Reviewed: Suzuki Burgman Street 125 EX scooter

Suzuki's Burgman scooter range has been around since 1998.
Celebrating it's 25 year anniversary, Suzuki has introduced one of the most affordable and economical bikes to wear the Burgman badge - the Street 125 EX.
Does it live up to the Burgman name? Insidebikes' Mikko Nieminen hit the roads of Cambridge to find out.

Looks like a great little scoot. The PCX has had the stop-start system for years already and has 15" wheels to for more comfort. On the other hand 12" tyres will be cheaper to replace, and I think the Burgman has a bigger storage space. I've got the 400 and it's been super reliable, I've only had to replace 1x headlamp bulb in 2 years of ownership.

No need for a start & start system on any vehicle & totally irreverent & unnecessary on a 125 twist & rip scoot where fuel consumption is negligible at any time . The start & stop system is tech gimmick for the sake of it, the most wear on an engine is at start up ,so it can’t be good for the engine & only more unnecessary expense to sort if & when it goes wrong . When it comes to 125 scoots ,unless it’s a maxi type , it makes more sense to go for the cheapest reliable well known make ,to nip about the city ,town or suburbia , the smaller wheels & flat floor make for easier slicing & dicing busy traffic & extra load space . The Suzuki Street looks ideal for that kind of job .

Seeing these videos make me realise how competitive India has become in manufacturing compared to west. The same Suzuki Burgman 125 with all the bells and whistles is available in India at £1100 and still it does not sell well in India because rival Indian 2-wheeler manufacturers like TVS can provide a similar scooter with better build quality at less than £1000 (TVS Jupiter 125). Recently, TVS has started its journey into Europe as well.

£3000 is quite a price. In my country it's only £1350, quite cheap as an imported vehicle from India. And last October it was just launched in Indonesia. But for the appearance of the design, it may take some time for us to accept it because it is less familiar.

1. Does Burgman start after it stands in rain for a night, as mine will be in open garage. 2. My office is in water logged area where bike and scooter exhausts sink in flood, how to start Burgman after that?

What about breaks? As far as I know no ABS system which I see as a must at least on front. Rear brake is also not a disc and a drum. Does it have combine braking system. Engine power is almost %50 less than PCX 125. PCX has a front disc ABS, lower seat height, liquid cooled motor and lower consumption. Therefore Suzuki has a competitive challenge against PCX.

@@Mr.Ozgr07 It's a feature which lets u connect ur mobile phone to the scooter. once ur connected you can monitor your milage see the map get notifications in the scooter and etc

Myself have a burgman 125. So far the ride is comfortable. But looks like self start button problem starts in a few months. Both mine and another friend of mine are now facing this problem.

It’s not all about horse power , one of my bikes is a 2004 Honda 125 Innova 9•3 hp it does the same top speed as a lot of 12hp twist & rip auto scooters .

@@maskedavenger2578 true enough but with most people a scooters top speed is pretty irrelevant it's how they last and how they pick up speed in an urban environment. I guess it would have been nice to see another NMAX / PCX competitor where this looks to be more of a Honda vision competitor but for more money.

@@BikingChap It was like a lot of Suzukis meant for markets like the Indian market ,where fuel consumption & price point & ease of self maintenance is more important . They even find the price of budget Suzukis too expensive compared to the local Bajaj scooters . I have a Suzuki V strom 250 cc DE. twin cylinder motorcycle , that was originally meant for sale in India & similar markets . It didn’t sell in India as it was seen as too expensive although it was made in China & budget priced . It didn’t sell well in the U.K. as it’s only 25 Hp & the A2 licence allows almost twice the horsepower . To sell in India the new V strom 250 cc had to be oil cooled & a single & sold even cheaper . Suzuki sold the standard 125 Burgman in the which like the PCX was more of a step over maxi type scoot with about 12hp . This Burgman street is a smaller step thru flat board town & suburban scoot ,with no frills. I don’t see the point of stop & start especially on a 125 scoots where the fuel consumption is negligible anyway ,it just more tech to potentially go wrong & cause more expense to fix when it does. Also the most wear on an engine is on start up, so it can’t be good to have an engine stopping & starting every few seconds or minutes. The Yam max is more of a rival for the PCX . I have a 2000 reg Malaguti 125 Madison maxi scoot ,which has a version of the Yam majesty 125 engine ,it’s off the road at present needing new chrome forks , it was only 12•2 hp & a2 valve head ,it has a better top end than any most modern 125 cc scooters & handles like a Ducati race bike . The Suzuki street like all Suzukis should be reliable & better than good value for money & well capable of doing what it’s designed to do .

@@maskedavenger2578 yep, fair points. I've gone with a PCX after much deliberation. I have to say i prefer the better spec'ed NMAX but the NMAX just had to may stories of engine wear and, frankly, the Honda dealer has been excellent in the past and the local Yamaha dealer doesn't have the best reputation. That swung it in the end.

@@BikingChap I service all my own bikes or scooters large or small capacity . I have mostly owned Honda or Suzukis & never had one break down in over 50 years of motorcycling ,no matter which country they were manufactured . The PCX has a good rep & is reported to be great on the fuel ,I believe you can switch the stop & go gubbins off. People have also toured all over Europe & the Alps on them ,so make good small capacity tourers . Enjoy your scooter 👍

So, spirited riding gets you 112mpg. With a 5.5 litre tank that’s a range of 135 miles. That’s where the extra £600 is worth it on the pcx125, an 8.1 litre more efficient engine gives you a range of 200 miles, and there’s extra space under the seat, and keyless system. 135 miles is more than perfectly adequate for a twist & rip town & suburban flat foot board auto scooter , it’s not as if there is a big shortage of petrol stations in the U.K. .

Of a staggering ugliness!... the new Burgman Street is designed for Asian templates , If you measure more than 1.75m , you will look stupid , terribly uncomfortable !... !... What happened to the engineers who designed the new Burgman? ... Suzuki has abandoned all the assets that had made the success of its prestigious cousin ... round and warm shapes, a trunk with a very large storage capacity ...a nervous and economical engine ...then declined in 200cc!... The new model of the Burgman is a historical error!...

This scooter is made in India, design in India. What you expect. Not everybody taller than 175 in India. People who are taller goes for 250cc
