I use the 5.6mm size in a lead holder for quick sketches and I love the effect. These are so fun looking! Thanks for the review!

I do that, too! They are so fun for sketching. I love using mine for quick studies of hands, faces, feet, household objects, etc.

I just got the set of 24, and they are very cool, but I still like my original 5.6 mm in the matching magic pencil lead holder best for sketching.

I love these pencils! I do a lot of colouring in colour books that have images that are patterned and have geometrical shapes, and the constant changing colours of these pencils makes them a little more playful and gives them more depth.

I bought a set of 12 to experiment with. I would say that they're aimed straight at the adult colouring book market. I found they're great for areas where a variation of colour is nice (like leaves for example) but there's no control over where the colour variations will fall. They put down a reasonable intensity of colour but are better when blended afterwards. They blended well (I used baby oil) but I found that it was really difficult to lay any more colour over the top (before blending). Overall I'd say they're nice to have as a companion to your regular pencils but I wouldn't have these as my go to colouring set.

What a cute set. I have one pencil from this series - blue-red-yellow. I like to use it my sketchbook. Even very simple sketches look more interesting this way.

Thank you for the review, these really look like fun to use. I have a big set of Koh-I-Noor watercolor pencils and I really like them for small sketches or finishing touch. I saw the Magic pencils in the store too, but never tought they could be so nice.

I'm really debating with myself if I should get the woodless version of these to go with my Faber-Castell Polychromos. I really like the checkerboard mines of them, I bet they work better than the regular rainbow pencils I had as a kid. Those were so unsatisfying l, they never really worked properly ^^'

A very curious product! The short barrel, thick lead and triangular design makes me think they are marketed towards children, but the finish, style and quality seems a lot more mature. Seems like anybody could enjoy experimenting with them. A great review as always, Teoh!

I would love if you did a review on the koh-I-noor woodless color pencils!! Ice been considering buying them, but I would like a review first!

I won't review the woodless pencils anytime soon. There are just too many things to review currently. I need to stop buying stuff. LOL. You should get them. They are not too expensive.

Thanks for the review! But did you try the Koh I Noor ones with more different colors in it (for example purple, yellow and turquoise for the called Tropical one)? I think they are more interesting to use because you really see the color changes. Some of the ones you tried don't show much effect in my opinion. 😉

+Watercolor Sketching I actually prefer the analogous colour scheme in this set. It's much easier and pleasing to use, especially for shading. Random colours can be a bit jarring at times.

I have the set of 24. Also, the 5.6 magic leaf in a clutch holder. The set of 24 is fun, but several of the pencils are so close it's hard to tell the difference. I use them all for quick simple sketching.

They look like fun. Really diversifying your art tools huh? I experimented some today with watercolors on Strathmore 300 series Bristol vellum. I taped down all four edges first and this reduced the buckling and warping quite a lot. The side that was painted on was nice and flat after drying. There were what I call faint craters, for lack of a better term lol, on the opposite side. But there was no bleed through or show through. The Sakura Pigma Micron pens needed a few minutes to dry on this paper, but most ink does with it being so thick. The watercolors laid down nicely and I'd say it's like using hot press paper since there's not a lot of texture to the paper. It does have some, but it's still a smooth surface. All in all it worked out well. For individual pieces this could work out work out well. If one wanted to have it bound into a sketchbook they'd just have to consider whether they could deal with the little bit of warping on the opposite side of the page or not. Guess that would be a personal preference.

Yes, I'm going into mixed media art instead of just watercolour. LOL. It's more fun and challenging. When you change styles, there are always new things to learn.
@higherground7118 жыл бұрын
Strathmore, from what I know of it, offers the thickest mixed media paper. 400 series I believe. If I hadn't read the label first, I would've believed I was holding watercolor paper or card stock.
@teohyc8 жыл бұрын
Be careful of mixed media paper. They can handle water but they are usually not the best for watercolour. Actually, I think watercolour paper is the best mixed media paper. Hotpress ones are nice.
@higherground7118 жыл бұрын
Oh I know ;-). If I use mixed media it's never for watercolors. Pencil, markers, inks etc, it works great for those. But I have some hot press too if I wanna use any watercolor or water soluble media.
