Bought my parents an Echo dot for Christmas and wanted to get them an accessory for it (smart thermostat, doorbell, etc.) to try and push them more into a more modern smart home direction and decided to go with the Philips Hue bulbs thanks to this review. I think I am going to get them the hub as well, I’m sure they’ll get a kick out of the geofencing functions 😅. Very solid and precise review! You’ve earned my sub.

No problems with Hue lighting? Wow, you lead a charmed life. I set up a system at a friend's house. Worked fine for a month. Now none of the lights are controlled. So I am replacing with Bluetooth lighting, It had better work this time. I have no problem at my own home with the Hue hub bulbs, but others have the same problem with lights not responding over time.

Just a clarification filament != edison. Edison is the type of bulb screw. You can get filament bulbs in both edison and bayonet type.

Google home works not well with the bt bulbs but if you have a hue bridge than it works fine

google mini and Bluetooth smart bulbs have all kinds of problems with holding connection. I recommend stick with Wi-Fi only lights until google can figure this out. Reconnect my Phillip's Bluetooth 7 times over the last 2 weeks and it wasn't easy. Took 4 to 5 attempts of resetting Bluetooth app and rebooting google mini to get it to work again. All other lights and plugs are Wi-Fi with no problem

How do i link to alexa though - if i ask alexa to turn my light on or off it doesnt recognise i have any, i cant only Control through the hue bluetooth app

Have you already set them up, or added them inside the Alexa app? You may also need to sync your devices, which I think you can ask Alexa to do.

Having trouble connecting my hue bulb to my Google home hub realy doing my head in tried to set up device it finds my bulb but when I press next searching for devices it comes up 4 steps check your light make sure the light is screwed in propley looks like it doesn't work that way so will I need a brige to controle 1 light for my living room had no trouble with elexa

I bought another brand of smart lightbulb. The problem is every time someone turns it off from the light switch, I have to re-set up everything and it is a real pain in the butt to sync it to the lightbulbs app as well as to Alexa. How does the Phillips do when you turn it off from the light switch and turn it back on?

No problems. I’ve owned Phillips hue bulbs in my home for years… A lot of them. I’m slowly switching out all my old bulbs for smart ones. Never a problem with any Phillips hue devices as far as I’m concerned.

Thanks for the video. You provided the crucial hint on why I couldn't get the second bulb connected. I had to literally hold the phone on top of the bulb for it to connect. Now all good!

Seriously cool tech! I'm still not sure I understand the differences between the Edison style versus the other types of bulbs. I'll have to go check out your full review and read up. They look pretty fancy. I'm relatively low tech guy when it comes to lights, but who knows. In a few years, this could be the normal way we use lights. Good review, as always. I liked the cactus blouse as well :)

Thanks for this video. I just got the hue go 2.0 for Christmas, it runs on bluetooth and I love it. I'm now wanting to expand and get the lightstrip and e14 colour bulb. Am I right in thinking that the latter two do not come bluetooth enabled and will actually require the bridge?

I had lifx mini colour before, it was way brighter compared to Philips hue bulbs always especially when comparing RGB colors, but lifx had a downside of colour never being true, e.g. when i say to change to yellow it would be very greenish yellow. This doesn't happen with Philips hue. However i upgrades to Philips hue because of the comparability with dumb people(s) i.e. can use the things like Philips hue dimmer switch, when something goes wrong with internet, like with wifi its practically impossible to change without using the app or voice assistant ( need a wifi and often internet too). Because of this great feature i sacrificed a Little bit Of brightness.

These bulbs are definitely frustrating for you and a lot of other people. It’s too bad, because the regular lights when used with the bridge are flawless. I would definitely recommend an upgrade, or to return the Bluetooth lights to the store where you got them

Thanks for the tips. The feature I’m most interested in is being able to turn lights off and on when I’m out of the room (or house); so, out of BlueTooth range. I think I need the Philips hub. BUT, all (both) the Ethernet ports on our Google Nest Router are being used so I can’t connect the Philips hub to our WiFi router. (We use the Xfinity modem but have the Xfinity WiFi router turned to bridge mode). Any suggestions? Thanks!

All I heard was that there are limitations and you love them. I still don’t get how they are smart. You said early the bridge is $80 and near the end that it is $70. When if you buy a Hue starter kit you can usually get the hub for free, and more. Are these just paid adverts for Best Buy and product sponsors?
