Had 6 Jags to date, 2 of which were XF's a Premium Lux and a Portfolio S, both 3ltr and both superb to drive, the latter was noticeably better having 275 bhp and shed loads of tourque. Now driving an XJ Portfolio and it feels even better, handling, performance, economy and looks, an incredible car all round. Jag really have pulled the rabbit out of the hat across the whole range, now offering a serious alternative to the more common German options.

A nice review. I have a 2015 XF in Portfolio spec and was looking at swapping for a 2nd Gen model. However, Jaguar saw fit to mess about with the spec, and things that were standard on the 1st Gen Portfolio, such as ventilated seats and the 850W Meridian Surround system (which is awesome and well worth having) became options, or weren't available. Yes, the Ingenium engines are better, the car is lighter and looks refreshed, but there wasn't a direct swap for me. The interiors are also nowhere near as good. The steering wheel switchgear for example is all black plastic and looks cheap by comparison. The interior materials are just not the same standard, and the XE was also a real disappointment. If punters have the money and aren't obsessed with ridiculous number plate snobbery, go for an earlier 3 litre V6 XF Portfolio rather than a 2nd Gen of a similar age with reduced spec. I love your videos BTW.
@jodeld18394 жыл бұрын
VFR Bore - I have the same age /spec XF as you and was quite disappointed in the X260. The interior is very poor in comparison to the earlier model. What looks like an upturned dog's feeding bowl in the centre of the steering wheel would really annoy me.
@MECUXD4 жыл бұрын
Funnily enough I recently bought a 2013 XF in this Caviar purple, and specifically sought the color for its rarity. I sought out and chose the earlier model because it is just a nicer quality experience - as much as I like Jaguar, I find the penny pinching too evident in the 2016 plus models. You notice it in many areas, but stylistically the hood that no longer pours over the grill, but instead has a straight edge that stops short, splitting the hood and grill in a cheap manner. As well, the earlier design had wider hips and gave the car a more sultry, sporty look, versus the newer, streamlined body that looks more pedestrian. Same with the tail lights - they now match the F-Type, but lack the smooth integration of lights with the chrome accent that was quite elegant. The exhaust tips went from integrated shiny ovals to cheap looking circle cut outs. Another feature I use often is the ability to open any of the four doors since they all have unlock buttons. Inside, as mentioned, you get the motorized center vents, and the gear selector is a metal affair, not a flimsy plasticky piece. It has yet to get old to see all the 'strom and drang' as you fire the motor and the car comes to life. The dial is also off center to be closer to the driver - a small detail that was probably removed for cost, but also makes it less special imo. Other small details, like the seat controls that are color matched vs black (for power seats), or the quality of the leather, and the fact that after 2015, more of what you touch is hollow or hard plastic vs soft-touch, leather, or metal. I know the new chassis is aluminum and thus lighter, but I think there's something to be said for a feeling of heftiness, especially in a car that is not a sport car first and foremost, but a luxury ride. In the USA, I think the 2012-2015 MYs are the sweet spot for the updated styling and old-school investment dollars (thanks Ford!), with 2012 being extra special as you could get V8s commonly still. With each iteration from the original, the special character of the XF has been whittled away, and not always for the better. Oh and compared to the BMWs and Audis? The XF is much more special, as the Germans have also become effused with cheap plastic in addition to being as common as Camrys..
@lestrem113 жыл бұрын
Just my two penny worth. Tried this year XF , bmw 520d and Audi A5 3.0 tdi sline. The Audi was ALOT better to drive and cheap as chips to run.

Same. I would have preferred a cream leather interior to be honest, but overall I love the car. I went for the 3.0 V6 235bhp model.
@TheWhiskeyMan-rk7qv4 жыл бұрын
Yep mines similar. It's a 12 plate premium lux in black with the black leather upholstery. The dated infotainment system is pretty sluggish and the built-in sat-nav is shocking. Still, it's no deal-breaker as it's very simple to use, and I bought the car simply for its elegant looks and incredibly luxurious interior rather than its fancy gizmos. I just use Google Maps through the phone to find my way around. Overall, despite the odd annoying thing like the hesitant ZF box and the lack of rear-seat space, It's a far nicer and more rewarding car to own than any Mercedes-Benz, Audi, VW, or BMW I've been in.
@andyhopton4 жыл бұрын
@@TheWhiskeyMan-rk7qv I think most people use the sat nav from their phones, I changed to Waze as its on a social media type platform and is real time as people can report on it warnings ie floods, potholes even Police, so handy on a quiet stretch of the motorway, I only use the inbuilt sat nav as a backup if im going somewhere remote or into a city with tall buildings.

@@randomxnp ... Our second car is a 68 reg Mercedes Benz A200 which has the all singing all dancing MBUX Sat-nav. I'm not overly impressed that either and find the mobile phone Sat-nav is still far quicker to respond in difficult driving scenarios, plus speed camera and heavy traffic warnings. Also, I too don't see any point in forking out £100 or more to update the Jaguar one to 2020. Especially when I can just ask Google assistant for directions via my voice, instead of fannying around on the slow 8yr old touch screen whilst not watching the road and potentially causing a motorway pile up. Yes, in built sat-navs have come a very long way in the 15 or 20 years they've been around, but I don't think they're quite there yet. Saying that, I've heard the Audi and Tesla ones are really good.
@TheWhiskeyMan-rk7qv4 жыл бұрын
@@randomxnp ... Yes, some of them do in the form of Apple car play & Android auto. Just hook your phone up to the infotainment system via usb, and you have Google maps on the infotainment screen. I used this feature on a rented 2016 Opel Corsa in Alicante Spain and it was brilliant. Going back to my Jag, I recently used the Sat-nav as an experiment to see how far the technology has come in just a few years. It probably would've been an ok system back when it was new, but in 2020 it's hideously outdated.

I must have some chinos and a Panama hat somewhere because my 16 plate XF 2.0D is identical to the one you are driving. The colour (Odyssey Red / Latte leather) combination looks smart IMO. I previously owned a 2013 Mk1 2.2D Sportbrake. Differences:- the engine is chalk and cheese compared to the old tractor engine. Smoother and far more punch. Combined with a huge weight reduction due to the use of aluminium panels, performance is much improved and economy is far better. Over 42,000 miles in the old car I averaged 35 mpg. I drove the new car home from Poole , 331 mile and, averaging 61mph, returned 54mpg. That included a long spell of stop /start just after joining the M1 from the A43. Extras mine came with include electric seats with driver memory and electric folding mirrors., rear view camera - which I would highly recommend. Can't agree about the quality of the rubber around the volume control or the control stalks - they are fine.. Infotainment system better than the Mk1, still a long way behind the best of the Germans - but adequate.
@jack11092 жыл бұрын
Update. After almost 2 years of ownership, I like this care more and more. Ride and handling are great. And (despite your rude comments) I still like the colour and interior. Economy has proved excellent at a consistent 41-42mpg over 15,000 miles. Measured by brimming the tank and not on the trip compute which is about 10% optimistic. Large boot space and good legroom in the rear now. One downside still the road noise which is too high for a car of this class - your really notice the quiet on those new smooth tarmac surfaces on some roads. Would definitely recommend this car

I agree on the interior. When they came out, I was shocked at how cheap and shonky the materials were. I found build quality on the ones I tried to be very average and in some cases, terrible. Bad panel fit, misaligned trim, loose interior fittings, poor finish etc. The previous XF wasn’t perfect inside, the centre console in particular was cheaply executed, but it looked and for the most part, felt like a luxury product. Even if the reality was that it was only really veneer deep. But the X260 version doesn’t even offer that. You’re right, it’s a Ford Focus level interior on a car that’s priced as a luxury car. Not hard to see why they’re not selling when you couple that to the poor pricing, bland looks, underwhelming Diesel engine and meagre specification.

Nice car, but I much prefer my facelifted MK1 XF. It looks more elegant both inside and out, and the interior is far more high quality and luxurious. I do like the mk2, it's a very good all-rounder. It just lacks the magic that the MK1 had. If you're struggling to choose between the old and new, I'd say go for a top of the range MK1 with low miles. It'll cost you the same as an entry level MK2, but you'll be far more in love with it.

Like my S-type too. It spends more time in the overtaking lane than it perhaps should. It really is an odd car but if you don't mind paying the fun tax it will always put a smile on your face.

I've owned a 2016 F R-Sport 3.0 since 2019 and it's now at 91,000km. Honestly I can't say enough about how much I love and respect this car - been a rock sold daily driver with almost no issues outside a nagging rear camera issue and a couple leaks at 85,000km. Looks amazing, tons of power, wonderful handling, and I always look back at it when I park at the grocery store. Love modern Jags, it's just a shame they ditched the V6 and are moving to EV now - I will be hard pressed to replace this car with anything near as engaging.

How have you found the servicing costs on this car? The jaguar service schedule seems so expensive
@Thanos.m4 жыл бұрын
I've test driven an XE and been in a new XF and honestly you can't fault the way they drive but you're absolutely right the simply don't feel as special as Jags of the past plus the engine options are bit lacking in comparison again with jags of the past

We test drove a MK2 XF Sportbrake back in Jan. We loved the way it looked, drove etc. but the real dealbreaker for us was the interior. It just felt like it had been the recipient of some serious cost cutting, and felt cheap and tinny. The interior was almost a step back from the MK1 in terms of quality to be honest. Either way keep up the good work Matt, loving your videos!

Ah... I was so impressed by the 1st gen XF I actually bought an XF S Portfolio over an XJ. The 2nd gen just can’t get me excited, to me it’s uglier and the fact that I’m having a hard time distinguishing between the XF and the XE doesn’t help. Most XFs here in the UK looks like they have 16” wheels too :) And lastly, the only two litre engine I’ve ever had worth having in a “premium car” was in my A45. Oh well, I’m probably just grumpy! Lovely review as ever!

Just bought a 2009 3.0D XF which is lovely. I hired an e-pace a few years ago which had the 2.0 240hp thing turbo diesel and really didn't like it. You'd put your foot down, get nothing, then loads of power followed by a really hard kick down on the gears. Made setting off quickly horrible. Found myself having to drive it smoothly and slow.

I have this with the 3 litre V6, the mileage is good and has some real poke when needed. Some people say the 3L is the better engine as it runs at lower revs when cruising so is more economical than the 2L…… not sure on that but it’s a great car to drive.

Haha, I guess I fall in the chino and Panama brigade, although I have never worn a Panama! I recently watched a video on a similar Aubergine coloured Bentley Turbo R, and I must agree with that presented when he said that not many cars look good in this "Royal Purple" hue....this is all right, but yes, red looks quite impressive on an XF. Typically, I do not like red cars, but Jaguars almost always look magnificent in red. But when I buy a car, I want it to impress me, and not bystanders and other motorists. If they think Jaguars are unreliable, I say "whatever" because then you can pick up a decent one for minimal outlay, Thank you for sharing your impressions and opinions on the XF as it is extremely helpful to me in making a purchasing decision. Cheers, HPA!

I had a S-Type and changed it for a 3.0d S. Portfolio with all the extras. It was an ex-demo or press car because it had every option. Mapped it to 325bhp but found myself being a hooligan in it. Loved all the toys but I preferred the sedate pace of the S-Type. In terms of looks I much prefer the pre-facelift mk1 XF. Looks more butch and aggressive for me.

Known as the MK3 by some. I have the facelift ....mk2? 2.2 XF Sport LE which was only available for 12months before being rebadged as The R-Sport. I work for JLR (at the engine plant) and truth be told I wanted the 2.2 which they stick in a number of cars/vans and is Peugeot in all but name.Its well proven and they stick it in the top spec MK4 Mondeo's. Its also more powerfull than the Ingenium at a shade under 200bhp. Average MPG over 2 years is 41mpg which I thinks good for the cars size & performance. You are not alone in thinking they have cheapened the Interior....I have heard many say the same thing. Good review though and at least they are not driven by Knuckle Draggers who drive like they own the road....BMW, Audi drivers...I am looking at you!!!!!!!

I own a 2016 XF-R and I can say that I'm verry happy with it . The engine is great , gearbox is quick enought , depending on how heavy your foot is , the MPG is good , overall I can't complain of anything so far . The only anoing thing is that the fron Bonnet release lever is on the passenger side and it took me 15 min to find it when I first bought the car 😅

My in law had the original xf in 2009 and the first face-lift xf in 2012 in a cherry red with the black pack and a 3 litre v6 diesel. He has had a 5 series and an e class and he is adamant that the xf was the best of both worlds as you got the drive feel of the BMW and the comfort of the e class and is the best car he has ever driven. Would be good to see a review of the first face-lift model Sport brake in the S spec if you ever get one.

I've been looking at one of these as my next car, it ticks almost every box for me. If I were to get one I would definitely go for the Werthers spec, and I'm barely old enough to be a millenial. 17" or 18" wheels because the 20" will just ruin the ride (the 17" 15 spoke wheels look great to me, which are the ones on your car), black paint, black dash "latte" interior, walnut trim (which means I'll have to go for portfolio spec). Manual's only available with the 2L single turbos, so I'll be locked to that, which is a shame I'd pick the 3L as well otherwise. Meridian system for sure, seems to be a common option on used cars which is nice. I'd go for one with real gauges too, I think all-screen gauges are kind of nasty and I prefer real instruments from a aesthetic point of view, and they will probably age very poorly (my dad's W213 E-class, which I drive occasionally, has them). There's actually a XF for sale in almost that exact spec on autotrader (dark red paint instead of black, dark brown dash instead of black, but everything else is good), and I could afford it up front if I liquidated most (80-90%) of my stocks, but that's probably a bad idea since I've managed to put together a very undervalued portfolio... And I doubt my credit's good enough for a reasonable interest rate cash loan, so yeah, maybe next time. If I had to make any observations I'd say the screen's a little low down, I prefer the screen to be up nice and high so I don't need to take my eyes off the road to look at the navigation. Not really a problem most likely, since I'd be using waze and I could just stick my phone above the vents.

I'd refer to the later model as the MK3. You had the original XF (MK1) then they facelifted it, most noticeable the headlights changed (MK2) then the last model you are in (MK3). Unfortunately the latter model seemed to use XE interior parts which if you spent more money, you'd expect a difference.

Totally agree, modern Jags are fantastic! After the 06 XJ I had, despite the problems I had with it, I’d 100% have another one, was a great car. The XE I hired a few years ago, wow, amazing. XF looks much better now it’s been facelifted but, those wheels, really not very nice to look at! Fab review, as always

I much prefer the X250 to the X260 - and not just because I have a facelift X250. The newer model is definitely 'cheaper' all round and neither the interior or exterior styling can match the earlier car in my opinion. The spec is also lower across the range with plenty of omissions when compared to the earlier model. Close, but no cigar .....
