Also glad to see you take a broader view that a wargame isn’t limited to hexes and cardboard counters, and involving the Russian front in WW2, like too many grognards whine
@ThePlayersAid8 ай бұрын
Hobby definitions are seemingly pointless and serve only to cause arguments, but for me (Alexander) a Wargame is where the primary goal of the game is some form of military conquest. That can include area control, dudes on a map, hex and counter and many other formats. Those sub formats are more tight definitions but when grogs say wargaming is also a narrow definition its seems ignorant.

Thank you Gentlemen for the upload. I’ve finished 2 sessions of the game, and I’m 100% glad with my purchase so far. When you take a closer look at the promoting of the game, you can have a feeling like someone tried to make a good PR for the game calling it Star Wars Rebellion and War of the Ring killer. I unfortunately noticed it provoked many of the staunch fans of both games on plethora of forums to become very nitpicky about Dune: WfR (it’s too streamlined, not deep enough, cards options are too much reduced, etc.). Through such approach - sitting in our trenches, being afraid that our favorite could lose the crown of the best game ever, we simply miss a basic thing - a joy from the game.

I just played my first game yesterday. The basic mechanisms of D:WfA are cool but I loved driving the narrative through playing planning cards and accomplishing the Prescience objectives. One of the most thematic and cinematic board gaming experiences I've had, especially accompanied by the epic Hans Zimmer soundtrack 😄

Great video guys, thanks! I love War of the Ring but getting it to the table is harder because of the time and complexity. I felt the designers of Dune really did a great job streamlining that system for Dune and making it feel different and unique for the Dune theme. I still like LOTR theme a bit more, but I agree I like the streamlined system here more in Dune. If they could make a 2.5 rulebook for WOTR so I can keep my painted minis with a streamlined version, it would remain my #1 EPIC.

Stumbled upon you guys, and glad i did. So refreshing to discover a natural, informed, discusion/deconstruction. Like sitting around a table with friends in a post-game discussion. Tired of bombastic channels that think they're competing with the WWE.

Makes me chuckle that you might get flak for this 'not being a wargame' when it's literally in the title and the war is the entire context of it all. I love hex-and-counters but it's nice to see something else too.

War of the ring takes a lot of reps to get down to 3 hours. I have done it. Early games were closer to 6 hours because the rules are ROUGH My point being this game is obvious less complex.

My partner and I have played 8 times now. I've only played Atreides and my partner, Harkonnen (we're trying to master each side). So far it's H-4, A-4 - so pretty well balanced! It's my favourite area control game right now. I'd also say that the thing I really like about the combat dice is that each side is either a defend, a hit, or a leader ability - which means you can never throw a fistful of misses. The only time a die can "miss" is if you throw a leader ability and have no leaders in your legion, but that's on you for taking that risk with your legion composition.
@simonb46896 ай бұрын
It's not that balanced. Harks have the upper hand by far. Probably 80-90% in good hands.
@aalever6 ай бұрын
@@simonb4689 We've found that's definitely true in the early-mid game, but if you've done things right as Atreides then the late game - getting those last few sietches - can be hard for the Harks. Atreides then have only a handful of sietches to defend, have the upper hand on sietch defence, and can pile those minis up like there's no tomorrow - and that's not to mention all the sandworms raining down hell. So as the Atriedes, you just have to focus on slowing the Harks down in those early stages, whilst getting some prescience, so that you can make the game very hard for Harks in the long run... And killing Feyd on sight.. that guy is lethal, because with an ornithopter, he can pincer three sietches, ready for a surprise attack with two hits and a defend on any one of them.
@simonb46896 ай бұрын
@@aalever you're just playing hark wrong. But they just made an official rules tweak that will fix the most dominant hark strategy (ignore spice) that will bring it closer to 55/45. Can't wait to try it
@aalever6 ай бұрын
@@simonb4689 It does seem harder to win as Atreides, that much is for sure. We're playing again tonight - what's the rule tweak? I'd like to try it. [Edit: found the post on BGG. One is the removal of the 1 imperial ban limit (great), the second doesn't seem to be announced.

No. But only because I have so many other painting projects I need to complete. They're also a smaller size so it's difficult to reuse them in any other different system, so the time input seems even less worth it.
