Thanks for a great review on this model. Its hard to find much about this machine here. Been using this model for more than two years and I think that modifying its portafilter and converting it to a non pressurized one will be much more better if you are interested in pulling a better espresso than with the standart pressurized one. On the other hand it will be good to mention that the machine has been set to 15 bar pressure where the commercial machines use around 9-10 bar which will also affect the quality compared to a commercial one. The steam wand modification which is shown in the video will greatly help improving the steaming quality of the milk if you are interested in latte art but for a good latte art the pouring tip of the milk jug used is another important thing which will make it easier to make the rosetta, heart etc.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 6 жыл бұрын
Hi SD, Thanks for the comments! Definitely can get better microfoam by removing the autofrothing wand. It takes more skill to froth manually but you can get to latte art pourable milk density. As far as brew pressure... Many machines are marketed touting "15 bar pumps". Do understand it's referring to the maximum pressure the pump can achieve. It does not mean espresso will be extracted at 15bar. Pressure of the extraction is controlled by grind size.
@M_C79
@M_C79 2 жыл бұрын
@@Wholelattelovepage I think machines like this one (I have the Carezza Deluxe too) use the higher pressure because they're also meant to take coffee pods. So the 15 bars is a compromise, not a feature. I've been trying out a bottomless portafilter with the machine. It almost works, but the pressure is just too high and it seems no amount of tamping or grind adjustment is going to fix that (although I haven't given up hope). On the other hand, we're getting amazing results with the pressurized portafilter and Lavazza's portafilter grind for double shots. But even with the pressurized portafilter, the extraction happens much too quickly, making it impossible to get a decent (single) espresso. And my dream of a creamy ristretto will never happen with this machine. I wish Gaggia/Philips would have added a 9bar/15bar switch for people who will never use pods and want to try out non-pressurized portafilters. That would have made the machine near perfect.

Hey Marc, great video! It helped me with my decision to buy the Carezza Deluxe and im loving it so far. One question: In the manual it says "please don't use a tamper getting the coffee ready"... What is your stand on that? Wouldn't I maybe get more flavour out of the coffee by using a tamper?

Hi F, The Carezza is a pressurized filter basket brewing system. With most of these tamping has little affect on the extraction. But, in my testing I was able to affect the extraction with tamping when using the Carezza. Its pressurized filter basket has a design that differs from most. I'd work with tamping and see what you get! Marc

Thanks for preparing this review there is a lot of useful information and it is well done. You mentioned that the pressurized portafilter can be used for pre-ground coffee, but does it mean that if I want to use freshly ground coffee I should use non-pressurized portafilter? or would I get good results using this machine when brewing with freshly ground coffee?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 6 жыл бұрын
Hi GK, You are welcome and thanks for the comment. You can definitely use this machine as is with freshly ground coffee. Results will be better than with pre-ground. Just no way around "fresh is best". You do need to get the grind size right. In example, when I was doing my testing with the machine I used pre-ground from 3 different roasters. The grind size was a little different and I ended up with extraction timing for doubles ranging from 15 seconds from pre-ground that was a little more coarse than the others on up to 25 seconds for the finest of the pregrounds. I also did some testing with grinding some fresh and was able to dial in a grind for a 25 second extraction. In other testing I tried tamping the pre-ground. With the Carezza's commercial style basket I found I could effect extraction timing through tamping - something that generally cannot be done in pressurized basket machines with the single tiny hole in the basket. I hope to do another video in the next couple of weeks demonstrating this capability.

Yes, it's a bit confusing in the video. The only difference between "pre-ground" and "freshly ground" is that the first is already ground for you and the latter you grind yourself. Presumably the latter allows for fresher coffee. Otherwise, it's not like the machine is going to know! If you grind yourself, you get to choose the fineness that works best for you. Maybe Marc's alluding to the fully automatic machines, which have built-in grinders.

Great video. I was trying to decide between the Bambino Plus and the Gaggia Classic Pro, but now I’m leaning towards the Carezza from this video. In terms of the Gaggia family, would you recommend the Classic Pro or the Carezza for beginner home espresso? Thanks
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Darren, Thanks for the comment and question. The answer is: it depends. The Carezza is very easy to use, it's quick to be ready to go and foolproof for the most part. Compared to the Classic Pro it's an appliance grade product while the Pro is a true machine. For the beginner both products can use pre-ground coffee or ESE pods so you don't have to have a grinder to get started. But add a grinder and the Classic Pro can take your espresso to the next level. You can increase quality by grinding fresh for the Carezza but you will always be brewing through the pressurized filter basket. Due to machine grade build the Classic Pro can run for decades with proper maintenance and retains value. Personally I'd go with the Classic Pro if you think espresso will be a long term thing for you. Hope that helps! Marc

@@Wholelattelovepage thanks for prompt reply... a have triple shot Grande cappuccinos everyday from Starbucks. From a video I watched, the shots from a pressurized and non-pressurized look almost identical in terms of crema. Being that I am accustomed to Starbucks espresso drinks, would I noticed that much of a difference from a Carezza shot if I use a grinder at home on “fine grind” with same espresso beans from Starbucks? Aesthetically, I like the look of the Carezza machine better over the Classic Pro Thanks again

Hi Marc, nice to see a review of the machine i own. However, do you really think for best results no manual tamping gives best resulst? I also find the machine struggles with a very fine grind (even illy's). Perhaps im getting coffee grind volumes wrong, i don't weigh before brewing currently.

Hi RS, Thanks for comment and question. I did some testing with pre-ground from Danesi, Illy and Lavazza. The Danesi Gold I used seemed to have the finest grind followed by Illy Dark and Lavazza inBlu which were very similar. Tamping does have an effect (I'll probably do a video on that) but was beyond the scope of this video. I'll say with tamping and the commercial style basket I'd call this a "Hybrid" pressurized/non-pressurized espresso machine. Here's some data on un-tamped and tamped doses pulled with pre-ground coffee mentioned above (I dosed each coffee by filling the basket and leveling and weighing result. All extractions 2oz/60ml): Danesi Gold Dose weight: 18.1g, no tamp extraction time: 23 sec, tamped extraction time: 32 sec Illy Dark Dose weight: 16.3g, no tamp extraction time: 18 sec, tamped extraction time: 21 sec Lavazza inBlu Dose weight: 16g, no tamp extraction time: 17 sec, tamped extraction time: 20 sec

Hi Marc, great video. My machine arrived last week and I’m learning to use it. I’m new to espresso machines. Is the Caggia Carezza Deluxe semi-automatic, and what does that mean in terms of its function? Thanks.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi HV, Congras on your new machine and thank you for the comment and question. Yes, the Carezza is a semi-automatic machine. Go back 50 years or so and espresso was made manually. A barista pulled on a big lever (that's where "pulling a shot" came from) to create the pressure of the espresso brewing process. Those type of machines still exist. In semi-auto machines a pump creates the pressure. Then there are super-automatic machines which do everything from grinding the beans to extracting the espresso with a single button press. Hope that helps! Marc

Hi SC, Thanks for the question and comment. What make/model grinder are you using and what type of coffee? If espresso is weak and watery that's usually an indication you need to grind finer and/or increase the dose of coffee. Also could be the coffee. Thanks Marc. I’m using a cuisinart supreme grind automatic burr grinder, on the finest setting, I’ve gone through two different bags of really good quality whole beans, ground myself fresh, getting the same result from both. I’ve seen a tutorial for taking out the valve that’s responsible for turning it in to a pressurized basket - is this something worth trying? Or trying different things with/without tamping? Thanks!

Can these machines do a normal cup of coffee (circa 300ml) or are they purely for shots of espresso with milk? I currently have a kitchen aid one cup filter coffee machine but want a frothy top on my coffees.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 5 жыл бұрын
Hi m2n123, These machine can do a longer (larger cup) coffee. Technically called a Lungo. 300ml/10oz is pushing it a bit. Have you tried Americanos? Basically that's espresso with hot water added to taste. for 300ml/10oz cup you'd likely want to start with a double shot of espresso and add 240ml/8oz hot water. That will get you a crema layer on top. Another option, and one I use everyday for my "regular" coffee is a super-automatic bean to cup machine. Push a button and the machine does the rest. Super-automatics grind whole beans fresh and handle the entire brewing process. They do make a coffee with a crema (froth) on top. They are easier to use than something like a Keurig. There are no plastic K cups to trash. Coffee quality is much better because the beans are ground right before brewing and you can adjust flavor/strength by changing grind size and coffee dose. They cost more than a capsule machine upfront but long term whole bean coffee is much cheaper. Here's a basic super-automatic: www.wholelattelove.com/gaggia-brera-espresso-machine-in-black Marc

Hi Marc, Great introducing video and I learn a lot from your video before I buy this machine. I just bought this machine and try out today. And got some troubleshooting already. I don't know what's happening? First of all, let me start with my step after I got the machine. 1. I fill the drinking water to the water tank below the max line and put the tank back in place. 2. I plug in the cord to the wall socket. 3. I turn on the machine 4. The second, forth and bottom right light start to blink In the manual says these light blink is normal when first use. Then they said open the steam knob and the pump will be activated automatically and wait til a steady jet of water flows out of the steam wand. But at the point! nothing happen to my machine at all. quiet pump, no water flows out and all 3 lights keep blinking. Pls Kindly advise if this is the product defective or did I miss the set up process or something. Thank you very much.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 6 жыл бұрын
Hi LC, did you purchase the machine in US? If so please call our tech support at 888-411-5282 and they'd be happy to help troubleshoot. In the meantime you can try power cycling the machine - unplug from power and restart. Also check that the water tank is fully inserted. It may be a water priming issue. On rare occasions new machines will not prime the pump from water tank. This can be solved by force priming the machine. You will need a flexible tube which can fit snugly over the water intake receptacle behind the water tank. Connect the other end of tube to something like a turkey baster. Fill turkey baster and tube with water and squeeze to force water in.

Hi Marc, is continuous brewing possible using Carezza? I've been using several mokapots to brew my coffee, but lately I'm intended to buy a budget espresso machine. I googled several machines on sale and found that Gaggia Carezza and Classic seems good for me (Classic goes over budget though), but some say with Carezza I cannot brew three or four shots of espresso in a row, because of the pressure limit itself. Is there any way to brew several espresso in a row using this machine or Do I have to buy Classic? Thanks a lot for your great review.

Hi YP, Sorry for the delayed response. You can brew several in a row. Not sure how you got impression you could not. By the time you reload PF after making a shot it'll be ready to go for the next one. Perhaps it was about cooling down the boiler after steaming milk that gave you that impression?

Hi Marc. I'm thinking of buying the Gaggia MDF. My question is about dialing shots with the pressurised portafilter of the Carezza deluxe. Do I still need to look for 25-30 seconds? And one more. Any suggestions on an alternative of the MDF(price-wise)? Is the Lelit PL043MMI a good choise?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 5 жыл бұрын
Hi LZ, With the pressurized basket design in the Carezza you can affect extraction timing to some extent with grind size and tamping. Not the same as with a non pressurized basket but it works to some extent. MDF is a very good grinder for the price - honestly, I'm not a fan of dosing grinders and we no longer carry the MDF. The Lelit you mentioned is an older model with okay reviews (I've never used one). As an alternative in the same price level you'd be looking at appliance grade grinders like the Breville Smart Grinder Pro: www.wholelattelove.com/breville-bcg820bss-smart-grinder-pro Marc

Hi, I’m a complete newbie to coffee making, so this video is really helpful and I think that this would be a great beginner machine for me to start with. I just have a few questions if you could help answer them please! Does it come with a milk jug or do you need to buy one separately? Do you know what the difference is between this carezza deluxe and the carezza style? Also I’ve seen lots of comments regarding not being able to change the pressurised portafilter to a non-pressurised one. Would it be better to have a machine that can do both, or is that too complicated for a beginner? And lastly, how long will this machine last if maintained and looked after? Sorry if that’s a lot! It’s a big investment so I want to make the right decision haha
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi LH, Thanks for the questions! I'll do my best to help... The machine does not come with a frothing pitcher. Difference between the Deluxe and Style is the brew pressure gauge on the Deluxe model. The Carezza does use a pressurized filter basket. But it's better than most in that the pressure restriction comes after a fairly standard type of filter basket so grind size can affect an extraction. I think this is a good setup for a beginner. Allows you to get into espresso using pre-ground so you do not need a quality burr grinder to get relatively good results. If you think you'll go deeper into espresso my favorite machine for a beginner is the Gaggia Classic Pro. It comes with both pressurized and non-pressurized filter baskets and uses standard size/weight portafilter. It's a true machine that can go for decades if taken care of. But it does cost more. Long-term that investment is worth it IMO: www.wholelattelove.com/products/gaggia-classic-pro The Carezza will go a long time with proper care. But is more of an appliance grade product. Hope mthat helps! Marc

Hi John, Thanks for the comment and question. Like the majority of entry-level pressurized basket only espresso appliances the Carezza's filter holder is made of aluminum. It comes with both pressurized and non-pressurized filter baskets, standard size/weight 58mm chrome plated brass portafilter and it's machine grade build quality: www.wholelattelove.com/products/gaggia-classic-pro It's more $$ up front but take care of it and it'll be making espresso 20 years down the road. Hi Wency, After steaming milk you need to cool down the boiler. To do it, turn the knob to expel steam and quickly push in the water button (it's the 3rd button from the left). Hi, I consider buying this coffee machine but my only doubt is the portafilter and its durability. Until now I had a Krups machine that lasted over 10 years but during that time the portafilter broke twice. Although machine was already after the warranty, I could still buy a new portafilter for this model or a replacement one from another Krups model. Does the Gaggio Carezza Deluxe match the portafilter from any other espresso machine eg. other Gaggia model? Or maybe I can buy a replacement dedicated to this coffee machine somewhere on the Internet. Thanks in advance for your reply!

Hi KJ, Thanks or the question. This product is in the appliance grade. IMO it's higher quality than the Krups. But, if you want a machine grade product I'd go straight to the Gaggia Classic. It has a pressurized basket in addition to the standard non-pressurized baskets so you'll have the same capabilities out of the box with the ability to make espresso from pre-ground coffee. If/when you get a decent burr grinder you'll be able to make a far better espresso from whole beans ground fresh. The Classic uses a commercial standard 58mm portafilter. It's a little more $$ upfront than the Carezza but will give decades of service and if your the DIY type parts are cheap, readily available and it's a very user serviceable machine should it need a rebuild a decade down the road. If you stick with the Carezza replacement portafilters are available but they do not match other Gaggia machines. Do give the Classic a look: www.wholelattelove.com/products/gaggia-classic-pro Marc

Hi Joel, Unlike many machines using a pressurized filter basket grind size and tamping can make a big difference with the Carezza. What brand/type of coffee are you using? Are you grinding fresh or using pre-ground? Some tips: If you have not already done so try an Italian style bean blend Like Maromas Orphea or Lavazza Super Crema and grind fresh right before brewing. Load your double filter basket to capacity and tamp firmly. I put a video a couple days ago: How To: Beginner's Guide to Easy Success with Semi-Automatic Espresso Machines kzbin.info/www/bejne/emfPfYydrZaCrZY It's intended for brewing with standard non-pressurized baskets but has some tips on consistency that will help. If you watch the video know that timing does not fully apply to extractions done with pressurized baskets - but the Carezza has a rather unique filter basket/portafilter setup which reacts to grind and tamp more than other pressurized filter basket machines. Hope that helps! Marc

Hi Jesus, Thanks for the question. Semi-automatic espresso can be a little tricky as you're learning. Were you using the pressurized (Breville calls them dual wall) filter baskets? They are more forgiving than non-pressurized baskets which Breville calls single wall. Are you grinding beans fresh or using pre-ground. Answer those questions and I can help you out. The Carezza is pressurized filter basket only and a very good machine if you are using pre-ground. Gets excellent results with fresh ground as well. Marc

My descale light is on, is there a difference between a blinking red light or a steady red light? Manual doesn't say much. Also I use only distilled water, do I need to descale it anyways?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi am, Thanks for the question. I do not think there is a difference between blinking and steady. Two things... First, even though you likely have no scale with use of distilled water the only way to get the light off is to go through the descaling procedure as described in the manual. So if you want the light off do that but do not add a descaling product to the reservoir. Second, continuous use of pure distilled water is not recommended in espresso machines. There are 2 reasons for that. With no minerals in the water you will tend to make an over-extracted espresso. Over-extraction typically causes bitter flavors. Another potential problem is internal corrosion of metals components. Water is a good solvent. Mineral free distilled water is an even better solvent. So good it can pull ions from metal components causing corrosion. This may or may not cause problems with prolonged use. I recommend re-mineralizing distilled water prior to use. There are commercial products available for that purpose or you can remin using simple ingredients like baking soda and Epsom salt. Doing so will result in better coffee flavor and avoiding corrosion. If interested here's a video showing how to create your own re-mineralization concentrates which create a Specialty Coffee Association spec brew water: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3msaJ15ZdiEkNE

For just $70 bucks more than the Carezza, it's a great value. The main features (to me) that are considered an upgrade are: a "standard" size 58mm portafilter (compared to the Carezza's 53mm), a 3-way solenoid valve (not really necessary, but definitely makes for easier cleanup of the used coffee), and full stainless steel construction (compared to the Carezza's stainless-clad plastic).

I just got this after my delonghi espresso machine broke. As excited as I was with this machine, the coffee looks good coming out, but it just tastes weak and not very nice. I tried some in the shop, I tried some at home and felt sick after both. You just don't get the kick and I think it's the pressure portafilter... Tamped coffee the water is pushed through with heat and pressure and the fine coffee means it disperses through it getting a strong flavour. This one just wets the coffee and then pushes it through loose coffee and the extraction when enough pressure is reached. I really like coffee in different forms and brewing types. So far I've been disappointed. I use the double filter to try get that strong robust taste. So far let down.

Hi CJ, Are you using pre-ground coffee? If so, is it ground to an espresso fine size - something maybe a hair coarser than table salt but no coarser than granulated sugar? Grind size is critical for making a robust espresso.

No automatic shutdown for shots. Commercial machines dispense the exact amount so don’t walk away from the coffee pouring out expecting it to automatically cutoff the coffee drip.

Hi Johnny, Right - it's not a commercial machine. Also mention not all commercial machines have automatic volumetric dosing.

I have had this machine a while now and I find that by the time the milk is frothed, the crema on the espresso has almost disappeared. Am I doing something wrong?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi David, Not unusual for crema to dissipate a bit as shot stands and it's more pronounced in a pressurized filter basket extractions. So you are not doing anything wrong. With that in mind some coffees produce more crema than others and you would most likely get more and longer lasting crema if grinding whole beans fresh with the grind size dialed in properly. One thing you might try is frothing milk first and then pulling your shot. With that prep order you milk froth will separate a bit while standing but you can help by swirling the pitcher prior to pouring for a more uniform texture in the pitcher. Marc

@@Wholelattelovepage I've tried that but the machine overheats. What grind size do you recommend? Sinc I saw this yesterday I have realised I wasn't filling the basket enough and that has already made a difference - thank you

Can I use a bottomless portafilter with this machine
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Carlos, Thanks for the question. You likely could but Gaggia does not make one specifically for the Carezza. Might want to consider a Gaggia Classic Pro which does have a bottomless PF available for purchase. www.wholelattelove.com/products/gaggia-classic-pro www.wholelattelove.com/collections/portafilters-and-filter-baskets/products/gaggia-bottomless-portafilter Marc

Sorry I am five years late but can anyone help me here? How many bars does these machine produce and can I switch out the portafilter with a bottomless one and get espresso still?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage Жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, Thanks for the question and it's never too late! The Carezza is designed to work with the pressurized filter basket and therefore runs at a higher than 9 bar pressure. During an extraction pressure within the PF is likely in the 10-12 bar range. There is no Gaggia branded bottomless for the machine. There may be 3rd party solutions available but none I can recommend. If you want to use bottomless I suggest having a look at the Gaggia Classic Pro. It uses a commercial size and weight 58mm portafilter and a bottomless PF is readily available. The Classic Pro comes out of the box with both pressurized and non-pressurized filter basket so you can start without an espresso grinder if needed and use pre-ground with the pressurized basket and add the grinder down the road. Check it out here: www.wholelattelove.com/products/gaggia-classic-pro The Classic Pro is a true machine grade product while the Carezza is appliance grade. Hope that helps! Marc

Hi, which machine would you recommend between the new Gaggia Classic & Carrezza Deluxe for home use and why. I need to upgrade from the Icona & have a grinder - Baratza Sette 270.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 6 жыл бұрын
If you have a grinder definitely go with the Gaggia Classic. The Carezza is pressurized portafilter brewing only. The Classic (in the US) comes with both pressurized baskets for use with ESE pods or pre-ground and non pressurized basket for brewing from fresh ground coffee. Brewing with fresh ground coffee and the non-pressurized baskets produces better espresso!

Ok thanks, but is the NEW classic still a good buy with the solenoid switch & rocker switches gone, lower powered motor, plastic spouts etc. There is a lot of criticism around the new model with all the changes which has significantly deteriorated the build quality. Hence I had asked the question. Look forward to your response. thanks

@Wholelattelovepage 6 жыл бұрын
Hi SK, So here in the US and the rest of North America the Gaggia Classic has not changed. Still has the 3 way solenoid, rockers and comes with pressurized and non-pressurized basket. Guessing you are in EU? Get a buddy here to buy and send you a new one. Or, find a used classic Classic there and rebuild. Gaggia Classics are without question the best value in home espresso and a very rebuildable MACHINE!

thx! do you recommend this machine for easy use? I want better Quality than nespresso but want something more user friendly than the lower end lelit machines. I have a hard time finding out the right grade of grounding the right tampering. is this machine easier to use than a gaggia classic?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 5 жыл бұрын
You are welcome. It's a pressurized portafilter system so grind size is not super critical - It should be espresso fine but it's forgiving due to the pressurized system. Coffee purchased pre-ground for espresso works but with the pressurized brewing system and not grinding fresh you do give up a bit of potential quality for ease of use. Tamping does have an affect but it's not huge. This machine is easier than using a Classic with a standard non-pressurized basket. Also ready to brew - up to temp much faster. Marc

Sometimes it seems like you guys are getting paid by Gaggia far more than any other companies. You NEVER would compliment a pressurized basket machine as much as a gaggia. You constantly compliment the Classic and defend its crappy panarello, it’s just weird. It’s like you’re sponsored by them but no other companies you offer machines of.
