I'm a couple days behind you. 🙂 Hope to finish Malice today. And I had the same thoughts. Slow start, not the best prose, but about halfway through I realised I was invested and couldn't wait to see where it was all going. 😃

John Gwynne can’t write a bad book!

Glad to hear you enjoyed this introduction to the series!! I think we had a very similar reading experience for Malice, so I feel pretty confident in saying that your critiques will fade with the next instalments! The character work gets better, the battle scenes get even more effective and intense, the stakes are raised and the magic/lore definitely comes more into play! Also, prepare for emotional damage ;))) Great review, hope you enjoy the rest of the series 🥰

Just finished this series. I agree with your assessment of Malice. It did feel slow, a bit overwhelming, and I had a few “what’s going on” moments. The overall pacing of the series is like someone accelerating down an expressway on-ramp. Initially you are coasting in, halfway through the turn you start to accelerate (ending of Malice) then you pick up speed until you are at merging speed ( by middle of Ruin), then you jump into the fast lane and leave the slower traffic behind (last half of Ruin and never letting up until the very end of Wrath). The final book was relentlessly paced. So many great characters with excellent arcs by the end of the story. I will look forward to your reviews of the next three books.

Nailed it Jordan. There was a lot I disliked about it but I found myself really anticipating the next book.

I think a lot of the criticism towards the amount of pov characters comes from pretty much all of them being some form of warrior. We do get a little bit more variety as the series progresses but not as much as I would have liked. But despite that criticism not once did i get one character confused for another so Gwynne distinguished the characters pretty well imo. That might not be the case for me now since it's been almost two years since I read it lol

I definitely couldn’t remember some of the characters in Malice. But I think by the end I had a pretty good grasp, so I’m hoping that I won’t have that problem in Valour!
