Nice review, I have the ews livery and find it a joy to run around very smooth and nice to feel the die cast underneath as you pick it up 👍

Thanks Ciaran. Yeah, it's unusual these days to have a metal underbody like that. It gives a very solid feel. I'm just sorry Hornby haven't re-used the motor and drive assembly in other locos in their range to bring them up to scratch.

I always thought these were plain Janes and still do, but they do have some charm about them, short and low chassis and the correct livery really makes them on the wants list..

Their still great runners and as say they have a kind of quirky charm to them. I've always had at least one of these on the layout for the last 10 years.

Enjoyed your assessment of the model. I have the original 013 at a cost of £133, including non sound decoder and the revised 013 'next generation' livery from Rainbow Railways, again non sound decoder. I now have six Class 67s without sound and that is a bind.

Great review as ever. I’ve had an EWS in Royal Train livery for about 5-6 years and it’s an excellent runner. I fitted TTS decoder and upgraded the speaker from Richard at Roads & Rails. Many thanks for the heads-up re the £99 DB Schenker. Too good to miss at that price so I’ve ordered one from Kernow. Have struggled to find anyone selling the Hornby TTS decoder so will probably opt to try an ESU with Class 67 sound file & double iPhone speakers. I’m going to fit a driver too as think it really enhances the look of the loco. Thanks again for your great reviews which have helped me make decisions on buying locos & stock. Best regards from Scotland 🏴

Great review, I agree, my 67 came with the Belmond Pullman Pack with the stunning Pullman livery and comes with three Belmond lit Pullmans for about GBP190 new. However, have Hornby changed the loco since as my TTS sound decoder was not plug and play, so to put the speaker in the area supplied under the chassis in the tank the speaker wires had to be cut/un-soldered (at the speaker end) threaded through the body and re-soldered to the speaker, with no instructions on how to do so from Hornby. I found the procedure on KZbin, I used the TTS supplied speaker which I found was very good with a good bass range. ...Drew

Hi Drew, I do like the Belmond version of this loco which I reviewed a while back. It's probably one of my favourite Class 67 liveries . £190 for the set was an absolute bargain - Well done. Yeah, the TTS addition to this model is hardly plug & play and needs you to unsolder and thread the wiring through the underbody which you've had to go through. The supplied speaker isn't bad but I've found the overall frequency response of the iPhone speakers to be very good and they fit handy enough in the base. A Megabass speaker isn't an option here and a Sugar cube is too tinny in my opinion. Enjoy the set. It's a nice one.

@@EuviRail Thanks for the speaker tip, great Belmond review I just watched it. I was in the right place at the right time for the bargain, it was the last one in stock at the local hobby store and they had got it wholesale in 2019 at a good price when the Aussie Dollar was very high against the Pound, lucky me they didn't hike the price when the rate went down. Now they have restocked at GBP265 ..Drew

I have to agree with you re Hornby's packaging. I ordered a class 67 from Kernow, it arrived with a windscreen Inside the cab, and lights not working at the same end., I presume it had been dropped in transit. Sent it back, and Kernow quickly sent a replacement, with a completed checklist to confirm no issues before sending, unfortunately it arrived with EXACTLY the same faults.

I suspect the damage was done to these models on the boat from China. Comes back to the same issue though. Thanks for sharing.

107 mph top speed ! That's near to the mark as the 67s are limited to 110 mph and have been for a long time so it's actually more realistic for it's type? This is a good model showing how good Lima were with their UK releases! The central flywheel motor with virtually no maintenance was great! Hornby have got the railroad version out with one powered bogie which at the price point is s*** ! I always hoped for a chiltern line release but it never came! I know there was the Wrexham and Shropshire but it would have been a simple mod for Hornby to just leave off the branding and we would have been there?
@EuviRail Жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting Mike. I have always seen this model as a good mid tier model that should RRP in the 130 region so you could see them selling for as low as 110 say. Producing a Railroad version wouldn't really make sense then - but Hornby have other ideas. As you say, a Chiltern option was low hanging fruit. Chiltern MK3s wouldn't go astray either.
@Richard47484 Жыл бұрын
Interesting comment about the loco not reaching the 125mph maximum speed of the prototypes. From what I understand only one Class 67 has ever reached this speed during the initial acceptance process and 110mph is the maximum you can expect on the main line in normal circumstances - they reach this speed between Crewe and Wilmslow on Transport for Wales train in the event of late running. So the maximum speed for the model is pretty accurate for what happens in reality.
@EuviRail Жыл бұрын
I do like to see locos meet their prototypical scale speed with perhaps a 10% margin as a an indicator of motor/drive train capability. It's more of an issue for some models than others and I would concur it's not really one here given what you see in reality. Thanks for sharing.

I do like the Hornby Class 67 and have two Colas ones (Stella - renamed/renumbered & Charlotte) but just put off by Hornby's 8Pin interface to buy anymore as it restricts the functions especially with lighting and the inability to turn off the rear red lights when hauling a rake and looks a bit naff these days compared to the new stuff. Hornby went thru the trouble of adding a switch to choose day/night running but didn't bother with one that switches off the rear red lights which to me would have more important if they couldn't do both. As an fyi the livery is only good to end-2017 as it changed sometime early 2018.
@EuviRail3 жыл бұрын
I would be a fan of the Colas liveried versions for sure. Yeah, the lighting on the Hornby diesels is showing it's age now and severely limited by the 8-pin decoder. I would have preferred the rear lighting control to day/night as you'd use it a lot more. I was checking the livery history on Wikipedia and couldn't see anything on 67013 apart the DB Cargo Red we have here. With locos getting re-liveried every few years it can be very challenging (and expensive) for modelers who wish to stay current!
@sapphirejunction89933 жыл бұрын
@@EuviRail Yes agree a switch to turn off the rear tail lights would have made more sense. This DB 67 seemed to have had the large DB Cargo logo with company spiel put on near April 2018 going by images on Flickr thus the latest images with it having DB Schenker were in 2017. Agree with current day image, keeping up or buying a loco that was but isn't current anymore is a challenge.

Agree with the review its an excellent loco, running performance similar to the Hornby 60 or Dapol 68. I'd never noticed that it couldn't do 125 mph because, like my car, I've never tried the top speed. £99 is a good price, and like the livery, but with 3 already can't justify another. Good that there are a few unsold, I've noticed latest Hornby 60 in GBRf retailing for £187 and with locos selling well looks like the prices for many approaching the £200 mark. I suspect the very expensive Bachmann 47 will still sell out on release.
@EuviRail3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alan. 125mph scale speed is still a fair clip and I wouldn't see many folks going beyond 100mph with this loco. The new loco prices from Hornby are crazy and very poor value given their old designs. If you consider the IRM A-Class is cheaper than a fully priced Class 67 then it's clear the newer RRPs from Hornby don't stack up any more. Interesting to see how the new Bachmann C47 fares alright.
