Hi Superblomper! One of my favourite books I read in 2022 seems right up your alley, and we seem to have pretty similar tastes for dark and twisted stuff. It’s called Palaces by Simon Jacobs. It is a short little book. It is about a young punk couple who leave their town and end up in a city in full apocalypse-style riot. From there they take a train into a town of deserted mansions. That’s pretty much all I can say about the book without giving too much away, but I will say that I have seen some folks have wildly different interpretations of the story than I did upon finishing.

@@superblomper I was pumped for String Follow after Palaces. It was my most anticipated book and preordered it immediately. I liked it, it ended up being 3.5 star read for me. Splattery, punk, angsty suburban teenagers, supernatural elements...it had all the ingredients but Palaces just set the bar so high.

glad to see someone w/ a similar take on maeve fly. i wanted to like it so bad!!! i've also worked at the disney parks on both coasts (part of why i was so looking forward to it) & it became a little too tough to suspend disbelief, i had to bow out after (spoilers ahead for ppl looking to check it out) the protag dunked on her coordinator for...not wanting her to snort coke while on the clock at a children's theme park? not sure what else she expected to happen in that scenario lol just felt like a very silly brand of edginess ty for all the recs!! excited to try a bunch of these, especially the horror picks

Yeah Maeve Fly was disappointing! Omg having experience working at Disney must've given you such a unique perspective during your read. I imagine it's similar to when I read science fiction and struggle to suspend my disbelief about the egregiously incorrect science details lol Hope you like the recs you end up reading!!! I'm so glad! This year I've definitely been revisiting old manga titles from my preteen years & it's been so lovely (ᴗ ͜ʖ ᴗ) when I was a teenager, my old library only allowed me to check out 100 books at once and I'd check out 100 volumes of various manga series and my friend and I would just sit in her bedroom reading together all weekend ♡ so nostalgic! !!
