@@MeanMrMayo I see no reason why Sean couldn't go even further. If you can remix you can re-edit. For example, the song, "John Sinclair." It's a great little diddy actually, but the hook says "Gotta, gotta, gotta ..." 14 times! That makes an otherwise great song unlistenable. Just go in and snip it down to say, 4 gotta's and boom, brand new song.

" The Beatles will exist without us, " George said. As a 70 year old musician, I grew up with their music through my teens. The same as many others, I saw them on Sullivan's show in '64 and was captivated. I followed their careers, both as a group and then separately. As a songwriter and performer, I always felt John led with his heart on his chin. He was brave and frightened, flawed and cynical, but most of all, honest. He had the courage to put it on the line, for the record and damn the torpedoes. It still hurts inside that he was taken so soon. Love his voice.

Great Video Joe! Very nice introduction with your thoughts on John. I do like this collection very much. I don’t have every John Lennon compilation although I do have the Shaved Fish set and the 1990 box set. I have the remixes from 2000 - 2005 but this new set has completely different mixes which is a good thing. I like having a choice whether it’s the original mixes, the Peter Cobbin mixes from the early 2000s and these newer ones. John’s voice is definitely more up front and more present and I think it impacted me in terms of having a feeling of him being more present and truly missing him. Take care

12:05 - I just played that version of Steel and Glass before I switched your video on, and it's true - the brass has been left out, which is a bit off-putting. I've always interpreted those brass riffs as John laughing at Allen Klein. Steel and Glass is also one of my favorite tracks off my favorite Lennon album. My set arrived yesterday and I agree with your assessment. John's voice just leaps out of the speakers and it is so expressive and emotionally moving. I never understood why he never liked the sound of his own voice when it was such an expressive instrument. I spent a little time with the surround mix yesterday afternoon and it was immersive. Hearing the chorus kick in on the surrounds on Instant Karma was really exciting and the sound just fills the room.

One of your best videos, if not the best. I love the way you don’t rush it and take your time until you have really collected your thoughts. That’s why we love you. Angel Baby my favourite of the new discoveries on this compilation. Totally agree on Dear Yoko. It’s a Buddy Holly one and if John had stuck to straight backing it would have been better but the gimmicky guitar effects sadly age it. New York City would have been a better choice. Very interesting to go with Angela over the obvious but controversial lead single of Some Time in NYC (you know the one) but Angela while lovely on first listening would not stand up to repeated playing. This is a fabulous listening experience. Packaging for me is so-so. Cover is okay - they could have done better. I hate the arrows going in John’s ears and the lazy repetition of about 4 images in different forms over gatefold, labels etc. Title: terrible. As you pointed out it has been used to death. But as a listening experience it is the best version of John’s songs and therefore essential for any fan.

Excellent review - I think this is a great release - obviously the track listing isn't going to be perfect - a few of my favorites are missing Mother, NYC, Bring On The Lucie, Meat City. The live version of "Come Together" is the same one on the 1998 Anthology box which has 3 alternate performances from the one to one concert. It's exciting to think we may be getting sets like this for all of John's albums - looking forward to Plastic Ono Band, Mind Games and Double Fantasy the most but will of course buy and enjoy them all. Love your channel and look forward to more Solo Beatles album reviews in the future

Agreed on Slippin and Slidin. Angel Baby sounds leagues better than ever before, but I've never liked it that much and would have been happy to sub in another R&R cut. Woman Is... is a tough case. It would have been a gutsy statement even in '72, but it really goes to show how times have changed. In an interview at the time, Lennon said it was all white journalists and press that had issues with it; there was positive response from independent black media at the time. Truthfully, I think the word should almost never be used, particularly by white people (like 99.999% of the time it is neither useful nor necessary and is in fact hurtful), but censoring or censuring people isn't going to convince people of why they shouldn't use it. That being said, John's song is a historic and powerful statement...based on a statement from Yoko, if John is to be believed... so I sympathize with both the anti-bigotry and free speech concerns in this case.

@djreid4 жыл бұрын
Well said, Joe !! I am no expert, but from the start I just had a feeling this was going to be something Special. I didn't hear the "rave reviews" from Flaming Pie as much as I have heard from this spectacular album. This is truly an album to "celebrate" ! 1. Celebrate - for a MUCH better sound. 2. Celebrate - for music with a message that is as current and up to date as your News on Fox !! 3. Celebrate - Six years of fame with the Beatles doesn't compare with the six years of Solo Recordings that definitely are equal to or surpass the Beatles material to some extent ! I think the first album is as stark and beautiful as it gets and Imagine and Mind Games and Walls and Bridges seem to take Lennon's career to new heights with these "highlights" that bring a stoney heart to tears ! The "emotions" of Beatles fans now "embracing" John Lennon in a different category of an artist, I have heard the word "genius", "brother", "friend", "legend" ..the names of Lennon and his "songs' now revered at the top. Each album the Beatles performed and produced has the name John Lennon at the top. If you name the top 3 songs of each Beatles album, at least 2 of the 3 are John Lennon written either in lyric or music or both ! The Live Lennon such a stellar moment on this incredible album ! Who now can say, just a money grab. No way ! If there is anything ethical here, it is in the name of Lennon, the songs now speak volumes, open the eyes of the blind and open the ears of the deaf. The songs by the "person" John Lennon, the fans see someone they have never seen before, or ever will see again. The Legend !!!
@StephenTraskSKSZP4 жыл бұрын
Yes! My first thought was "they should have chosen "New York City" to represent that album. Disagree about "Dear Yoko" because this mix reveals that to be the the best performed track of John's on "Double Fantasy" John's does a much better Buddy Holly than he does Elvis and the whole thing sounds like the post New Wave radio pop that would dominate the airwaves later in the 80s so it feels here a bit ahead of it's time.

I have very little gripes with this set. I got the 2 cd/blu ray deluxe version at looney tunes this weekend. My only gripe is that I would replace Angela and Dear Yoko with Woman is the N* of the World and New York City. Looking forward to plastic ono band in December!
@MeanMrMayo4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think WOMAN IS..should have been represented here, as it seems Yoko and Sean were partly looking to make statements with this package. But they possibly didn't want to face negative attention for using the N Word, even though of course other Lennon releases do have it.

I shouldn't have ben so quick to judge. You were right about "New York City". That was the best track on "Some Time" and I also wished she put that in there. While on the subject, I really loved that live version of Come Together.

The cds I find the album very smooth sounding. But Cold Turkey is very loud and too bassy like Instant Karma. Nobody Told Me has lost the punch when the guitars kick in. Overall not a bad collection. But there was nothing wrong with the Working Class Hero collection. But I prefer the 2010 remasters which are the closet to the albums, where the remixes from 20 years ago are not bad either The vinyl sounds better to my ears and easier on the ear.
@Ian_Jules4 жыл бұрын
To me, Nobody Told Me sounds liberated from the echo put on the original mix, giving it a lot more grit and attitude. The guitar licks on Cold Turkey sound incredible to me. The track only has guitar, bass, drums, and a subtle organ part in the first place. It has always been fairly "bassy", and to me it needs to be, like most of John's early singles and the POB cuts that are so sparse the bass is really filling in the sound. It helps that Klaus Voorman's bass is melodic without being busy or showy. Generally, I don't like too much bass but in this case, tracks like Instant Karma sound well-balanced to my ears. How much bass is the right amount really depends on the cut.

@@Ian_Jules. Everybody has their opinion. But there is a difference with the cd and vinyl of this collection. Vinyl is easier on the ear. Nobody told me as I said has lost its kick when the guitars start. They have made it mellow. Cold Turkey is to loud etc especially on headphones. But that’s why we have all these different versions to pick from. I have the 70’s records, the Lennon box set from 1990, the remixes from 20 years ago, the Signature box set from 2010 and the vinyl set 2015 and now this set. The Imagine box set from 2018 is excellent and looking forward to the POB box set. Power to the people.

@@trevorbrown2813 You prompted me to go back to Nobody Told Me, since you were kinda adamant on that point. I think what you're hearing as mellow my ears are interpreting as warmer and more natural. To me, it actually sounds more in line with the Anthology outtake of Nobody Told Me. Again, I'm hearing a lot of echo stripped back, and I suspect what we're hearing is closer to what one might have heard in the studio during recording. Note I am listening on CD, not vinyl.

Hey Joe, I've pointed this out before, but I would like to do it one more time. The last time a vinyl comp on John was released was in 1981. So if you are into wax, there is no way you can say this is a superfluous collection. I just wish that I could afford it. Take care...

Hey, Mr. Mayo... so glad you mentioned the horns on Steel and Glass. The remixes are wonderful in general, but in this case, the horns on the horns original Steel and Glass played against the string section in a way I find really cool and interesting. I understand that maybe the decision was made to emphasize the vocal and de-clutter the sound, but to lose the horns entirely is a shame. Also, the recording of Come Together was included on the Anthology box set New York disc, although funnily it wasn't until the new mix that I really noticed the "hairy..." ad lib.
@MeanMrMayo4 жыл бұрын
Yes, my only gripes about this set are the brass effects missing from STEEL AND GLASS, and the omission of the song NEW YORK CITY.

@@MeanMrMayo I would not have minded hearing more cuts from Sometime in NYC. Angela sounded fantastic and I'm excited for the full album in its newly remixed form. For some of the other albums, as amazing as many of these new mixes are, I'm sure I will still be returning to the original/John mixes at times. As imperfect as they are, they have a lot of character, and people who've spent a lot of time with John's solo work may be attuned to this. In the deluxe edition, a note in the big book says the remixes were designed to be faithful to the originals, and most of them are. But they also had a goal of bringing John's voice to the forefront, which the original mixes are not known for, so some of the more noticeable changes may come from those two goals conflicting a bit.

Congrats on hearing from Sean. I enjoyed the new set. I would have definitely taken off How Do You Sleep and replaced it with New York City. We just had the Imagine box, despite this being a new mix, and it’s such a vicious over the top song, Too Many People aside, that I just think having John singing about the city he loved would have been a better fit. And it’s a great song to boot and would give Sometime In NYC more representation. And maybe we didn’t need all seven of John’s Double Fantasy songs. I understand there’s no other way to represent John from that album on a solo John compilation other than including those songs but it seems to go against the original intent of that album. Maybe take out Cleanup Time, I’m Losing You, Dear Yoko and replace those with more deep cuts from the mid period albums or Move Over Ms. L.
@Ian_Jules4 жыл бұрын
@@michaelf9693 'Cleanup Time' is not present on any edition of this release that I know of... I don't think it's ever been on a one or two-disc compilation and often gets overlooked when people talk about Double Fantasy...instead, we have a mix of 'Every Man has a Woman Who Loves Him' with John on lead vocal, a Yoko song which was arranged as a duet on the original album. These are all nitpicks and don't take away from my enjoyment, but Milk & Honey feels underrepresented next to Double Fantasy. I would have rather had 'Borrowed Time' and 'I Don't Wanna Face It' than 'Stepping Out' and 'Dear Yoko'. They stuck to putting all the M&H songs after the DF songs, where it would have been chronologically "okay" to intersperse them, since they were recorded at the same time and might have been more interesting to sequence them as such. I am a little surprised they included half of Imagine. It's a strong album, but I could have traded 'How Do You Sleep?' for another Mind Games cut, particularly 'Bring on the Lucie' or 'You are Here'.
@PaulinaAngel4 жыл бұрын
I would've replaced Dear Yoko for another M&H song, Borrowed Time. But I'm so happy that John's take on Every Man Has A Woman Who Loves Him finally gets another rare chance in a compilation since the 1990 LENNON box set.
@jeffreyroedel98044 жыл бұрын
I'd have included "New York City" (because it's a fun rocker, and I think that cluttered original mix could really use this Ultimate remix treatment) and cut "Dear Yoko" which isn't that great of a song, and DF is already well represented on this set....The rest of the tracks I find are solid choices, some unexpected but they all sound great to me.
