The Hike is unlike anything I've ever read, and has one of my favorite endings of all time. Also liked Little Eyes, and I think most of these are on my TBR--except for In Praise of the Stepmother. I've never heard of it until now but that quote you shared! Gonna see if I can find a copy. :)

Going to physical bookshops to buy this kind of lit it's a humbling (and funny)experience fr. As soon as I told this very nice old man the title I was looking for,he looked at me in an unreadable way and went into a 5 min speech about how he knew the author and hadn't been able to finish another book of his.Very disturbing,he kept saying,VERY. After he handed me the bag he said ,very dramatically: "let me know if you make it,good luck",as if I was going to war or something.Bless him 😂

Tampa: "When her head swiveled my way I could almost hear the grinding sound of a long standing boulder being moved." Tampa, The First Bad Man, Hawk Mountain, Little Eyes, Garden......I'm sure there are more books you've recommended that I've read and now and I am in need of therapy 5 days a week.. ...but in a good way. I just finished The First Day of Spring (Nancy Tucker) which was 5 stars and I'm currently reading My Husband (Maud Ventura).Great so far . You are the best.

Best book: I've read a number of great books this year so I'll go with Julia (Sandra Newman) since I have mentioned Strange Sally Diamond (Liz Nugent). I'm up to vol6 of Asadora. Wild ride. I can't find Utsubora: The Story of a Novelist (Asumiko Nakamura) out in the wild. Bonding (Maggie Siebert) will be read when I finish Wounds: Six Stories from the Border of Hell (Nathan Ballingrud). Loved Tampa (Alissa Nutting) and Swanna in Love (Jennifer Belle). Same comedic insanity. Love the channel.

Why is The Weird and the Eery called an essay instead of a book?

it's both! essays are usually just shorter books and are pretty much just the author providing their opinions on a particular topic.

On the note of trying to get into short stories, idk if you've read it, but Mouthful of Birds by Samanta Schweblin is what really unlocked the world of short stories for me, and it seems like the kind of weird, eerie stuff that you might also like, so I highly recommend it!

!queen: "People Spiraling". The Bee Sting (Paul Murray). I turned over a a few tables when this title didn't win The Booker Prize. Birnam Wood (Eleanor Catton). Short stories: Penguin Classics: Songs of a Dead Dreamer and Grimscribe (Thomas Ligotti). Currently reading: Grey Dog (Elliott Gish) and Edifice Complex (Michaël Wertenberg). More spiraling. Always great to see new content.

i can relate to people spiraling lol i've seen the bee sting floating around, but hadn't really considered it. i will now though, thanks! aaah i still gotta get to birnam wood too. i saw it at the bookstore, but the first page didn't grab me. i'm still gonna give it a shot, though. i'll definitely consider ligotti's short stories if i like the conspiracy against the human race. i feel like i'm obligated to read at least some of his horror fiction in order to maintain my card-carrying horror girly status.
