I’ve been looking for the best Android tablet for drawing for a long time now. It’s been a rougher road than I expected. In this review of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 I think I have found it. I reviewed the Galaxy tab A last fall and it felt a little to striped down, this tablet has much better specs and the screen is gorgeous. Not to mention drawing with the included s-pen is great.

John Matthias That issue comes up now and again on their forum and other places; their answer is consistent that they are a small team focused on developing and performance tuning the iOS version, they don't have the resources or time to develop for Android, which has the additional overhead of fragmentation across a myriad of devices with various variants of Android. Only a few of those have pen support, which is not native to Android. You can't get the responsiveness on Android you can on iPads because of the inherent input lag of Android. My brother is a musician and tablet programmer, and has similar issues with music software on Android and iOS. The input lag on Android is simply too great. I've seen nothing to justify the accusation by some that the guys behind Procreate are in collusion or paid off, that is just slander by Android users.

yes, since android market is just 2/3 of the bunch and it wouldn't be commercially logic to make app in android versions, lol.. People, this apps selling ipads, so they pay them not to developed other stuff. trust me.

Procreate has a custom engine built and optimised for Apple SOCs. It would be too much work to Port it to Android while keeping performance.

Same here. I was originally thinking that I can use the s pen on a Galaxy Tab S2 but after doing a bit of research, I found that the s pen works on "An electromagnetic field is generated from a circuit behind the screen" which the Tab S2's screen doesn't have I believe. Well, there goes that idea out the window. 😒😒

I like your tablet reviews, there's so many! I feel like a lot of artists are really concerned with screen size (like deciding between the two iPad Pro sizes) I wonder what your thoughts on what the perfect size is.

great review! I've been wondering if you got to review hybrids? For instance the latest yoga book seems pretty cool to draw in, the price is similar, the design is different, since you draw in the keyboard (it'll make sense, I swear) and has an attached screen, although you can draw in the screen, but the pressure levels are better in the keyboard. I haven't seen any artist's review yet though... I hope my wording is ok... It sounds confuse, I know...

Yeah, I agree. Brads presentation is funny, and engaging. I just purchased a new Tab S3 from NewEgg for $465 CAD - about $345 USD. That's darn near half price, so I'm pleased with the price. I hope I'm pleased with the tablet. >Charlie

what is worth mentioning is the fact, that the s pens from older models, like Galaxy Note 10.1, are also working with S3 and vice versa. Moreover, older s pens also recognize tilt on Tab S3 and it's way more noticable when you use pencil in Samsung Notes, instead of pen brush. Overall, I think I'll stay with my Note for a little longer, but I will definitely purchase the new S pen just for the tip itself, cause it works wonderfully, can't wait for Staedler to release their s pen.

I love my 9.7 but as you have mentioned in the past, the screen resolution is lacking compared to an ipad. So I am really REALLY thinking of upgrading to the latest version, which clearly addresses that issue. My bamboo pen and 9.7 have allowed me to take my favorite style--namely pen and ink line work--to a tablet with virtually the same feel. And by the way--thanks for your vids!

Hello Brad! Thanks for another fantastic review. I'm really curious to know if I can use the galaxy tab s3 to create hi-rez artwork via the Sketchbook app..? I currently use the old galaxy note 12.2 and the even older galaxy note 10.1. And while I enjoy drawing on them, they don't allow me to work at 300 dpi. I would like to find an Android tablet that will allow me to draw my comic pages in at least 300 dpi, and I'm wondering if the galaxy tab s3 would work well for that purpose. Also, if you have any other suggestions/devices that would work, please let me know. Thanks!

This is a very good and honest review. The aspect of the S-Pen and the general tablet from an artist's point of view is pretty much spot-on. One thing you miss, did writing on the edges of the screen improved? The S-Pen is a Wacom EMR tech and writing on the edges is usually wonky... I wonder if that improved.

I would love to see an artist review on those 2 in 1 laptops such as the HP Spectre x360 or the Lenovo ThinkPad P40 yoga...They are quite powerful, and way much cheaper than the Surface book or Wacom Mobile Studio... I wonder what an artist would think about the drawing experience on those devices...
@faeinthebay
@faeinthebay 7 жыл бұрын
iyadart I own a Spectre x360 and the stylus support was terrible. Lines broke easily and pressure detection was way off. The same stylus worked fine on other tablets like an Asus tablet, it's just how HP implemented the digitizers. HP dropped Synaptics stylus support from newer models for a reason.

The MIIX 510 is pretty interesting device but I am looking for a mobile alternative to my workstation, thus 16GB is the least I can survive with handling heavy 2D&3D tasks. Unlike the Surface or the Wacom Mobile Studio Pro, The MIIX line doesn't offer 16GB RAM option yet. Otherwise, it is a clear winner!

Just like ehsan said, if you haven't already you may want to like at artflow again. I did an update and was a little astonished. Thought to myself, huh, they basically just cloned procreate for Android. It might not have all the current functions of procreate but it seems like they're definitely trying to capitalize on their market for Android.

I have to agree. Artflow is really nice, as is Infinite Design and Infinite Painter. As far as this particular tablet goes, I'm not sold on it just yet. It's $730 with the keyboard for an android device. The Tab A 10.1 seems like a better deal at this moment, especially since you can get those between @$200-300.

the resolution "QXGA" means 1536 x 2048 px and not the subpixel structure... And actually the Tab S3 uses a normal RGB matrix. Smartphones and the last Tab S2 8.0 uses PenTile but the Tab S2 9.7 and Tab S3 does not.

Unfortunately I can't find my Galaxy Note 10.1 charger since my wife cleaned up, but it makes me want to try my art apps out again. Not that I expect much on this old thing. I originally had an iPad 4, and it got me interested in a tablet for drawing, since my Wacom has me tied to a desk looking up at a screen while drawing & painting on an empty grey slate. The iPad wasn't ideal without a stylus, but found Procreate and other great art apps. I got the Galaxy Note 10.1 as a present, and tried out all the apps mentioned here's well as others like ArtFlow, bought the full apps, but was left disappointed, not just because the dinky stylus that it comes with is not ideal for drawing, since I'd happily buy a good 3rd party Wacom stylus if the tablet worked out. The Android apps just seemed immature by comparison, but most importantly, I didn't like the brushes systems or the lag. As an overall tablet, it paled in comparison to the iPad for a number of reasons. I liked the Google store though, the Apple App Store still leaves a bit to be desired. ArtFlow was one of the most promising apps, as was Corel when it came out, which from memory was a direct steal from ArtFlow, including the quirks. I gave up on using a tablet for art, but occasionally used Procreate on the iPad for figure drawing classes. Then came the iPad Pro, and it all changed. I can draw and paint all day on this thing. I'd love to be able to compare what Android, read Samsung, tablets have to offer these days, but I don't have the funds to burn. From what I've seen in the Samsung store previously, stylus support is simply a Samsung layer which doesn't have good system-level support across all apps; writing and art apps have to be made for it. Their lack of updates for their old tablets, even after severe security patches released by Google, leaves me cold on Samsung though. My Galaxy tablet is still susceptible to exploits like Stagefright. A Google search showed Samsung only every gave my tablet one minor update before abandoning it.

I'd been watching all these android videos and just recently bought a note 10.1" 2014 edition on ebay for under $200 USD (not an uncommon price there for good condition used. ) Its a great option for people on a budget. its got its quirks with various programs maybe because its an older android firmware but I'd pick it over an off-brand drawing monitor any day (specifically UGEE.) I wish it had the features Brad mentioned about Ipad though, those sound really fantastic...The things I'd give to cintiqify my tablet

I still have the super old Galaxy Note 8 and I find the size of the pen to be perfectly fine :) I guess that's due to my small hands, but I don't get tired after holding it for many hours (sometimes more than 6). I use 2 apps almost exclusively: Infinite Painter and Medibang Paint. I've been able to create some pretty great pieces, I don't think the software is holding me back personally. I've never had an iPad but just from my experience with demo devices in stores, I can tell that iOS has drawing apps of a MUCH greater quality. If only iPads weren't so damn expensive.

I love Artflow, has lots of features like layer and brush blending option, Lasso select move resize, varies brushes with options (flow, min max size, spacing, etc). Also yea I still doodle on my Galaxy Note 3 phone, no lag. Recently got the Galaxy Tab S3 and love it! I don't care about doing the Tilt shading thing for just doodling on the go and inking that's not really necessary. If I want to do that kind of stuff I will work in photoshop with my Wacom. I don't know why he was getting so much lag on the tab S3 I didn't get that kind of lag unless using a humongous brush at super high resolution. For normal inking and sketching I didn't notice lag at all.

You have to put an ugly matte plastic screen cover on iPad Pro to make using the stylus comfortable? That's a deal-breaker. Galaxy Tab S3 doesn't need that, so you can appreciate it's gorgeous AMOLED screen.

I have the Note 10.1 (2014, 32g) seeing the specifics the have better processor but the screen resolution is a little less, According to the specifications in some pages. I do not remember if the note 2014 will have Amole but the question would suit the tablet change right now? Or do I wait for a stronger change to another model? Considering that I try to do artwork.... i love the ipencil but i don't like iOS.

Nicely done sir!!! I don't suppose the Wacom link adapter would let you connect the tab s3 to a laptop would it ? laptop mini display port to USB-c Wacom link, usb-c Wacom link to usb-c tab s3.. something like that ?

constantinos schinas I tried it out, it's not bad but it doesn't actually let me see my computer screen on my tablet. I only see a black background. is the paid version different ?

This is the shit that's annoying about Crapple people. As soon as Apple do it, everyone forgets that Android has been doing it for years. The note pro 12.2 cane out in 2014, which is way better than the Liepad. But then Crapple comes out with the Apple pen with their liepad and everyone gets amnesia and forgets that Android did it years ago

It's even worse than that. The first android tablet with a stylus with palm rejection and pression sensor was the Note 10.1 from 2012! It's been about 5 years ago that you could draw on a screen, without having to be bankrupty because of a Wacom Cintiq LOL
