You are an ace at being able to deliver videos without having to edit them! It takes me forever to put together a short video and it doesn't help that I'm deaf, but the more I do it, the faster the process gets. My '86 doesn't have a grille that fills the gap between the windshield and hood and I think all 924/944/968's were like that out of the factory. They do have the cowl cover at the base of the windshield, like yours.

Hoovie just posted about his two Allentes. Northstars. He gets himself in to some nice junk. I have little interest in his Lambo, etc. Tavarish lost me as a viewer early on during his burned twin turbo Lambo. Just winging it and getting so much wrong. I get “learning as you go”, (see that kid restoring the Fiero channel!), but Tavarish was making it up as he went and avoided learning anything. And certainly dished out bad advice. And I feel real bad for anyone who buys one of his cars when they later fail spectacularly.

Casey I love my '83. It's got its quirks and it's light, revs quickly and handles great. Since picking it up in November I've replaced belts, water pump, plugs and wires, fluids, shocks and struts, tires, fuel filter and new ventilated discs up front. When I first drove it home it darted, weaved, and banged across the highway. Now it's a different car and lives up to its potential. Amazing car for being almost 40 years old.

As the owner of a Spirit R/T with the Lotus head, I happened to have the Borroughs tool to do the timing belts on these and was pretty good at them after "helping" the local garages a couple times. Eh, I still get access to tow trucks or first dibs on a lost project here and there. But they are easy to work on. A couple of them had those "weight saving perforated zip-ties" holding the lower valance together. When one of my friends would bust on me for going Zip-Tie McGyver, "Porsche used them on 944's more than I just did and it worked". I think the '86 Turbo was the quickest production car through the 1/4 mile that year, and I only remember that because I am a Turbo Buick guy and collect old magazines. The LC2 was just behind it and a lot cheaper. I might pick one of these up some day as the tables have turned...

I miss my 944. I also had an '83. I bought it from my friend's boss in January of '94...for $3,000! It was a manual in Copenhagen Blue with tan leather. It was in spectacular condition. I wish I never sold it, but about a year later the steering rack went and I was broke, so I sold it. But in retrospect, that was an INSANE deal for an 11 year old 944! This is making me very nostalgic... And yeah, as a musician, I fit a 4x12 speaker cabinet and amplifier with my guitars in the back no sweat! BUT, I learned a lesson: Take the key out after you open the hatch. I was pulling that speaker cabinet out and sheared the key off in the lock cylinder. Then for $135, my dealer was able to get me another. I had no spare. It sat in my friend's driveway for a couple weeks.

Magnets for your rally lights? You would want to put a good ceramic coat on the paint first, and attach the magnets to the light pod. The trick would be to make sure you create enough magnetic surface area on the pod so that they can overcome winds. You would want a bond that requires some tool (like a plastic trim remover) to separate the pod from the body when not in use. Strong neodinium ones recovered from hard drives have amazing strength. Thanks for these videos. I love seeing the cool cars for my youth live on.

What's flaky about the most simple German Bosch electronics, other than apparently you don't understand them? I'm sure there are odd ducks that need new tt bearings under 200K miles - but they're outliers. Obviously, the 944 isn't for you, but for someone who knows anything about modern cars - it's a simple, reliable car. And can be fast in 951 guise...

If Casey's video has you interested in purchasing your own 944, you may want to check out the 944 buyer's guide at www.clarks-garage.com. There's a link on the left titled "Purchasing a 944"

Yes! Totally do the rally build on it! Rally Porsches are so cool and really not to common because all the snobs don't like it.

I want another 944! Gave me the itch again! Damn it Casey! You got a hell of a deal on the 944 Casey. Can't find anything that nice for that price in my area. Cheapest I found within 100 miles of me was 5000 and it was trash.

Thanks for the guide! I’m looking into buying one of these as my first project “car” after I’m done with me and my dads 2001 xj cherokee!

Excellent car. I had a 944 with the same spec only in white for two years. Bought it on EBay for similar amount of moneys and imported it to Israel. With AC and everything working. Great car for self maintenance. Lot of work was done on the parking lot... Transaxle oil is replaced without lifting the car. I have only good things to say about this car. By the way, nice "snobby" Rolex. ;)

Hey Casey I might be wrong but I think the wind deflector is the ONLY thing that keeps the front of the sunroof down. You might want to check on that.

I am a rather nervous-nelly when it comes to posting comments, but after watching this video, I felt like I should chime in for once. I am 27 and I own a Ruby Red 1984 944 N/A 2.5L 5-spd that came off the showroom floor (back around the late 80's, it sat as a dealerships prized possession for a couple years) with 15 inch gold Fuchs rims with factory offset and a lock-lug for all 4 wheels, A/C, PS, electric sunroof, the works. The car came into our possession after my father bought it for $500 from his brother's neighbor, who didn't want to put money into a new clutch at the time, back in '99-2000 (I was 8 at the time). After we got it, we garage-kept it for about 16 years before I started to daily drive it (when I turned 24, after replacing the rubber-type with a spring-type clutch, timing belts, water pump, spark plugs, lower-temp thermostat and ditching the stock, thick 20W-50 oil for todays 10W-40 High Mileage synthetic blend). The odometer stopped working while it was sitting in the garage and is stuck at 65,938 original miles on it, but I have put about 15-20k miles on it since taking it out, so it has got ~80-85k miles on the motor overall and still runs like a champ after 3 consecutive years of daily life without major issues. I absolutely love how simple it is to work on this car and relatively easy it is to maintain it. To anyone who is on the fence about getting one, or are thinking that "these cars aren't/cannot be reliable, being almost 40 years old and all" or that "it must get terrible gas mileage being a big 4 cylinder from the 80's" should learn a little bit of the story/history behind its' prestigious racing counterpart. - In 1981, the 924 GTP LM/944 LM (in which the production model 944's & 944 Turbo's were based on), driven by Walter Rohrl and Jurgen Barth, finished 7th OVERALL and was competing against cars with DOUBLE the engine size AND spent LESS THAN AN HOUR IN THE PITS during the entire 24 HOURS of Le Mans, which I believe at the time was a record (I cannot find anything that says otherwise, and even if it didn't actually set a record per se, they were given a prize regardless). These cars were so advanced at the time, they would stop firing injectors while off the throttle (thanks to Bosch's EFI), thereby using 0 fuel on deceleration, and would kick back on when under 1,600 RPM (European cars only, otherwise it was 1,350 RPM for American versions, hence the reason you hear about "The 944 shudder" in forums) or whenever you got back on the throttle. Thanks for listening to my two cents, great video, keep up the good work! P.S. I see in the video that the brake fluid was about half-full, that is dangerously low for this car, as you run the risk of getting air in the clutch/brakes. On the reservoir, it shows the min arrow being about 3/5th's full and the max being filled to the cap. Also, if your feeling adventurous, you could put slotted rotors on instead of leaving the stock rotors on and have even more stopping-power for a non-ABS car. I have, and it has worked wonders for keeping me out of trouble. The slots allow heat, gasses and brake pad dust/powder to escape while under braking and helps to cool the rotor off quickly when your cruising, while shortening overall braking distance by a small margin, and shaves off a couple of pounds of rotating mass, which in turn lessens wear on the wheel bearings and associated components. Just a relatively inexpensive idea, plus I think it makes the car look more aggressive/racetrack-ready while sitting and looking pretty. P.P.S. My father had a buddy named Wayne who would look under the hood at the 944's engine and say... "Mark, I swear, when Porsche designed the intake manifold/throttle body for this car, they were looking at their right hand for inspiration." Ever since then, even though it's not true, I cannot unsee it. The long runners look like fingers with the webbing, the bends look like knuckles, the thumb is where the air comes in and the plenum is the palm. TL;DR If you like tinkering and are mechanically adept and dont mind older cars, this car is a cakewalk compared to a lot of today's cars. If you hate getting dirty, checking fluids or don't want to deal with the manual trans lifestyle, this car is not for you IMO. Sorry. Don't bother with 944's with Trip-tronic Automatic 3-speeds, much heavier, slower and worse gas mileage than a manual variant. Unless you plan on taking the motor out of the auto and replacing your blown motor in your manual, the automatics are mostly parts cars for the manuals.

That little plastic white thing on the water pump is for the 944 turbo, it’s blocked off on NA cars. Since your car is pre 85.5 and has that then yes you are correct. Your water pump has been replaced. Pretty good buyers guide you touched about 98% of normal 944 issues

I've been obsessed with these cars since I saw Aging Wheels work and drive on them. I'm currently looking for a good one, some what like this one to enjoy and do some work on. I wish you the best of luck and will continue the hunt for these lovely little sports coups from the 80's.

Casey, buy that front panel from another 944 and mount the light pod to it - KEEP the existing one and store it somewhere, that way paint will match perfectly and it will be "numbers matching" hahaha! Honestly I like the car without the rally light pod, but I know your keen to put it on - just toss it on a used panel from a donor car. Oh and flat black FTW on the pod!
@lbeckm35 жыл бұрын
Doh - reading the comments and Thomas Magda beat me to the punch on keeping the original panel. There you go Casey, we have quorum so do what Thomas and I tell you too with that panel... ;)

Was looking for info on Porsche 944s and found your interview on VINwiki and then found this and instantly thought, "hm, this guy looks familiar.." so here I am lol. I'm 14 now going to be 15 soon and I'm dreaming of a 944, found a few listings around my town and I'm hoping I can save up and maybe acheive my dream. Also, awesome garage! :P

3k for a 944? How in the world did you find one? They are all going for like high tens - twenties now. Would love one of these as a first car.
@blue-tb2fd2 жыл бұрын
They've gone up the past few years, around me they're not ridiculous though. You can still find a decent high-mileage one a little south of $10k. Might not be the case everywhere though
