I spend a week with the 2020 Chevy Silverado LT Trail Boss with the 6.2L V8 and find that the engine and transmission are both very impressive for this segment, with strong and responsive power. Unfortunately, neither the ride nor the interior are as nice as many competitors. The Trail Boss adds some cool touches to the Silverado, but at this one's at-tested price of $59,185 the pricing is in Raptor territory, making it hard to justify the price of this LT Trail Boss. What do you think of the 2020 Silverado? Thanks to Chevrolet for providing this truck to review.

CORRECTION: On the build site it says "2-inch factory suspension lift with Z71 Off-Road Package" which I understood as the lift being part of the Z71 package, but looking at other reviews now, I see that's not correct. The 2-inch lift is part of the Trail Boss package.

Couple of points about this Trailboss: As mentioned this has the midnight package-the most expensive option you can put on a trailboss which is about $3500, in addition to the 6.2 liter which as mentioned is a $2500 option. This is what is pushing the price of this truck towards 60k. Yes a stripped down version of Raptor, non crew cab, with no leather etc, starts at 58k, which you won’t find on your dealers lot. Also GM will give you 5k off MSRP, and most people pay close to sticker on the Raptor, while certain other dealers mark them up over MSRP. Comparing the Silverado to it’s little brother the Colorado ZR2, by the ZR2’s only advantage (more off road capable), and implying that that is the better truck is a little silly, as there are way more advantages to owning the big brother. You are correct in mentioning that the direct competitor to this is the Ram Rebel- as well as the Tundra TRD Pro and the Nissan Pro 4x, but as the last two sales aren’t anyway close to the Chevy and Ram, so it’s essentially a two horse race as Ford’s Raptor is in a class above these two, and the FX4 package on an F-150 is a step beneath these two trim levels. The biggest strength of this truck is the 6.2, the biggest strength and appeal of the Rebel is it’s interior. Styling wise, it’s personal preference, but I’m not a fan of the mustache grill on the Rebel package, and overall the rest of the styling is very similar to the way it’s been for the last generation, although they gave the crew cab much more need space. The way this Trailboss sits with the midnight package, with the 6.2, sold me as you can probably tell by now. I drove them all, and I was coming from an 3.5 Ecoboost Ford (no issues), and I also own a Durango R/T with 5.7. I also looked hard at the TRD Pro, so I was completely unbiased in making my decision. They are all very close, it’s just personal preference. By seeing your face light up when you stepped on the gas and the 6.2L did it’s thing, well that’s what sold me, and that’s something you get to experience every time you drive it- on road or off.

You really need to get your facts straight. The Z71 does not come with a lift. The Trailboss does. Z71 has 2 speed Transfer case, skid plates , rancho front struts and rear shocks. Trailboss adds the 2" lift. Which consists of longer front struts ,also rancho, an altered coil spring perch height. Longer front CV shafts. The rear gets longer Rancho shocks ,a rear block spacer and specific leaf springs. The wheels and tires. We get it you aren't a truck guy. But people buy a Trailboss over a ZR2 for these reasons. Trailboss can tow up to 9600lbs ZR2 max is 5000. Neither the Trailboss or the Rebel are serious offroad trucks. They are trucks that offer moderate offroad ability, without sacrificing any of the payload and towing capabilities most people want. The Raptor and the ZR2 are both significantly down rated in both payload and towing. Not to mention having extremely experienced suspension components to replace. You're also incorrect on the AFM comment. Only the custom trim Trailboss 5.3L and 6 speed auto has the old AFM system which shuts down 4 cylinders. LT trim both the 5.3L and the 6.2L use the new DFM system, which varies which cylinders can shut down in 17 different combinations. Last. The Rebel does not come standard with the 12" screen its an option. The standard Rebel screen is 5" , then you can opt for the 8.4", and then pay further for the 12" screen. The price on this midnight edition is not representative of most Trail Boss trucks sold. I paid 51k Canadian, which would have been about 43k USD. I couldn't get a Rebel under 63k CAD with similar options and the 8.4" screen.

Thank you for the correction. On the build site it says "2-inch factory suspension lift with Z71 Off-Road Package" which I understood as the lift being part of the Z71 package, but looking at other reviews now, I see that's not correct. Thank you also for the info on AFM, I couldn't find a definitive answer. I didn't say the Rebel came standard with the 12 inch screen, I said a comparably equipped Rebel does. When you option leather in the Rebel (to match this LT), it also throws in the screen as part of a package. I know GM often gives huge discounts, but as a reviewer I can't go off of dealer pricing because that varies everywhere and from person to person. I have to compare MSRP prices, which usually puts GM at a disadvantage since they love having higher MSRPs and then relying on those "deals" to get the pricing more competitive.

Absolutely love mine. Even with the 5.3 I never find myself wanting or needing more power. The 10 speed trans keeps it in its power band and is very smooth. As for the suspension it’ll soften up around 2k miles give or take. Really noticed the difference in that. If in the market for one I Highly recommend.

I bought a 2020 Custom Trail Boss 5.3 in March and that same day they had got in a Trail Boss LT 6.2 10 Speed stickered at 62k... well after a month and a half I couldn't handle the bare bones and small power from the 5.3 in a 6k lbs. truck... so I went to look at that 6.2 LT and they were offering 12k off because of the Corona bs, and they paid all but 1500 off on the Custom so I have been a LOT happier having the 6.2, it actually moves the truck when you want it to go. I love the truck.

Matt you said the 6.2 liter gets you 35 hp over the 5.3. That’s incorrect. 5.3 is 355 horsepower and the 6.2 is 420 horsepower. That’s a 65 horsepower difference and don’t forget a 77 ft lbs of torque difference.

Have a question. You mentioned the only difference between the Z71 and trail boss package is the tires. The trail boss definitely has a stiffer ride than an LT Z71. Do you think it I put less aggressive tires on a trail boss it would handle more similar to an LT Z71? I love the trail boss but it’s a bit too stiff of a ride for me for daily driving, so trying to find a way to soften the ride. Any thoughts?

Dealers always put a TON of money on the hood of these trucks, pretty much all pickups besides a raptor, so the true cost people pay is usually 5-10k less. I just had a buddy get a $54k sticker price Silverado for $43k.

The problem with going for a Ram is that it comes with Chrysler reliability. The problem with a Raptor, (good luck finding one for 58 grand by the way) its towing rating is terrible. I certainly wouldn't want to tow anything more than a utility trailer or a jet ski with a Raptor. The suspension is way too soft. I think this Trail Boss is a good compromise between the two others. The 6.2 in my opinion is the best engine of any of the big 3.

"If your into offroading which I'm guessing is why your into the Trail Boss". Lol Matt you just dont understand truck buyers and modders. Its all about appearance and the fact "they could if they wanted to rather then would" use the capability. Thats why you see this arms race in tow haul numbers that no one other then farmers actually use. And 99% of trucks never leave paved roads. 99% of truck buyers never out use the capability of the Ridgeline, and it would cost less, and be more comfortable, and safer for other drivers. But its looked down on because it cant tow 1300000000 lbs and articulate 1 wheel 10 feet.

How many times did you punch it in "Sport Mode" and then complain about the MPG? It's also Dynamic Fuel Management and is found in both the 6.2 and 5.3 engines. You should delete this video and redo, but only after talking to Chevy truck owners who drive this truck, or at least spend a little time in the owners manual. To folks who know nothing about these trucks you probably sound knowledgeable, but to those who know these trucks, not so. Other than that, it's a well made video and you present the truck rather well. By the way, you should hear these trucks after a muffler delete...Whoa!
@MattMaranMotoring
@MattMaranMotoring 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, I drove the truck slow all week aside from the acceleration on camera. Some lower versions of the 5.3 don't have DFM but yes that is a mistake I made. Of course Chevy buyers will say great things about this truck, but I've driven all the competitors and always just provide my honest opinions. It is what it is.

@@MattMaranMotoring Truck buyers are loyal Matt... They get upset if you say things about their trucks. Only thing I'll say is Ram is going to ride more like a car, so if you prefer a car, you will prefer the Ram ride. That ride also sacrifices payload and towing.

@@JC-ej3er and I happen to like work truck interiors. Trucks aren’t meant to be fancy. I work out of my trucks. Vinyl floor and seats, I do like to have power windows and cruise control though. My ‘93 1500 is the Silverado trim line, back before the model was the Silverado. You could get the base W/T, the Cheyenne as the mid grade model, and the Silverado as top of the line with power windows, locks, digital climate control with AC, and cruise control, and it has all that. Not bad for a nearly 28 year old truck. Then there was the 454SS, but that was only a short box 2wd truck.
