Really appreciate this review of yours and your other XF reviews. Always very thorough and you're honest about everything pointing out both pros and cons. I'm picking my XF up in a few days but I'm a little worried in terms of reliability with the car being at 80k miles. It did have a few minor electrical faults I picked up during my test drive which have apparently been sorted. I had a BMW 3 series which gave me absolutely 0 problems whatsoever throughout my 5 years of ownership. I ran that up to 155k miles and would still have it now if a garage I took it into for routine checks didn't take it out and crash it. Following the write off, I then bought a fully loaded 2017 XE at 75k miles, that was riddled with major engine problems which I have since returned. Fingers crossed for the XF as I'm wanting to give Jag another chance. If this one fails me I'll be going back to BMW for sure.

Good to see you back in the fold Hilton. The 2016 model is much improved regarding the touch screen display and dashboard and many of the earlier niggles were finally addressed by Jaguar. I hope it will serve you well. Looking forwards to more videos on the experiences of owning this car. I still have my MK1 3.0 s Added new wheels to it in the summer as I found those split rim 20 inch XKR wheels too noisy and uncomfortable. I'm also getting about 5mpg more now with the new wheels. I also added a tuning box. One I have used many times before and now have a healthy 313 BHP and 650 torques. 😎 I will probably be following your lead and heading down the same road as you with the 2.0 petrol model next year. There's a few new colours available some the MK1 and I really fancy the dark metallic blue colour so will be looking for one of those. Have fun. Keep us posted.

Thanks Dave. I'm very happy with this new XF so far. It's super powerful, thanks to the turbo. Wow! 5MPG more is quite an improvement. Funny how wheels can have an effect on gas, but it sure does. That's a great result and 313 bhp is respectably powerful. That's a little more than my 5.7L Z8 Camaro used to do - it put out 300 bhp exactly. And you're running a 4.2? That's super cool! I must be honest, I almost bought an S-Type because I'm just in love with them. I like the X-Type too, but too small and under powered. I've even looked at XK's which are now way more affordable than they were before - and becoming collectors items already. But the cost of owning one put me off. Take care and keep watching ;-)

I currently have an S type 2.7 D that still takes me back to the good old days of Jaguars. As it's getting on in years I've just started thinking of a three year old or so XF. Love the exterior looks of the newer R sport, though do agree with your thoughts on the lack of wood inside. ( I'm now one of the older generation, so do think you have taste young man)! Have been looking at all the reviews etc on KZbin and am thinking a 2.0 petrol R sport is the way to go. Have subscribed to your channel and am looking forward to your mod's videos when they come out.

Thanks for watching. Mine was a 2L and I sold it last year to buy an older XFR. If you do buy an R-Sport, try and get one with wood inside. It will just lift the interior. A light interior will also make a world of difference. I just chose the wrong options when buying mine. It's very powerful and very fast, but economical on fuel.

Saturday I found and bought an immaculate 2016 XF S deisel ex demonstrator, low mileage, which is rammed full of upgrades. It's so much more fun on the road than the last one. Missing some of the oppulence of it predecesor but the increase in BHP and lower weight makes a massive difference. Picking it up tomorrow. This time I'm getting the underbody sealed so I can enjoy it longer.

Hey Hilton......I really like the new XF. My car, like yours, has the piano black trim which as you know is easily scratched. It can be buffed to remove the swirls but is super time consuming. Ammo NYC has a video of his method of cleaning, buffing, and protecting piano black trim. You might want to give him a look see, he is a great detailer and generous with sharing his experience. The black trim above the dash is available in carbon fiber to match your CF exterior bits if interested. I would be very interested in a how video of you removing it the wrap around pieces. As for the “rough grained” dash pad.....it is a molded vinyl as I know it. Closer examination of the faux stitching is the tale-tell. My trimmer did not recommend covering in leather because of our summer heat. Thank you for all your videos.
@carfanfan
@carfanfan 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lorenzo. I don't like carbon fiber inside a car. It's place is outside of the car. All CF interiors I've seen date quickly and don't look good. Wood is classic and becomes exactly that. I follow Ammo NYC channel and have seems his video on piano black maintenance, but with wood, one doesn't have to lift a finger and enjoy that luxurious feel when driving. I'm seriously looking at the wood option. It will mean removing all four door pads, which I will show in a video if I go that route. 😉

I have a 2014 LHD 30l V6 XFs Petrol, I bought while I was working in Qatar, then imported into the UK. The dash leather was never a problem, but the rubberised butyl coating went a gooey mess in the 50+ Celsius (130 F) summer heat. I spent hours with a small brush and some Iso-Propyl alcohol, removing it and the white button legends. I prefer the old dash 4 vent layout, it just looks cool with the synchronised vent deployment on startup! I love my car, especially the pre-facelift with the bonnet meeting the front grille, instead of that hideous bumper line on the new one, to meet new pedestrian impact safety requirements. I love the new rear light cluster though, but you're right about the boot lid spoiler, not quite overhanging the boor edges, it just looks wrong. Overall though the lines are sleeker and slightly more aggressive than my older version.

Thanks for watching Jeff. I know what you mean, I always used to do that with my 2008 model. It's just such a beautiful classic design. My new one is also beautiful, but I think the older generation was way more beautiful because of it's Astin Marin influenced design. I'll be getting wood into this car one way or another. I will be trawling eBay to see if I can find a salvaged XF with wood and perhaps buy all the wood panels from that car. It would be easy to swap them over. Otherwise, I'll have to find a way to woodify (is that a word?) the car myself ;-)

Hey Vaibhav, thanks for watching my videos. I think you're aiming for the pick of the crop - it has everything and will probably be specced just right. There aren't many things to look out for, except that it has been serviced and maintained according to Jaguar's schedule. If you watch my first video of why I bought this XF, you will know that I went through quite a process while looking at XE's. Finding out that they were either struck from Jaguar's warranty list or blacklisted for being serviced late. Only advice I can give is get the VIN of the car you're interested in and contact a Jag dealer to give you the full service history and warranty history on the car and that alone will tell you a story about the car. You will love the 3L s/c - that exhaust note is pure heaven.

Hilton hi I saw your first video and I am glad I watched it. I was going down the route like you looking to buy XE but was not very happy with options. Really interesting video. My husband, Errol Khan, has the piano black in his 2nd generation Jaguar XF, and while it lloks great, you're right, in that it does scratch and is a finger print magnet. The front of your car is really stunning, but Jaguar has toned down the agression from the side and rear to make it appeal to the BMW 5 series and Mercedes C Class fans. Nevertheless, it's a Jaguar and is beautiful. I think I prefer the 2nd generation, not for the technology, but for it's lines.

Hi Hilton, I've been watching your videos/comments all day now and was hoping if you can give any advice on buying a 2013 XFR, will it be as reliable as the N/A engines or should one stay away from Jag's supercharged engines?
@carfanfan
@carfanfan 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Nick, thanks for watching. Jaguar's s/c engines are generally very good. They don't seem to suffer from supercharger failure like Mercedes does. The only issue you might pick up with a 5.0 s/c or a 3.0 s/c are coolant leaks. But that is usually the case with their n/a engines as well. An XFR is a good choice, top spec and loads of power. Just make sure it has been loved before you buy it. If the previous owner didn't care about it, chances are you're going to end up with a hefty repair bill for catch-up maintenance. I'd also recommend getting a 2 year warranty to cover you if anything does go wrong. That's what I do when I buy cars. Never buy one with no previous Jaguar dealer service history, because chances are the service history is then tainted or not true. You can then call the dealer who serviced it to check if they picked up any issues with the car. I've been looking for an XFR myself, but there are only 7 for sale here and they are all tainted in some way. Two have been in accidents just having done a visual inspection of the paint and bodywork and the rest have broken service history with non-Jaguar dealers and the one has a terrible rumble coming from the idler pulley so I know it hasn't been serviced in a long time. If you do your homework upfront before buying you won't have any regrets later ;) Good luck, I hope you find one that's perfect for you. They are great cars and you will fall in love after the first drive.

A gorgeous XF Hilton. Looks very smart in silver, which is a rare colour here. Definitely replace the spoiler with a larger carbon fibre look. I would provide a great contrast. And a light wood trim on the inside would look classy. I'm sure you could buy the wood inserts. I think you said your car was the R-Sport version. If so, how is the suspension as sometimes it can be very firm in the UK cars anyway? :-)

Thanks Andy. Thanks for the the feedback. I'm definitely looking at doing the wood trim. As for the suspension, it is very spotty, but absorbs undulating surfaces way better than my Mazda CX-5 did. It is so forgiving you hardly feel potholes. And the ride is Jag smooth. When it's in Dynamic mode and the transmission is in Sport, the steering becomes heavier, the suspension firm's up and it becomes and F-Type with four doors. 😁

Over 2 years old but thanks for sharing your experience with your jaguar. Did you buy it brand new or was it an approved used? I find approved used cars can often be lemons which have been returned to the dealers for them the make shiny and sell on again. With regards to the reliability of the car itself, tbh its all subjective and often you only hear of the bad experiences. There are definitely some common issues with the car, Timing chains, Engine mounts, Wheel bearings, A/c leak and Bluetooth issues. Almost everything else is due to poor maintenance or bad luck. The A/c high pressure pipe has a common point of leakage near the a/c top up valve. The A/c pipes are mounted onto the chassis and held together via metal clips surrounded by rubber grommets. I believe the engine vibrations cause the rubber/metal to effectively erode or wear the pipe and cause a pinhole leak. A design flaw perhaps? Timing chain issues are common across all makes and models of cars. Engine mounts and wheel bearings wear prematurely on these. Perhaps they used softer rubber to reduce NVH at the expense of durability. The car is very sporty yet comfortable, a balance many manufactures find hard to strike.

This car was a demo used by one of their salesmen. They couldn't get the car sold, so they parked it for 2 years to depreciate it on their books and then flipped it at the depreciated cost to me. There were 5 XFs in total they sold that day. All heavily marked down. My guess is standing so long caused more damage than if it were driven. These cars don't like to stand idly. A 4 year old car with just 10,000 miles on the clock with motor plan was too tempting to pass up. But I won't do it again.

I wasn’t a fan of the piano black either so I got it switch out for carbon fiber. It’s al carbon fiber including the middle console. The only negative is the carbon fiber on the open/close AC vents is starting the peel on the edges. :/
@carfanfan
@carfanfan 4 жыл бұрын
Did you have it wrapped in carbon fiber? If so, they didn't do a good job then. A wrap must be applied with a heat gun and cover the edges of the panel right to the back side of the panel. The vent aluminum should be removed to wrap it properly. This means, parts of the dash must be removed in order to do it. Easy if you know how :) but necessary to prevent peeling in the future. The problem with wrap is that it shrinks when the sun shines on it, so one needs to ensure it is tightly wrapped around the back edge of the panel as well to ensure it doesn't peel off.

Hey David, I had a 3L petrol before. The 3L diesel is a beast of a car, but the DPF is very expensive to replace and when this fails, the car goes into limp mode. Most people choose not to replace it when it's due for replacement and then suffer down line because they didn't service the car properly. I'd stay away from the 2.7 though, it has many turbo issues. The 3L diesel is solid, but will have issues if it wasn't maintained properly. I'd also look at a 2L diesel if you can find one (2014/2015 model), they are solid, but not as much power as the 3L diesel.

Ofc from a car dealer :) Cause of "low budget" I would even consider one with over 100k Would love to hear your opinion! Thanks in advance :)

Don't buy a Jag! I'm on my 2nd one now. The first was an 03 S Type. It was an excellent car. I gave it to my cousin when I bought my 2012 XF Supercharged V8 Portfolio Edition. I've spent thousands of dollars on repairs for this car. I hope it catches on fire 🔥! However the best are the 1st generation so I'm told. If you absolutely have to have one. But I'd recommend rethinking your choice for a Jag.

The cam belt will need changing at 10 years or 110000 miles. Then the water pump and fuel pump timing belt at 140000 miles May as well do all three at once as they are located in the same proximity Rear axle bushes on both sides may need renewing at about the same mileage. Depending on the road conditions the car has faced. These jobs are well within the scope of an independent garage as Jaguar will charge a fortune for parts and labour. Alternators tend to go at about plus 80000 miles. They are the smart charge system as used by ford. Independent will charge about 400 UK pounds. One of the bottom turbo hoses can fail and it's best to replace that with a Sparco silicon hose. You can do that yourself. One thing to watch for is that all the back lights work correctly as the MK1 had a wiring loom issue. This should be classed as a design fault and will set you back about 300 UK pounds at jaguar. Other than that you should be fine. The engines and gearboxes are bullet proof and we'll tried and tested.

And then I came across the jag... In my opinion he beats a5 and c class/e class miles! From your feedback repairing all those things isn't a issue for me or the money for repair doenst matter as long as my jag works ^^ Thank you guys :)!

If I could have put the 15 V8 in the 16 car, I'd have two of them. I'm just not impressed with the V6. Jaguar is falling into the same boxed in trap Lincoln did with the LS. The newer car looks even better than the 15, but sadly it's as exciting as a 4 cylinder festiva to drive, no offense.

No offense taken. I agree. No replacement for displacement is my motto. This car lacks an XFR version. This R-Sport nonsense is just a sheep in wolves clothing. Thanks Artur. I found a really good wood veneer vinyl which I plan to cover the piano black with. It has a nice rich color and texture to it, so I will give it a whirl. Yeah, unfortunately I had to do what I could. The facelift sorted out all the cheap materials and lifted the interior to where it should have been when this car was launched but it was too little too late. Now this model is dead. Jagaur sealed its fate when they went cheap on everything and my guess was Tata was behind it all. This car was a missed opportunity.

Hilton can't believe you bought another one. I also made that same mistake. I had a perfectly good S Type 03, 4.2 V8 I gave it to my cousin when I made the mistake of buying my 2012 XF Supercharged V8 Portfolio Edition. I've spent thousands of dollars on repairs for this car. Water pump, fuel pump, computer, wire harness in the trunk, new trunk latch and now I'm told that at 82k miles I need new motor mounts and the transmission mount is crushed. So how are you enjoying your imitation leather interior, you cheap "piano black" plastic interior trim, the plastic cup holder cover, the plastic dashboard, and all the other items that Tata is cheaping out on to successfully ruin JLR. I've left strict instructions for my repair shop: IF it catches on fire 🔥 DON'T put it out! Hope you have better luck with yours than I have with mine! This will be my last Jag. Anyone thinking of buying any Jag spend a $150 and have a prepurchase inspection done on the car. I had that done it passed very well and still i have all these problems.
@carfanfan
@carfanfan 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian - I'm really sorry to hear about your terrible experience. The problem with any performance variant of any brand of car, is if you buy a used one, you can bet the previous owner thrashed the crap out of it while it was still under warranty - this will have no doubt put tremendous strain on most components such as suspension, mountings, bearings etc and most of all, the engine and gearbox itself. This is why I bought a 2L and not a 3.0L supercharged because it will definitely have given me trouble as it ages. The car I bought has higher spec with genuine leather, but yes, that piano black is something I absolutely despise - but apparently, the younger generation like that I'm told. I dumped my old XF because it got to that age where things were going to go wrong - it's like playing the stock market, you need to know when to buy and when to sell. I have no doubt the person who bought my car is probably sitting with large bills right now as the tranny needed it's 10 year service this year. I've learnt from my own mistakes in the past and will never buy a used performance car again because the previous owner will have gotten the most of out it and you will end up with the repair bills. If you buy any performance car with any brand, buy it new. The same will be true of Audi's RS models, Merc's AMG models (I see this on Hoovie's Garage channel), BMW's M models. I could have bought a 2015 XFRS instead of this car, but with high mileage and a performance engine, I had no doubt there would be repair bills following my purchase and I wasn't going down that road again. The same would have happened if I'd bought an Audi RS6 or an AMG E Class of the same model year. They're all trouble when they get old.
