REVIEW : Black Butler - Book Of Circus

Now that I've reviewed Black Butler's previous anime adaptations, it's finally time to review the Book Of series! Today is the season that started it - the infamous circus arc of the manga.

I like this season the best. Not because of it actually being in the manga, but because it’s writing and nuance being done well in making the mystery intriguing and creepy.

This is an amazing adaptation after the two somewhat lackluster ones. I only watched it subbed because I was excited to see it the day it came out. I did see the dub of the Book of Murder and it was excellent. Just everything about Book of Murder was fantastic. Looking forward to that review!

What a fantastic reviews and a helpful one to lead the viewer to understand in which order they should watched the series because honestly, even as a manga reader myself, I can totally understand how confusing all of this stuff can be among anime viewer. Honestly, it shocked me as to how they preferred to cut off season 2 completely and continue on with the manga, that alone is highly thoughtful of them as it's not easy to do so without rebooting the entire franchise. Up to this day, I'm still questioning if Sebastian ever did that with Beast in the manga cause yeah, that's the only thing I never expected. Overall I never really liked the circus arc but I came to love it from watching the anime because as you said, they've got time to fix it and adding up extra moment to let us understand the circus' character more in depth to the point that I do feel sad whenever I watched the ending (honestly they deserved better). Looks like we have the same favourite arc then because I also love the murder's arc due to how well they build the plot up and the plot twist is something that I won't forget. Then again,that arc is my very first introduction to Black Butler so I might be biased about it. I can't wait to see you reviewing it.

YES!!! THIS WAS INCREDIBLE!!! Your videos are sooooo necessary!!! (I was watching some of them in sequence haha) I agree with most everything you said. The only part we disagree is that the arc was well adapted. I have some problems with it, especially with the scene where Doll finds Ciel hiding and they promise to keep it a secret, I think the scene wasn't as well written as in the manga, but it's good in general. I also love book of murder! My thoughts on this arc are mixed, because I really love the mangá, but in the animation even clues were missing. Can't wait to see what you think! ♡~

Love your review of Black Butler as always. Really intriguing how you list some of the flaws with the semi reboot for the series but still pay attention to its amazing quality. If anything I agree people need to watch those episodes of Black Butler in Season 1 before diving into the reboot. Reboots are dicey sometimes but I’m glad they still acknowledge and their past anime and keep moving forward with the storyline. This story for the anime treated Black Butler seriously it changed the vibe that the first two seasons had and enriched so much of the darker realistic side of Victorian England also had a demon involved but given Dr. Faustus Is from that time period totally works. I love how they portrayed everyone in the Circus in this arc finally some insight and focus on them whereas the manga glossed over some stuff. I really love the new animation and the glow cause it has a more antique quality and just suits the time period. While I liked the original I think the characters look even better now than in the plus the development of all of them was so good and finally we see Sebastian as he’s meant to be sadistic demon wearing a facade of Butler I love it. But yeah seriously this version of Ciel is what I love about the manga as well. I love how this season is dark but it has its reason to be so and it still maintains a great balance with all the tragedy that occurs. It’s dark really dark but not dark without purpose and it’s just so splendid to watch. It’s only one story in the overall manga here’s hoping one day they do more arcs. Even though it stopped it still seemed to conclude at a good spot.

I gotta admit, Kelvin is a cautionary tale of what a simple obsession can do to a person. Kelvin is just that max to a 100. I know that people think he's more focused on Ciel (either the Real Ciel or Our Ciel or both), but he's obsessed with the entire Phantomhive Family. The way he stares at Vincent already gives me an ick and the fact he basically stalks him before getting rejected and therefore underwent plastic surgery to make himself beautiful is just a cherry on top of this so called Yandere level of obsession.

Ok this is incredibly off topic, but does anyone else think that Ciel is a lot like the vocaloid Oliver? Think about it: They both are about 12-13 years old, they both are British, they both hide one of their eyes, they both mostly wear blue, they both put up with stuff way too mature for their ages, and they're both shipped with creepy guys in their fandoms (Oliver with Fukase, and Ciel with Sebastian. I don't ship either of these but they are pretty popular).

It's a small technicality but a detail I think you might appreciate knowing: have you ever heard of someone talking about fine china describe it as 'bone china'? That's because bone, burnt to ash, and normally sourced from slaughtered cattle carcasses, was an important part of the recipe for porcelain or fine china. So it's not that prosthetics of the era were 'sometimes made of cow bones' as you stated. But porcelain or ceramic. I'm guessing you were picturing something like bone carving taking place. No, rather, they were made of either wood or ceramics, the recipe for which includes bone. I seriously doubt child's bones would produce any finer sort of china so the doctor was, I suspect, just as looney as his patron, the Baron. So the good doctor was butchering the children like animals, feeding their meat and offal to the big cats and any other carnivores about (and yes, I'm eyeing the Baron with prejudice here, because he was just crazy enough to do such a thing, don't you agree?) then boiling and cleaning the bones and finally reducing them to ash to be added into fine china recipe. If he did that work himself, and I'm guessing he did, based on the fact he was doing the mold making himself, then that would also mean they had a kiln somewhere in the bowels of Kelvin's manor, which I suspect also easily doubled as a crematorium when needed for anything else they needed to disappear. It takes damned high temperatures to fire fine china. What a creepy collection of shit stains.

I actually talked about the live action movie in my "Reviewing Live Action Anime Movies" video! :D No word yet, unfortunately. There was a musical made for what would be season 4 but so far not a single bit of information on season 4. Which is especially odd when this year is Black Butler's 15th anniversary and a HUGE event was a held in Japan that was announcing everything but an anime. Some say it was delayed due to the pandemic but I don't really know tbh
