Review: Sankyo Super 8 Projector With Groovy Slo-Mo Functions

This unusual Sankyo projector has some features that all film projectors should have had, plus it's built solid and required no repairs on my part. Plus I demonstrate some home movies in Super 8 and Regular 8mm film formats. See Aunt Matilda jump in the swimming pool in reverse! The pink color stems from instability in the dyes where the red dye has proven far more stable over time. The good news is that these seemingly pink films can still be digitally restored (using the digital ROC color correction filter in ICE^3) as the data is still recorded within the film dies, it’s just that the red dye has dominated them. This issue affects quite a lot of vintage color film.

This isn’t that obscure, though, just old. This was actually pretty common back then, my grandpa had a camera and projector (not this one, but also Sankyo) which I’ve now recovered, after more than 30 years of being untouched.

tntgrunf He will in good time, it usually takes an extended slow growth period before things really take off, but at 33K he will likely begun to grow much faster soon. At least right now he gets to have fun doing whatever he enjoys and likes without having to worry about subscriber numbers and other KZbin headaches, and I really enjoy our host’s quirkiness and love of the vintage equipment that many in our age range grew up with.

Excellent review of the Sankyo 2000H! I have this same machine and was able to upgrade the lens to a better Bolex "hifi" from the 1960's. Gives more light and a sharper image. Anyways these are great little running projectors.

Hey man, great video, as always! After I saw this, I searched for the same model and bought one for about $10, seller advertised it as having a bad bulb, when it arrived I found out the contacts were oxidized. A little cleaning and a new belt and it's nearly mint. Thanks for the tip, it's indeed a great projector! The speed 'tuner' is great for digitizing film. If you ever scan that manual, please let me know.

Ahh Marvel Cave! That brings me back. I had family that lived in those parts many years ago. At one time I had seen some 8mm home movies that were shot in the 50's or 60's but I have no idea what ever happened to them.

I had a Sankyo mono AM/FM radio with built-in cassette in the late 70's, but it was made in Korea. It was AC bias. I have a projector that has similar features, but a fixed speed choice selector. I think it's a Kodak from the late 60's (I don't have it handy so I'd have to dig for it a little to tell you the details.) Love the video.

I have three videonow players, one black and white and two color units and a bunch of discs. I'd like to find a way to rip the discs to a video on PC. I've seen tools but they are difficult to use.

My grandmother gave me this same projector when I was 15 years old, I,m 60 and still have it in mint condition and still works, I just had to replace the lamp and all new belts in 1989.

I got a VideoNow Color at a flea market. Tried to make my own disc several times following the instructions and it didn't work. My bell and Howell Super 8 has veritable speed and no way to make sure it's running at standard speed from what I can tell. Wish I had a telecine for my family's home movies, maybe I'll pay for the service some day. I have a vary red film of the moon landing.

hi to all the school i was at had a 16mm projector stereo sound i use to get it out of the AV lock up in the old days you could hire film out there was not alot of good movies you could watch i can tell you i am pleased video came out no more heavy can's to pick up all the time

My Bell & Howell dual-format projector has three full-brightness modes which advance 18, 6, and 2 frames/second, in addition to a still mode which inserts a filter that reduces the brightness when freeze-framing to prevent film damage. Projectors that don't have to do that tend to have much dimmer image than those that do.

I have a few 8mm films of Moms from when I was really young. She had a Bell & Howell projector and the matching film camera. The bulb burned out in the projector years ago and I have never tried to see if I could replace it(guess I could check Amazon or eBay). The bulb kinda resembles a vacuum tube. I'm not even sure if she even owns the projector anymore. Would be interesting to see what's on those reels.

The reason why slow motion, still, and dual format projection wasn't more popular was that the projectors that had these options tended to cause more wear on the film. So they were not popular with those who didn't specifically had these needs. It was difficult to make a projector within reasonable price that could change between formats and do slow motion if it should have sprockets. Therefore the sprockets were replaced with rollers or springs so the claw was the only thing that drove the film from reel to reel. This caused a big strain on the one perforation hole that the claw was pulling on compared to the classical projector with sprockets where the claw should only pull the film through the film gate. Also the sprocket-less design had problems with some of the self-threading reels because the film got harder to pull off the reel at the last couple of minutes.

Looks similar to mine. But mine might be newer and has a tan plastic case. I also have a Sankyo 8mm film camera as well. It records sound so it's a Super 8 I believe. I have a video on my channel from 1976 or 77. during a family reunion. I was a little kid of about 6 or 7. I'm in the video. I had all the family filmes transferred to VHS and DVD around 2002 and 3006

the sankyo's are very good!! as japanese projectors are. i myself have some austrian Eumig's they have more slomo features (Mark 610D) and are also built like a tank.

Sonn kyo say key How did you make your own Video Now disc? Interested to know. Wolverine Data makes 8mm film scanners but they cost a lot. Worth it if you can make money using it or just have lots of 8mm or Super 8 film. Just need to capture the audio separately and merge later in digital editing and post.

we also had a projector of this brand, not that advanced as this one though, my father filmed with a QUARTZ, a russian wind film camera, he had to do the lighting measurements with a seperate light meter, there where more 8mm formats, single8 super8, and double8, double8 was a reel you could "turn", so it had perforation on both sides (16mm?) which was sliced as it came back from the developer at the photo store, with super8, the reels were stacked in the cartridge, single8 had them next to each other, so there where different sizes of 8mm film cameras. the projectors sometimes had a switched mains outlet, so when switching off the projector a connected lamp came on, so one could see what one was doing, or to switch on the main lighting on, (finding the switch...) Viewing slides was also a main event in families houses, this was the first media in color, the slide machines where more automated, and could be synced with other equipment, soundless movie projectors could be synced with tape reel recorders. Thank you, for your posts ! they bring back memories ! how these things are now easy with the new technology :)

Double-8 was regular 8. They took 16MM film, double perforated it and it was split during processing and spliced to make 8MM strips. Super-8 was a single band of film that fed from one reel to another right beside it. The cartridge handled film pressure duty and was sometimes not good at it. Single-8 was Fuji's response to Super-8. They used polyester instead of acetate, resulting in a thinner, tougher, (16MM rental films were later often printed on polyester to make them more durable) more flexible, film. The cartridge was a different design the relied less on the cartridge for film handling and let the camera itself control everything. They also used top and bottom reels instead of the side-by-side Super-8 arrangement, allowing the cameras to be thinner.

Pro tip: in Japanese the vowel combination "ei" is pronounced "ay" (rhymes with "say", "bay", etc.); it's one of the few Japanese diphthongs. So "Seiki" would be pronounced "Say-kee".

I find them problematic because the rubber on the drive mechanism hardens over time so the motor starts slipping. I prefer Bauer and Silma if it has to be European.

They were made but were pretty rare. I think Sankyo make a couple and Eumig made a few, starting in the early 70s. Stay away from Kodak.

I have a Kodak standard 8 and it does ok, its basic as. its the only one i have that plays the home movies of the time. all the duals don't seem to like the film.

I was speaking of the Kodak sound projectors of the 70s, not the earlier Regular-8 models from the 30'-60s although Kodak did offer a nice Regular-8 sound model in the early 60s. They also pioneered magnetic sound in 16MM projectors in 1951 and offered models with that feature until the end of American production (1981), when they started selling rebadged Japanese (Elmo) projectors.

Sankyo is nothing to do with Sanyo. They're still around but are called Nidec Sankyo these days, making precision motors for things like hard-drives, 3D printers, robotics, etc. Some of these projectors would automatically dim the bulb in freeze-frame or slow-mo to avoid burning the film.

Sankyo was a major supplier of motors for cassette recorders, cameras, and other small uses from the 60s on.. You could also find them in Teac floppy drives. As you note, they are still supplying them today.

Plus Grandmother put, a hankie on, my head and I, thought that was, funny Plus I was, in the pool, sitting in the pool floats. After, that my Family, went to Town to get some Groceries from The store. Then, my Family went, to the ice cream Shop, to get ice cream And, time for bed.
