Another great review, thanks for giving us such a detailed look. Was very excited to see you picked one of these up as I mentioned it on your review of the Class 800 - I'll definitely be getting both when I can, being able to learn the proper details of the models from your reviews before forking out that much on them is a great help! Thanks

Great review. Have wanted one of these for ages. But just couldn’t justify the spend having 2 kids and in current times!! Managed to get one pre owned from Hattons for £134 in Regional railways……… says pre owned but has never been run. So great bargin 👍

Thanks for the fabulous review. The motor and driving mechanism looks very similar to the Bachmann 108 which as you mentioned can be a bit fiddly when refitting the tiny drive shaft..

The lights in the cab wouldn't be on other than during crew change. The cab lights go off while you're moving as they limit what you can see out of the cab in the dark. So no cab lights is really very good detail in reality. But the gamer light modellers wont be fans
@EuviRail

Since there is no crew on this model I guess there was need for a cab light anyway!

Another good review and very fair comments. I will take a look at the Kernow exclusives. I’m always loathed to get GWR liveries having been one of their commuters for years who could not stand their service and disdain for the fare payers
@EuviRail

Thanks Stephen. Sorry to hear the service was so poor. The fares aren't exactly cheap either.

150 is a good model of a widespread DMU. I like the fact that both cars are electrically connected making shuttle operation easier. One beef I have, but not especially with you as its a common comment, is people who do not like a visible motor block. Twenty years ago big visible motors were the norm but with the comments small invisible motors were introduced. The drawback is that small motors are not mechanically robust. The old 158 was much tougher than the new 158 where I had to replace both motors on one model. Give me big motors any time.
@EuviRail
@EuviRail 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan, I had heard murmurings regarding the 158 motor alright which you seem to be confirming. My issue with the 150 is that the space occupied by the motor and gearing is about as bad as it could be. Even with the same motor they could have designed a more compact drive system which would still have been visible of course but not as bad as what we have which consumes 40%+ of the power car. I'm definitely happier with a more reliable design. Would be interesting to see what EFE Rail have implemented for their tube stock and how this holds up.
@alanrobertson9790
@alanrobertson9790 2 жыл бұрын
@@EuviRail In the old 158 they had a centrally positioned motor and 2 flywheels with gear trains to each the bogies. That's as bad as it could be! The windows were smoky. So same motor as you might get in a Class 45 pulling 2 or 3 carriages. Superb performance. If you've got hills, I haven't, or need to go on ebay that is the one to go for. We really need our DMUs to have guards compartments, like the old DMUs then you can hide the 150 arrangement. The tendency over the last twenty years has been to get very expensive models with detail to spread over the track. Modellers complain about this in the comments but all the reviewers on youtube or the modelling press want it this way. When did a reviewer ever say they wanted simpler, cheaper more reliable models. Never. Don't worry I recognise I'm fighting a lost cause.

A very fair and balanced review. I do like the model and I bought one of the Sprinter versions. It is true that the big motor block is less than ideal, but if you can ignore it then the rest of the model is very nicely done. Funnily enough the older Bachmann Class 105 doesn't make it as prominent. I didn't realise that some other versions came with passengers fitted, it would have been nice to see them in all the models (or at least the sound fitted ones which are pretty expensive to start with).
@EuviRail
@EuviRail 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments. I'm scratching my head over the passenger thing as well (and no driver of course). The sound models with an RRP over £400 should definitely have included them.

Bachmann had intended to produce this model with an underfloor motor as used on the EFE underground train. However, I think you are lucky they did not do this! Although an underfloor motor is less intrusive than the motor they have used, that would have had too little power. It seems bizarre to fit passengers, but not a driver. But maybe this model depicts a train waiting for the driver to come from the mess room to take the train out? Nice green liveried GWR finish, good if you model that region. Thanks for uploading a thoughtful and carefully made KZbin video!

The issue with a driver in double ended locos or units, which end is thr "right" end for the driver to go in? 50% of customers will be unhappy with it no matter what, this way 100% of customers can choose which end they put the driver in if indeed they put one in at all.

I feel that bachmann should try using either a verticle can motor or an "in-floor" motor bogey, much like or similar to the 'black beetle " drives when it comes to anything like these dmu's or other mass/commuter transit trains.

It's on the ToDo list when I make progress on the layout expansion. I only have two DCC circuits at present and I'd really want to have at least 3 in operation and ideally 4 so that I could run the whole gamut. Due to get new windows in the house this year which is going to delay the expansion plans somewhat. Builders and layouts don't mix well!

@@EuviRail you really have your reasons wow, and you might expand the layout in the future!! But how would you do that as you have ballasted. Could you unballast? I not very technical with model railway so I'll leave that up to you to solve.

Great video as always!! I actually have the same lighting issue with my Northern 150/2 and I emailed Kernow who I bought it from about the issue and they said I could have a go at fixing it myself but if unsuccessful, send it back to them. I had an initial look at it but didn’t know I could dismantle the support posts, how did you do that, are they easily removable?? Thanks a million! Oisín

You are right to draw attention to the poor value for money. The hamfisted motor block arangement is not acceptable at this price point. Reminds me of my old Hornby ex-Dapol WYPTE Sprinter from 20+ years ago, which was acceptable given the standards of the day and relatively low price. No driver is also a silly omission. The only versions of this I would even consider are the more favourably priced Kernow ones.
