakfast. We did not cook with it. After 2 weeks we added a teaspoon to his lunch. You have to give the body time to adjust to it so that they don't get diarrhea. We wanted to add it to his supper meal but it was causing diarrhea when we tried so we did not continue with that meal. Be sure to buy unrefined coconut oil. Best to you and your loved one.

I take 1/4 teaspoon turmeric, less than a 1/4 blaclk pepper, 1/4teaspoon ginger, 1/4 teaspoon cinamon and smooth it on bread. I cover the mixed powders on the bread with a about 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and turn it into a sandwich. This is part of my breakfast every morning. Of course I may use an egg or cheese etc. I am a very old person and my cognition is quite good - I even write a column for the local newspapers. The turmeric with black pepper is essential to allow the turmric to ingest. The natives of India eat curries every day with turmeric and the oil they use is coconut oil and they have the lowest Alzheimer rate in the world. I am writing from Guyana where we produce those powders as well as coconut oil so these things are very inexpensive.

Neither would take alternative therapies seriously and it was the saddest process to watch, esp knowing there were things which could help. I do take some MCT oil powder in my coffee and sometimes cook with coconut oil, mostly I like using lard for frying, or butter for eggs. I really notice increased energy too. I eat meat every day and a wide variety of veggies. Cheese and nuts are my snacks and I have learned to minimize them. Keto makes it easy to eat less if you want to lose weight. I try and eat the cleanest and healthiest food I can. I do take some suppliments, Vit D, Nutritional Yeast, Magnesium, Zinc. I lift dumbells to keep my strength, do lots of squats and ride an indoor bicycle. I take long walks with my dog each morning before the sun is up. I go to bed early and sleep very well.

My dad was my caregiver, and we both laughed at the idea it would work, but I tried it anyway. Lo and behold...within 2 weeks we noticed significant improvement. I am 72 years old. About 25 years ago I began suffering from similar symptoms. Fortunately I had read a book about nutritional supplements when I was about 26, but because I had no health issues that required nutritional supplements, interest in the subject faded and I had lost the book. However, I never forgot what the author had discovered. Soon I was experimenting with various supplements to try and improve my concentration/memory. At that point kept a list of the ingredients that supplements had - and usually bought anything that I thought might help. Then one day I bought a multivitamin with an ingredient that none of the others had. In less tha 30 minutes my concentration switched on dramatically. For quite a while that solved my problem, but then they removed it from the market. I continued my research and learnt enough to realise that coconut oil (pure) would probably help. That together with two or three additional supplements has restored my mind and concentration to a point where I can now remember fine details of my childhood. In fact, it is no exaggeration to say that I am able to 'switch on or off' my Alzheimers like symtoms. Coconut oil is certainly one of the essentials for those who wish to avoid dementia in old age.

The Vitamin was B15. In my 'research' I found that a B Complex tablet that included B15 had a 'miracle' effect. None of the other B complex vitamins produced the same effect. I know of only two brands (in my country) of vitamins that used that formula. During the years that I used the first brand I was quite unaware that other B Complex tablets did not use the same formula. Then they took it off the market and my concentration/memory problems began. Because that didn't make sense to me, I began to keep records of the ingredients of all of them while also reading extensively about cell biology. I also made notes of the role that vitamins and other elements played in the functioning of healthy cells. When I finally found the missing link, I had already acquired sufficient knowledge to understand that B15 in itself is not sime magic vitamin. However, it is an essential ingedient needed to trigger certain essential processes in cells. If a Vitamin B complex tablet does not have it, the benefits of the other vitamins are very limited - i.e. in respect of solving he problem that we are addressing. I might also add that there are a number of other serious health disorders that can be traced directly to the absence of sufficient amounts of B15 in modern diets.

Same happened in Sri Lanka. People used coconut oil to stir fry and deep fry food but when Western physicians wrongfully blamed it to increase (LDL) bad cholesterol levels which they blamed to cause heart attacks and untimely deaths. People threw away coconut oil and stood in long queues to buy imported corn, or vegetable oils. They cut away coconut palms and neglected coconut cultivation. Even to this day Sri Lankans consider their ancestral food as inferior to those recently introduced by foreigners.

Don’t just rely on MCT oil go extreme if you are trying to help your sister. Eat high fats, protein and 20% carbs she will naturally produce keystones. Advocados, eggs, fish, wild rice (not brown or white), legumes especially chick peas and black beans, lentils, cottage cheese, olives, medjool dares (taste like toffee, natures healthy sweets and they don’t spike blood), all nuts especially walnuts, macadamias, pecan, Brazil, etc, all seeds, herbal teas, coffee with full fat cream or MCT oil in morning, cacao and dark chocolate. Just educate yourself as these things work and I’m speaking from a position of authority. I don’t have AD but I have systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) just lately haven’t taken my immune suppressant meds and I’m feeling great whereas before the wheels would start turning backwards. Best of luck but extreme is best way to go for results before too late.😊

I live in Indonesia. I take 2 large teaspoons of coco in hot water at night. In the morning I have scrambled eggs with a couple of tablespoons of olive oil mixed in. Think I'll try including a tablespoon or 2 of coconut oil . Olive oil is expensive in Indonesia, $20 a litre but coco powder is cheap around $1 for 2kg and coconut oil is about $6 a litre.

I believe that the brain and every joint in the body needs oil for it to function properly, just like a door hinge or machine that is squeaking or stiff needs oil and coconut oil is not saturated as animal fat as some people think cause your body’s temperature can melt that fat. We use coconut in so many ways. The young coconut water is good for nerves, the milk we boil to get the oil, we use it in our teas , desserts , for soups, stews for baking cakes and it tastes great in everything. If coconut was all that bad, why they put it in baby’s formula?

Thank you for this presentation. My memory is gradually falling. I get very frustrated when I can't find something. Ex.I looked for my debit card for four days. I found it this morning in the back of my wallet. I will definitely try the coconut oil in my food.

I saw a video about this in 2013 while going thru Chemo and began taking the coconut oil daily for the awful brain fog. I have continued to take it and cook with it. Sadly My husband's father had Dementia and two of his children. Thank you for sharing this information with us.

Reversing? Maybe not, but it does slow it down to almost a stop. Damage is not reversed though, from what I have seen. Keto, low carb, diet really helps too. Type 3 diabetes they are now calling it. Coconut oil and keto definately calms the emotional upsets.

@@janettedavis6627 It is NOT essential because you can eat fish or chicken not just red meat. C’mon now research and help yourself don’t play stupid when it comes to your health. 😊

@@11kwrightyeah it’s essential, red meat is the nr.1 and it’s more nutrient dense than chicken or fish and contain more saturated fat for your brain. You, stop being stupid .
