Review of MODIFIED 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Sport! This is a clean build!

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek was a great year for the vehicle! The all-new Sport trim level gave it the best engine (the 2.5L) without having to pay the price of the premium Limited trim. This specific Crosstrek has been built up as an off-road vehicle, and is quite impressive!

The best thing about a newer subaru is that its awd, off road capable, and cheapest in its class. Its also extremely reliable. 100k mi and i havent even done brake pads. The most annoying thing is that within 3 years, most of my window switches have broken. Cheap plastic. One window doesnt even move anymore.

6:41 I actually love the paddles on mine because I can engine brake with them. Live in the Laurentians and going downhill on cruise the car really gets carried away, super nice to be able to keep my speed in check without having to use the brakes. I use them every time im slowing down and only use the brakes at the last minute.

Also like switching into manual and keeping it in a high gear when I'm alone on the highway, keeps my fuel consumption capped at ~10L/100km. I'd rather the car slow down a bit when going up a hill rather than shift down and scream just to keep my set speed, especially when I know that I'll speed up again going down the other side. Saved me a far bit on gas since I figured this out.

Yeah, the paddle shifters are good for driving hilly/mountainous routes.

Just such an awesome build!! And rad video too. Subscribed!! I really think this is the number one top all around build, sooo clean, and very tastefully done. I'm very particular so far as doing things clean, and with simple color combos and you just nailed it 😃😃😃😃 I wanted to pass a question by ya as I'm looking at a '24 Crosstrek right now. I had a MT '18 Crosstrek, as well as a MT '06 and MT '10 Outback that I got burned by with some of the known Subaru issues of back then. As such, I have felt a bit gun shy until getting that '18 Crosstrek that was sadly lost to a hit and run 😢. It sounds like you really know the Subaru engines, history, and improvements, from your response to the other commenter!! Sooo, I'm buying a '24 Premium (can't quite afford the upper trims 😟) and reliability is always my number one. I'll be doing the 30k transmission fluid, and lower oil change interval, particularly at break in. I've learned more about the CVT these days and sounds like Subaru is way better than a lot of competitors on quality and reliability there. Also, sounds like the TCV has been a little problem since 2018, but sounds like Subaru is covering those under warranty and I'm going to buy the extended warranty for peace of mind. Soooo, my question to you, is specifically pertaining to the head gasket and timing chain, the oil consumption that I've heard is less an issue now, the CVT overall, as well as the TCV. What do you think of those areas and do you think my '24 Premium (which although 2.0L might be easier on the CVT 🤔) is a smart purchase in specific regards to reliability in those areas and overall?? Just raddd content and super appreciate your insights!! 😃😃😃😃

I loveeee my 2022 crosstrek. Runs like it did day 1 and I have over 22000 miles on it. My dream is to have a Tacoma though. What don’t you like about the Tacoma?

Does anyone know what year Subaru fixed the head gasket and timing belt issue?

Basically the FB/FA series engines are the ones that got fixed. 6cylinders rarely got head gasket problems. The aforementioned 4 cylinder engine series are timing chain engines that have been available since 2011 for some models. That being said the high mileage ones leak. Basically everything is sealed with a silicone gasket maker (besides the head gaskets, valve cover gaskets and main seals) Timing belts aren’t really an issue UNLESS you neglect your car and don’t do maintenance. -former Subaru dealer mechanic.

This build seems more show than go. At least it has underside armor. Add a Cusco front LSD, a rear locker, and a winch. I'd prefer long-travel suspension with anti-sway bar disconnects and some siped mudders. 225/65R17 Geolandar MTs should fit the stock 17"rims and larger wheelwells on 2nd and 3rd-gen Crosstreks Then install a switch to turn off the VSC/TCS, while still keeping the center diff clamped. These are still never going to be serious off-roaders though, with their vulnerable bumpers, or their limited lift, travel, wheelwells, gearing, and power/torque. A serious 4WD with an actual tcase can be geared ridiculously low for torque and control. A vehicle that uses automatic brakes/clutches to vector torque can also overheat/burn those. Use actual lockers for serious offeoading.

HOW do the bigger tires etc. effect the performance offroad??? It is a WAY underpowered car......if they put turbo on it- FINE- I'd buy one RIGHT NOW.. but til they do-- ... well, I'm NOT. LET US KNOW how the bigger wheels and tires effect it and the performance.

I have an SK Forester. It's almost the same car as the one in the video. Upgraded to 225/65/r17. It's 0.9" taller in diameter. That yields about a half inch lift. I can't tell the difference in acceleration because the car is already slow compared to today's market. Subaru chose to go with a dummy tire, and the spare tire well likely will not fit anything larger than the OEM size full. WTF Subaru. Plan on putting a full size spare on the roof or hitch.

CVT can work OK. It's not going to be a rockcrawler without 4Low though. Stick to actual dirt trails, rather than boulders and bogs. The vulnerable plastic bumpers are a concern too. LSDs and a rear locker are available. I'd use siped mudders, instead of ATs. Winchmounts, skids, rockers, spare carriers, and steel bumpers are available.

It is absolutely unbelievable that a standard transmission is not offered on this offroad worthy platform. The use of CVT is fine but to snub the offroad user the option of a standard on this platform is to choose to be second rate offroad wise. please note that the two high performance offerings are standard first and regular automatics second. They can do it, they choose not too. @@RKmndo

When I read the title “Review of a MODIFIED…”, I’m expecting a video that focuses on the mods, which this video does, but with much less than half of its length. The rest is a meandering review of the standard features - non-value added content covered by many, many other videos. And why does everyone feel the need to start videos with irrelevant filler? “But before we begin, we need to start with the history of the automobile.”
