Early 80s is vintage now? Reminds me of several years ago my wife and I were listening to an out of town radio station and the DJ goes "...and now it's time for some classic rock!" He proceeded to start play 80s rock and I yelled "THAT'S NOT CLASSIC ROCK, THAT'S MY CHILDHOOD!" To which my wife doubled over and fell to the ground laughing.

When that car came out I worked at an Airport parking center. Private lot where you parked and we shuttled you to the airport. I drove damn near every car when I worked there and had a blast. I had a few friends with a 928 or 944 as well as all th 60s cars. I think I'm in almost the generation where kids cared about cars. I'm 55, and proud that my 19 year old step son loves cars. You're a fun dude Casey, a younger man with an older soul.

I've had my '83 944 for about 3 years, and I love every minute of driving it. I paid about the same for mine, and did all the same maintenance; water pump, timing belt, new rubber and battery... drives like a dream. I also drive mine as a daily unless we're in full snowstorm mode, and it's never let me down. Like you pointed out, treat it well and maintain it, and the 944 is super reliable. I love the latest tech for things like my laptop and phone, but my car is a work of art. It's my enjoyment after a long day at work, or a fun back roads sprint on a Sunday morning. The styling blows away anything from today's selection of cars, and these things were built to last. I'm enjoying your 944 videos, and look forward to seeing more progress on your 928 too.

My ‘83 was my only car when I lived in Crested Butte, CO in ‘95. I was a broke ski bum who traded my ‘87 Isuzu Trooper for it (which I had bought for $700 and fixed up). Was a blast to drive in the mountains and had some epic drives, if a bit white knuckle at times, in bad winter conditions and road trips. I could squeeze my mountain bike or two road trips in the back. Would take it up 4wd only roads to trailheads to go backpacking. So much fun and great memories from that kind of stuff, cross country trips, and autocrossing after moving back to MI. 217,000 miles on it, needs a ton of little stuff but motor runs smooth, doesn’t burn any oil, though has several weeps. I feel I owe the thing some love... and new dampers... haha. I neighbor traded me an ‘86, no sunroof model with 100,000 on it for $500 worth of ski work. It sat in storage for 20 years but he had just put new tires and belts on it. Nice got into the interior the following winter and he didn’t want to deal with it. I cleaned it up and the red leather seats are nearly perfect, just a couple of homes they chewed in the headliner. Was looking for a parts car for my ‘83 but it’s too nice of a driving car. Anyway, I think these things make a bit more modern feeling alternative to some of my classic favorites like the BMW 2002, Long nose 911’s, and other European classics that are fun to drive but not necessarily powerful. Being a guy born in ‘75 the 924 and 944GTR race cars I saw magazine pics of made me drool over the 944. Still think they look so cool with the swoopy box flairs. Anyway, glad seeing a good dose of perspective on these cars and not the usual comparison to modern cars and the relative downfalls in that respect. Sweet spot, classic feeling car.

I love what you say around 14:10 about making the drive home and the drive to work special. I am 22 and have had 18 cars, all of which were manual and fun in some way, from Ford SVTs, to BMWs, to a 924S. I love them all. I relate to that comment so very heavily and tell that to my family all the time when they continue to ask why I always get old sports cars. You truly get it Casey. Keep up the good videos! Love the content. I also relate to driving on 75 a lot, as I am from OH. I have gotten 3 flat tires going to the Detroit Auto show because of low profile tires and poor roads!

I remember those cars my brother's friend had one with a sound system that would make you deaf but it sound great back in 1988. Although the mods he did was an engine swap because the original blew up by the previous owner. The engine he dropped in a grand national turbo V6 with the 4 speed auto. He made it worked & it was fun as a kid going on a joy ride with that loud stereo grabbing me McDonalds so my older bro could go out. While I stayed home & watch T.V. all night on a Friday night. It was my brother's friend who inspired me to be a mechanic. Man your vid brings back memories.

A really nice vid, Casey, you are respecting the car, the past, the motorists sharing the road with you. And your drive recalls for me the new '84 VW GTI which I bought when I was a soldier at the Pentagon. And I liked it, a VW with a Porsche engine or something like that. And when was it that the Yuppie thing became big, with everyone thinking they needed a BMW? Talk about a status symbol, Euro sedans became the pricey way to see the U.S.A.

"I feel like Ferris Bueller right now" got me... I love driving my 83' 944, and it is just an enjoyable car to drive. Definitively not a dragster like you said, and I agree, its really more meant for an enjoyable experience you just don't get with modern cars these days. Especially driving through winding mountain roads.

I had a love/hate with my 944 when it was the first car I bought at 17. Now that I’ve matured a few years I love cruising around in my 944. Comfortable, unique, practical, and a fun drivers car. The things that used to annoy me like the chattery gearbox and long shifter throws remind me of classic race cars when I drive it. Playful amount of power. I upgraded mine with a race chip and throttle cam made a big difference love it.

Thank you Mr Putsch its refreshing to hear you speak with such enthusiasm for older cars that dont pretend to be anything else than what they are. Cars that are easy and pleasurable to drive but have character. Best of all I can understand them carry out maintenance and repairs, the engine bay has room for my fat hands! I've just brought a 1993 Mazda B2200 ute (pick up truck in your language) nothing special 2.2 ltr 4cyl, the only digital feature is a clock, it has wind up windows, armstrong steering bust of all I could sleep in the engine bay. I've been having a great time tidying it up and fixing bits and pieces. Best of all I drive it every day and it's fun. Unfortunately my 18 year old daughter has decided it's cool and she would be far better suited to driving it. I have told her repeatedly NO but after 4 older brothers & sisters I am worn down no doubt once I have it running & driving like its 1993 it will disappear with her behind the wheel. Oh well what father can say no to his baby girl and mean it, theres always another fun project car out there and with grandkids starting to drive in a few years they will need educating about how much fun basic old cars can be plus granddad's definitely cant say no to his grandkids! Best of luck to you Mr Putsch i marvel at your enthusiasm for all things vehicular.

Bought one new in '84 and still own it. Has been such a love affair, have added two more red ones, a white, a ruby, and 2 black. Most have FUCHS, LSD, sport suspension, and all are manuals. Added 3 hard to find models: '88 Jubilee/Celebration and an '86 Sport special with nearly every option including phone, and less than 29,000 miles. The other unique one is an '89 - 951 Club Sport wheeled, factory 300 hp/300 torque Club-sport chipped low miler in Satin Black Met. Casey, as someone with a pair of these (well, 924S's), the "wind noise" biggest issue, oddly, is the seam where the mirrors pivot on their bases (seems such a small thing to cause so much noise). Anyhow, if your car is guards red, get some red electrical tape (it will blend right in), wrap it once around the seam where the mirror folds, and that will eliminate a TON of wind noise. An easy fix nobody ever thinks about.

Long time 944 owner, and I like your review! FYI the MPG gauge isn't a vacuum gauge, it's actually driven by a computer that gets injector pulse time from the ECU and speed from the speedometer, so it is a proper MPG gauge. A bonus fact: the speedometer is analog, driven by a cable, but inside the speedo there's a transducer to send an electric signal out for the MPG gauge. Ah, Germans...

sk8er020389 oh interesting. Yes the 89 is a 2.7L but even if your car is an 88 (at least in the US market) it is a special engine. I learned from a couple of people that were looking at my 88 parts car. The 88 has an updated pcm and a higher compression motor that produces 15-20hp more then earlier base models of the 944.

I had an 85.5 in garnet red with matching interior. Without question one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life, automotive or otherwise, though I wasn't prepared for the cost of maintenance and repairs. Up to that point I had no idea that just driving anywhere, to work say, could be so much fun. When it comes to dumb things, I have a solid entry: I managed to break the hatchback glass when I was about 8 hours from my destination. That was a cool $2000 used to replace.

You can move the tach in the center, depending on the speedo cable has the length. The speedo cable is connected directly to the front wheel and comes up the dash to aign with the right dash location, you may need to disconnect it and reroute it to make it align to the center and not use to much more length...as it's a tad short.

I just bought my first Porsche and it’s a 1986 Carrera 3.2. Love it! I almost bought one of these. I may sell the 911 and buy one. I have a 2004 Z4 BMW I bought for 7 grand. Because of that I feel comfortable driving it everyday. It’s sweet. The 911 makes me nervous because it’s an expensive car. The 944 is an affordable car that looks killer and I wouldn’t have to feel nervous all the time it might get a scratch. Of course, I don’t want any of my cars to get beat up but it’s just more enjoyable to not worry as much. Anyway, great video. Thx

I have an 86 with 27k miles and I love to drive it. So much more involving than my 560hp M6. And no cupholders! Pedals are perfectly placed for heel-toe downshifts. When you nail one perfectly, it’s 10 times better than anything a Tesla will do for you.

I have an '89. I love it. It's a great road car! If you rev it it gets out of its way. Sure a Nissan Altima may have more horsepower but it is hard to put into words how fun it is to drive! And the visibility is the best out of any car I have ever had.

OH, and the styling is still fresh. An 80's 911 looks dated to me. In my 944 I get people giving me thumbs up or asking what is that, so cool! And yes, an LS is always in the future just in case.

The NA cars are very common, but the turbo cars will go up in value. My build: S2 block with piston squirters, 2.7 NA head, 968 crank, 88# injectors, stage 3 vitesse turbo, rogue m-tune, KW v3 all around, PS delete, manual roof, spec mini twin clutch, poly bushings, etc. It puts down about 450wtq.

Just bought a 83 944 with under 60k miles. No rust cali car. I've got a 2016 Cayman and it's a handling beast. So I don't need to create a track car out of it. All I'm doing to the 944 is shocks , tires, headlights and maybe new seats. Mine has basically Rabbit seats. Lol

Casey, I’d love to find one of these and just daily drive it. Maybe not in winter ❄️ here in Canada 🇨🇦 I have been hoping for one cheap even with a blown motor where I’d just swap one in. I did find the exact motor for 800 bucks online and running. Man I lose pop up head lights. Even the older circular one that lay down and point up 👆LoL ❤️

I want to add a quick note on working on it: it's not that difficult. In their day, it was complex and different. Everyone from that generation says they're a pain, I'm 27 and grew up working on 1996 and newer vehicles. So by today's standards the 944 is pretty simple! The only warning I have is "Do Not assume anything!" Figure out how a part works before trying to repair it. The previous owner wrecked the camshaft on my 944 by putting an impact wrench on the cam sprocket hex, instead of removing the recessed bolt in the center and sliding the sprocket off 😬

Enjoyed the video Casey. interesting , engaging, and educational indeed. Being fairly new to the channel, do you have a video on how to drive stick other than that one vid where you teach a subscriber? Would be great if people get an all you lesson with different camera angles of engaging the clutch, up shifts, downshifts, rev matching ect as opposed to the other vid you did that had basics.

Personally, I would recommend caution buying an exhaust for a 944 if you live where there's high speed limits. The drone gave me a headache after about 15s on the Texasbahn, and I'm still (kind of) a youth. Might be a problem with the 3.0Ls, but buyer beware. Luckily, the original was included with the sale, and it made 3800rpm cruising bearable again. Good tires, and a suspension refresh really take the 944 up to 11. Early non-airbag OE steering wheels are pretty cheap and easy to find used, if you want to ditch the momo for that extra early dash feel. Anyway, I bought my S2 just before the market heated up and I just love the transaxles, every drive puts a smile on my face, especially when it rains(LSD means big fun at little speeds). Way more interesting than a Boxster, BRZ, 350Z, or anything else in the price bracket and just as much fun. They must be infectious because my dad bought a 968 two weeks after driving mine, and he hasn't had a German car since he sold his E36 15 years ago. They're really special cars and I hope they stay attainable.

Great video - and I like your life advice too....so....subbed! As it happens I'm starting to noodle around ideas for that special ride. As a guy of reasonable resources I keep coming back to the 944. I was in high school in their heyday and just loved loved loved the shape from day one. And you're right - as the freakin investors and garage queen curators look to feed their unstoppable appetites for driving prices ever upwards (think I just heard the door slam shut on the last of the 912 opportunities), the 944 is still within reach. Just have to get my head around 80s cars being vintage....cuz that means I'M vintage and then some...😵. Looking forward to checking out your other videos.

I finally took ownership of my father-in-law’s 944, but before I drove it 189 miles back home, I had a full maintenance service done at a great independent Porsche service shop in San Luis Obispo. The car now drives like new and is a pleasure to drive. I had the timing belt, balance shaft belt, water pump, all front engine seals replaced (including am and crank seals), spark plugs, alternator, brake lines flushed, auto cooling fan fixed and a bit more. Its a lot of fun!
