Review - Space Marines: Assault Intercessors + Paints Set

Today I take a look at the new Space Marines: Assault Intercessors + Paints Set from Games Workshop. Apologies for the out of focus camera throughout, this was originally going to be a painting tutorial but I forgot to turn off the auto focus. Decided to salvage what I could as best I could without re-shooting.

Welcome to the hobby and yes I agree it's hard to identify the true size of the figures from the website. I laughed the first time I saw a Tau Hammer Head in person, so tiny.

@@JimsTableTopWargaming Very. And it was such a economical buy. 6 pots of paint is approximately 42/50$ and I've already bought an assault intercessor squad for 25.99$ and that had no paint.

Given that the eyes are recessed into the surrounding helmet, it might be possible to get a decent look on them even if using the kit supplied starter brush. Paint the eyes first, obviously the size of the brushes tip almost guarantees paint will overlap onto the surrounding helmets surface but that's not a big deal. Once the eyes are dry, carefully paint around the eyes on the raised up surfaces and the rest of the helmet. It should be easier to do that way as opposed to the more traditional eye lenses last with a detail brush. Just my two cents. Thanks for the video. 👍

I appreciate your feedback, it's a great comment and will likely be helpful to others starting this kit. I did consider the eyes in terms of mixing a series of light grey paints and overlapping them to create the usual lense effect, wasn't sure how that would turn out with the brush size. Your suggested method would have allowed me to make corrections which I had not considered. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for sharing your advice.

Thanks for the review! Was wondering about the value of grabbing this box vs a model kit + individual paints. In Canada, it's about $4 cheaper than a Space Wolves pack with 10 models.

I believe the starter brushes are synthetic, whereas the normal brushes by GW's are natural hair fibres.

Correct, although only the artificer brushes are pure sable. The rest are a mix of both. Starter brushes are entirely synthetic.

So the included shade paint shouldny be used as nurn oil?

You can use the included shade paint as a substitute if you do not have nuln oil in your collection. If you check out the tutorial I did for this kit you can see the results and decide for yourself. I hope this helps

I agree, more variety and choice is always appreciated. I know people who would buy them if they did a Tyranid one for instance as humanoid models do not interest them.

It's too much money for too little, at least in my opinion. GW used to offer a lot more bang for your buck with these back in the nineties.

I can agree that the amount of paint included is not exactly ideal, I would have liked to see more variety or the exact paints that GW recommends for Ultramarines. But I still think that this kit has value to someone coming in to the hobby for the first time as it's less of an investment, especially if you find it discounted elsewhere.
