I review the 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X GSR. My conclusion about this car may surprise you! What would you rather have, this car or the 2012 Subaru WRX STI Limited I reviewed? This car is currently for sale at South Park Mitsubishi and the listing for it can be found here: www.southparkmitsubishi.com/Ve...
Send me a message if you're interested in the car and I'll put you in contact with the owner!

One thing that was a surprisingly large factor in my choice of a 2013STI over an EVO was that the rear seats do not fold down in an EVO. I chose the 4door sport sedan over a brz or 370z because of practicality and that has the potential to impact one's decision.

I think Subaru kind of gave up on styling once they knew the Evo was disappearing. The Evo X still looks better than the 2015+ STi's. IMHO the new STi's are really plain and boring looking. Kind of remind me of a Hyundai. The GD STi's had all the character and charm that really put the car on the map. The new ones are just meh. My girlfriend notices Evo's and older STi's but she doesn't even pay attention to the new ones at all. She is not even remotely a car person but when she saw an Evo X she asked me what it was as she really liked the styling.

I watch a lot of these reviews about the evo x and people talk about a lot of numbers and looks. what id like to be talked about is this car S-AWC/ASC and what that means. this car has three differentials, most cars have one unlocked diff. this makes for a very interesting feeling when they become active. with the ASC on in normal conditions it is impossible to crash if the driver has it pointed in a clear direction. I have tired, the ASC is like magnetic boots. Find a big clear spot for way to test this. Crank the wheel in one direction, then put your right foot all the way down and watch the evo take control. when the ASC becomes active the differential dash display is taken over by a flashing serving car symbol. it will neuter the throttle input and apply brakes. with the ASC on this car will not play. Turn it off and you find out why the CZ4A is a better hooling car then the CT9A. I wont get in to this very much as it well known the CT9A is faster in a straight line. now back to the test, same inputs and now the car lashes out, and the differential display in the dash remains and shows what each of the three diffs is doing. now you can control the car with the throttle, very rear wheel like. there is a strange feeling about it. like it begins a balance on the zenith of oversteer and understeer. at some point you will pull to much G and go out, but long after you would expect it to happen. the feeling im trying to describe is the time between what you think should happen and when the car lets it happen. you would think it would feel very mechanical, but it does not it feels very analog. Id like to very shortly talk about the settings tarmac-gravel-snow. essentially it controls the diffs and their mechanisms to lock and how the S-AWC reacts. sometimes like in heavy rain you very well might run the gravel setting. or in very sandy areas run the snow. I at times feel car reviews don't hit on a lot of the things that I would myself like to know. I now 98% of people just want to know the basics, but miss stuff like the nissan GT-R has two drive shafts I want to know that data. that's just me thou. I love my evos and its a car everyone should drive at least once.

I personally own an evo x and I have driven an STI. It is funny at first before i got a chance to drive either I used to think the comparisons were fair. After Owning my evo and test driving an STI I've realized they are entirely different cars. People that want to drive a race car on the street and wouldn't mind a lot of noise in exchange will be happy with the evo. In the evo you sit low, the steering ratio is quicker, the seats are borderline racing seats, etc. The STI you sit up in what feels like much higher so its much more comfortable, its way easier to drive, the flywheel is heavier, the throws are shorter, its quieter and feels that they didnt sacrifice any comfort for performance. Both cars are awesome id be happy with either. Just fate had me chose an evo. On some days I feel happy i own it, but sometimes i wish i had gotten the STI lol.

I bought a '13 STI and I couldn't agree more. 2 of my housemates have Evos and we all have days we would rather switch. With some light mods, the STI stays a good daily driver but I see my housemates taking their SUV a whole bunch for day to day drives.. :/ Just did Accessport, air intake, catback exhaust, sway bars, end links and shifter bushings and it's absolutely perfect.

I"ve always loved the Evo's. I had a Evo IX MR a few years back and it was my favorite car I ever had. I'm big on car interiors and was disappointed with that, but I can honestly say that once you start driving, you completely forget about it. I miss that car, really thinking of getting an Evo X or 2015 STI this next spring.

I agree, this Evo X is one awesome car. I would also pick this Evo X over the newer STi w/o a 2nd thought. I would only think about it if the STi still had the '07 styling. Even Evo IX, VIII; etc. owners should trade in their old models for this newer one, otherwise you all have major inferior cars. This Evo X is in a completely different class than its predecessors.

Nice review, thanks. I own an Evo 10 GSR with the manual transmission and it's a fantastic car. It's fast, quiet and comfortable on the highway (with the wife and kids and a trunk full of luggage) and is an absolute blast on back roads. The twistier and bumpier the back road, the better the Evo becomes. Yes, STIs are fun but they don't have Mitsu's sophisticated all wheel drive and traction control system. Carving through the twisties and balancing on the outside wheels at full throttle in a turn is simply amazing in the Evo. No other car is so alive to steering inputs and is so eager to change direction and carve through the turns exactly the way you want it to. This car was designed for sports car drivers and it rewards us like no other.
@tefather
@tefather 10 жыл бұрын
Good to see an unbiased opinion. I like both cars myself, but the Mitsu is the more affordable to buy and then to modify on a tight budget. I have gained an extra 50 kilowatts at the wheels with basic mods and a tune, safely too.

I would definitely prefer this car if it had a 6 speed manual transmission. Though every point you make is good. I felt the same way when I test drove a buddy's Evo X. I wished for the short shifter and a bit more noise from the turbo as well as the engine (exhaust mod). I drove a 2012 STI and loved every bit of it, especially the fact that it had a 6 speed manual but you are right about the Evo X blowing the STI in the handling department. You can really go wrong with either of these two as they dont have any other competition apart from each other. I would buy the Evo X but it would be a huge debate with myself before I settle on either one. Fantastic review mate !!

IMO, no ability to fold down the back seats is a deal breaker. I can't even count how many times I've needed to fold seats down to fit extra stuff in my previous cars. I understand why Mitsubishi did this but it more or less was one of the main reasons I eliminated it from my car buying list which is a shame because I love so many other things about the car.

FastRedPonyCar Ok, fair enough. When I had a Camry I never knew the seats folded down, and now my Evo X (like the OP already said) doesn't have them. It's okay though, my golf bag fits in the trunk and that's all that matters!

Like he said, the grip of the Super-All Wheel Control in the Evo X is pretty crazy. It took a few days getting use to.. My Nismo 350Z felt really squarely in the rear, and I was use to the back tires always breaking lose or kicking out around turns. So when I got my Evo it felt so different. But like he says, it's a blast for sure.

Hey Matt, I know it's been nearly a year since you drove the Evo X but what is your opinion of this car vs the latest WRX? At $30k, that's not going to pull a new STI but sure can buy a Premium trim WRX or low mileage Evo X GSR. Curious to hear your thoughts.

I'd go with the 2015 WRX just because it's more comfortable with a nicer interior. The Evo is fast and fun but the seats, interior and ride aren't the best for daily use in my opinion.

subaruwrxfan You, guy, are BIASED! Haha, I am too, though. I love the recaros, perfectly comfortable to me, and I have SERIOUS back issues. If this is going to be your daily driver then go with the wrx. You'll get a new car that's more comfortable, just as much fun to drive, and more reliable. If you constantly go to the track and don't drive around town too much then get the Evo.

Great review I had a 2006 MR before buying the X and I had no problems with reliability, while I have friends that their 2007 subaru STi had gear box issues during the same time.

I love Evo. its hands down the best car for the money and then drive-ability. The thing you should understand is that its not the fastest car out there, it might be out powered by Infinity/370Z and M3 and few audis and even ford taurus, but thats not the point of Evo. Evo is not fast, its QUICK. and the way it drives is what makes it unique. The closest thing to it was the legendary R34.
@RileyBassing
@RileyBassing 10 жыл бұрын
says the guy that have never even driven any of them or raced against them. stock x vs stock 370z on highway pulls its even. from a dead stop evo pulls at least 2 cars by 1/4 mile. and the M3 is a different price tag, that should be compared to gt5000 and stingrays.

Great review. Love your enthusiastic style. As mentioned in a previous comment, I have the new Focus ST. Test drove the Evo X a couple of years ago and picked the 2012 GTI instead for the following reasons that didn't get mentioned in the review. 1) Drivers seat... although comfortable and great fitting, had no height adjustment. Appears that hasn't changed as you can barely see over the dash. 2) Fuel mileage sucks. Only 22 mpg on the highway! If you do any kind of daily commute, that's a killer at $4/gal for premium. Even the new Mustang GT with 400HP gets 26 mpg.

Alex Nelson I owned a 2nd gen Eclipse. Favorite car I've ever driven, but I had to get rid of it after 3 short months because I had hoses coming off, water pump cracked and caused the car to almost over heat :/ It had small regular wear and tear like the suspension was getting a little meh (it was a used car), but loved how it accelerated. Such a blast to drive.

Alex Nelson Still tempted by the Evo (didn't come here to troll lol). But Mitsu scared me with that car. I've been watching all these reviews trying to decide on what to get in the future. The Scion frs and Subaru brz look really good for a good price. So does the Civic Si. It'll be a hard decision.

EDKsurly yes the interior is not great. It is substancialy better than the sti or wrx inteior. Also for the performance of an evo x in a audi your looking at an S4 which is what 60k new.... Not really the same catagory, then you have to deal with an audis shitty reliability.

owen allen I'm not comparing prices really, just quality. Mitsubishi put powerful motor into a Lancer. I would much rather have a S4 over a Evo or WRX. As forr reliability, you beat the snot out of any car, things will break.
