Thanks for this interesting review! Franck’s organ music is some of my favorite. I wasn’t yet aware that the Sainte-Clotilde organ had been recently restored. For those interested, many “live” performances by Olivier Penin are available on Vincent Hildebrandt’s excellent KZbin channel devoted to organs and organists in Paris.

Konstantin Reymaier’s performance of Franck’s Trois Pièces and Trois Chorals is what not only made me “get” organ music, but eventually fall deeply in love with it. This looks so great. Thanks Dave!

His string quartet is wonderful, and more wonderful still for how much it sounds like an organ.

Request: Liszt pianoworks arranged for organ. Recorded by brilliant classics. Its very higly rated. The only criticism is that the CD is too short.

A review request: The 13-CD box of Pachelbel’s complete organ & harpsichord music on Brilliant Classics, performed by Simone Stella.

@@LyleFrancisDelpI know this to be in jest, but Pachelbel actually wrote some good stuff other than just the Canon. I recently made an acquintance with the Naxos CD where Wolfgang Rubsam performs some of his organ works, and while he’s no Bach, he certainly struck me as someone to be explored further.

@@joonaa2751Never mind the Pachelbel belittlers. I, too, have been curious about the Simone Stella box, but have had trouble finding reviews. It’s worth noting, however, that Stella’s Buxtehude (harpsichord) and J.G. Walther (organ) have both been favorably reviewed by Johan van Veen, who specializes in early music. The Pachelbel set on CPO (complete organ works) is also worth investigating, but it may be worthwhile to wait until CPO packages those in a single box. Joseph Payne’s Pachelbel recordings on Centaur are delightful, but surely out of print. For a satisfying, more “muscular” take on Pachelbel, see Franz Raml’s two discs on MDG (organ and harpsichord). On a more obscure label, Klanglogo, Márton Borsányi has recorded two discs of Pachelbel keyboard works. I have vol. 1, and it’s some of the most lively, engaging, wonderfully played Pachelbel that I’ve ever encountered. ADDENDUM: I listened to some excerpts of the Stella, and in my opinion his playing, while very good, feels a bit staid and reserved compared to the “singing” quality of my favorite recordings (which include those by J. Payne and M. Borsányi).

As a teen, growing up in a Southern California town in the 80's that was home to a Lutheran college and a few churches with proper organs, some of my fondest memories are from hanging out in balconies or pews listening to organ recitals and secretly taping them on my Walkman (that had a microphone!). My friends all thought I liked punk bands like Flipper and rock bands like Bauhaus, when secretly it was Franck, Buxtehude, and my Dad's Gordon Lighfoot LPs that gave me the most enjoyment.

Don’t worry. Nobody actually likes Flipper anyway. I own Blow’n Chunks and Gone Fishin’, and don’t even like Flipper.

Do you own the Flipper cassette where side one runs out and you hear someone shout, “TURN THE TAPE OVER, TURN THE TAPE OVER…”?
