2. How does Penelope’s portrayal differ from the traditional portrayal of Odysseus? What do you think of Odysseus? 4. What does she have to say about the “official version” of what happened? Great review! The Handmaid's Tale is the novel I am most familiar with by Atwood (like most people), but it sounds like this novel follows common themes regarding injustices in society, primarily regarding gender, and placing them in uncomfortable situations. I remember a scene in The Handmaid's Tale movie (which we watched in our Postmodernism class) that was quite uneasy, but with that particular idea, it did bring its point across. -Josh

This is a really well thought out review! 😀 I just read this last week in physical form and the parts with the maid chorus fell flat for me. It sounds like listening to the audiobook is the way to go. I still enjoyed the book overall though.

Great review :) Atwood is one of my most read authors but I haven't gotten around to the Penelopiad! Sounds really interesting and also kind of different from her other works. My favourites of hers are the Robber Bride, The Blind Assassin, and Oryx and Crake(but then I hated the sequels in this series). I have never been able to get into audio books but maybe for this one I will try it out!

KZbin has a video of Atwood reading "Our Cat Enters Heaven" I bet you can find it. I loved several of her books but never finished a couple, including The Penelopiad . I wondered why I liked her books so much when I read almost no mainstream fiction but she explained in one of her talks that most of her immediate family are scientists (so maybe she uses similar intuition as a scientist?)
