I am reading The Spear Cuts Through Water right now, I am one third into it, and it is shaping up to be a fantasy masterwork. One of the best things I've read in years.

I cried my eyes out after finishing this book. Such a beautiful story! I was sad it ended. The writing was so unique and lyrical, while at the same time not being overwhelming. And of course there was Keema and Jun; these two characters have left such a deep mark in me, that days later after reading this book I still feel so much longing for them. I hope author Simon Jimenez can read this review because I really wish he would write a sequel! Also, I just want to add that this story can be enjoyed by anyone who loves a great fantasy novel. The LGBT aspect here is so subtle and really just shows how two beautiful souls are drawn to each other. I say that because I know some people might be intimidated by this. I can now surely say that this is already one of my favorite books of all time.

Oh wow, this sounds absolutely fabulous, give me all the unconventional storytelling goodness. I was planning on reading The Vanished Birds first, but your review really sold me on this one and now I don't know what to pick up first, lol. Loved hearing your thoughts!! 🤩

Great review Jordan! I may actually change my mind and start with this instead of Vanished Birds. Can't wait to dive into SimonE.

Yesssss! Another The Spear Cuts Through Water / Simon Jimenez convert! I was lucky enough to get an eARC of it, read it and loved it, then immediately re-read it on release day (and I constantly want to re-read it!). The usage of second person point of view was a perfect creative choice to signify the difference between the narrative timelines. And it makes it seamless on the page. The asides and inputs from the background characters is italicized in the physical novel. The structure isn’t necessarily the same, but, of what I have read, Sarah Tolmie writes much more on the literary side of fantasy, which I feel like The Spear Cuts Through Water is.

I completely agree! I’ve grown to really enjoy second person perspective when it’s done well.

Just finished Vanished Birds and really enjoyed it. I need to get to this one sooner rather than later. Nice video!

100% agree with romance in fantasy! Those are some of my favorites when there is a romance involved. Give me some Stormlight Archive-type fantasy w/ a strong romance. Actually there's a pretty good romanic sub plot in Faithful in the Fallen that I loved! I suppose I could look this up myself but is this a stand alone? Lol
