Reviewing every Tom Holland Spider-Man movie has been something I've eagerly awaited for this entire Spidey-cember!
Join me on this Spidey-cember as I Totally Not Mark embark on a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Reviewing and reconnecting with the films that sculpted my childhood and young adult life. This week we are tackling director John Watt's Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man as he appears in Captain America: Civil War all the way through the Home Trilogy, culminating with Spider-Man: No Way Home. Do I still not like them? Will they surprise me? Let's see!

Hey Mark, with this year, 2022, being Spider-Man’s 60th Anniversary, how about reviewing Spider-Man comics? Here’s are some suggestions: - Ultimate Spider-Man By Brian Michael Bendis - Amazing Spider-Man By J. Not really... Homecoming: he wants more but can't deal with it and learns to do it.. with the help of his friends and idol. Far from home: he wants acception and losses it but for a great cost.. with the help of his friends and guidance of his idol No way home: he doesn't accept fate and miraculously change it with the help of his loved ones and of himself... Literally! Two versions to be exact! And learns that things needs to change and now he lives alone but not for long I guess... What I really interested in this version of Tom is that he isn't alone, he has support in opposite of Tobey. Garfield had Gwen but.. y'know...

One of my favorite exchanges from NWH that I haven't seen a lot of people mention is after Tom's cured Norman and Andrew comes up and says "Nice catch." And Tom responds "Nice throw." On a meta level, it's Andrew complimenting Tom's version of Spidey picking up the franchise after Amazing 2 under-performed, and Tom turns it back and tells Andrew that no matter how that last movie was received, Andrew's Spidey was still a worthy predecessor.

46:07 That scene is even better when you realize that Willem DaFoe refused to do the movie unless he was allowed to do his own stunts. So when Goblin power drives Spider-man through the floor that is really Willem Dafoe power driving Tom Holland through the floor. That knowledge makes every hit land so much harder, especially in the final battle.

He must have had a stunt double for at least some shots though because when I saw NWH in theaters a third time this past weekend there was someone credited as Willem Dafoe's stunt double (I forget the name of the guy)... Willem is one of my all time favourite actors. Not only because he's just naturally talented at acting, but also because I just love his attitude. More than seeing it as a job, he sees it as a way of helping a director realise their creative vision and bring it to life. He fully dedicates himself to his roles and isn't afraid to step out of his comfort zone and learn entirely new things. There was one movie he did where he plays a painter, and he previously had almost no knowledge of the art form. He had to learn for the movie. I really admire that kind of passion.

I always liked this version of Spiderman, he was refreshing and fun, realistic in motivation being a child and making dumb decisions that affected him in the long run. And it was perfectly clear, if not easily recognisable, that this Parker wasn't ready for the responsibilities of being Spiderman. That's why people reacted negatively to his portrayal. He wasn't Spiderman yet, he was a young boy trying to be Iron Man, someone he isn't. His 3 films took him through a journey of self discovery, confronting him with the reality of who he is and what his choices in life has lead him to. He grew up and became a hero by self discovery, literally facing 2 versions of himself where he either loses touch with Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) or a Peter Parker that reluctantly becomes Spiderman because he has that responsibility (Tobey Maguire). Both have dark tendencies, discussed on the rooftop, both going in different directions. Holland's Spiderman is the culmination of these struggles and how he realises that "with great power, comes great responsibility" He became Spiderman, because thats who he was meant to be, and his struggles and falls from grace come from, what Dr Strange says, "his desire to live have 2 seperate lives"

"Because that's who he was meant to be," while it's true every alternative version of peter in the multiverse was basically chosen to be Spider-Man, the appeal of Spider-Man was that he was never supposed to be. Think "It could have bit anyone it just happened to be me." The lesson isn't "live up to fate" it's "you have the responsibility, now go use it." If we did good things only because it's our nature (fate) and not because it's right it looses the everyman factor and it's more about a dude who is good. Not a good character to teach people about responsibility.

One of the things that I'm upset took me so long to realize is the detail that MCU Spider-man has on it's background. A lot of people credit the Raimi films for making New York it's own character and wishing that MCU Spider-man films did the same. However, I realize that they did that very thing....but with his school. His classmates, school setting, and general vibe of being a teenager all feels so rooted in his films. We know a lot of his classmates, we grew up with them. The other versions of Spider-man made his High School life feel like a jumping off point, an obstacle to get rid of as soon as his hero journey began. MCU Spider-man kinda embraces it and makes his school a character with all of the colorful people. It just makes me love it even more.

EXACTLY. as a sixteen years old watching homecoming for the first time i was SO in love with the way they captured the teenage aspect of Peter's character and his school life, it felt SO genuine, so freaking real. Tobey's movies jumped out of highschool very quick, and even when it was about school it felt unrealistic, almost like a caricature. Andrew's school was okay but again there was so little of it, plus all the characters from the highschool felt way too old to be there. But Tom's school is one of the hearts of his films. His movies were the first Spiderman movies I've seen, and I've watched them while binge watching MCU, and man was he a breeze of fresh air, after all these adult characters, finally a younger, naive soul being at the center of events. Looking at that kid, i feel like the term "Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman" was literally written about him. While Tobey's and Andrew's spideys are the main superheroes of their universes, Tom's universe already _has_ its heroes, who already explored so many aspects of superheroes, to the point that Tom now doesn't need to be that. instead he can be a _teenage_ superhero, a relatable kid with his own, smaller life, the Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman. and that's why i think Tom's franchise works PERFECT for what it needs to be - a Spiderman *in the MCU* .

"When you the things that I can do, but you don't, and then the bad things happen, they happen because of you." I like to think that this line affected Tony in endgame, as strange reminds him of the chances, and if he didn't act like he did in the movie, they could've gone back to square one or maybe even worse. Tony didn't risk to go for the stones because he should've, it's because he COULD'VE.

This is a really cool way of thinking about that scene. I'm 100% that line affected him because he already thought the same when he picked up Spider-Man (the crux of the Accords). Not sure if that specific line went through his head but that same line of thought certainly did. It's likely line was at least part of the reasons he gave up everything for the stones.

After No Way Home, I think Tom Holland's my favorite live-action Spider-Man. His relationship with Tony Stark is a positive that I never understood the hate for. Spider-Man has always had mentors he's looked up. Since we know so much about Iron Man, having Tony introduce him works well for both characters. And the fact that in every Spider-Man move they made sure to showcase Peter relying on his abilities, powers and judgement versus Stark Tech really drove home the point that no matter what suit he wore or what tech he has, he'll get the job done the best way he knows how. I appreciate everything Tobey McGuire and Andrew Garfield brought to the table and I really do want to see Andrew Garfield get a better script for his rumored 3rd film, but I was never as excited for the future of Spider-Man with Garfield and McGuire the way I was when Mysterio revealed his identity and Dr. Strange erased his identity from the world. Being attached to the MCU has been a massive improvement for the character because he's always been in a world where other heroes exist, and in the midst of that he's still unique. Sony and Marvel can do anything with the character now and I'm looking forward to what comes next.

It's a good movie, just not a good Spider-Man movie, can't bring myself to like a movie where Peter stops being Spider-Man just to spend time with his lover, that's literally the opposite of responsibility. Also hate how leniant and ok aunt May is about Peter being Spider-Man, she uses him to benefit her and she even packs his suit for him, aunt May finding out Peter is Spidey is a monumental and dramatic moment in the character's lore and in the MCU they play it for laughs, it's just terrible.

@@pats3212 Ya know that's what happens in Raimi's Spider-Man 2 right? Peter stops being Spiderman to focus on his personal life. Granted, the two situations are different, but it's consequentially the same thing where both are taking breaks from their "resonsibility". If anything, Peter struggling with responsibility is exactly what makes it a good Spider-Man story. It shows that he's flawed and just your average teenager underneath the mask. It's part of what makes them relatable and human. In the case of Spider-Man 2 he wants to let go of Spider-Man and focus on Peter Parker, while in Far From Home he basically wants to take time to enjoy being himself (a very reasonable and relatable motive imo). I'll agree that they could have handled Aunt May better in the MCU, but I don't fault them too hard for it since it just wasn't part of the story that they wanted to tell.

Despite growing up with Tobey, Tom has always been my favorite live-action Spider-man, due in no small part to when they came out. I was just starting High School when Homecoming was released and I saw No Way Home right after my first semester of college. Seeing this Peter starts out with so much energy and confidence, seemingly so sure about what he wants to do in life at such a young age. "I am so far beyond High School, right now." How many of us felt like this before? Felt so certain with what we wanted to do with our lives that we just wanted to skip over the rest of High School? But with each movie, Peter makes mistake after mistake causing harm to not only himself but those around him. We see Peter's confidence torn to the ground as anxiety and self-doubt flood his mind. He no longer wants to be an Avenger, he's not even sure if he can be Spider-man. And in that dark place of self-deprecation and inability to see his own self-worth, he makes his greatest mistake yet and gives EDITH to Mysterio. And every event culminates in No Way Home so perfectly. Peter sees his life as broken beyond repair and so he desperately wants his life to go back to the way it was. He denies any form of change and wishes everything to go back to a simpler time when he was younger. There's a reason why he went to Strange first instead of the more practical solution of talking to MIT directly, beyond 'he forgot'. He subconsciously wanted everything to go back to the way it was. How many of us have wished for everything to revert back to a simpler-more nostalgic- time, ESPECIALLY in our first years of college when we were expecting the biggest changes in our lives. Peter's clinging to the past backfires on him spectacularly. He quite literally loses everything about his old life and is forced to start over with a clean slate. But in the end, he accepts the change and swings off into a new chapter in his life. Seeing Peter's journey into adulthood was amazing. Homecoming taught him to value what he has at the moment. Far From Home to never let his insecurities get in the way of doing what's right by others and by himself. And No Way Home taught him to embrace change. As a teenager suffering through High School with ADHD and depression, seeing a high-energy and talkative Spider-man struggle with their own self-doubts and making actual genuine mistakes that impacted him and his loved ones, that was just so much more intensely relatable than anything else I've ever seen in a Superhero movie.

Something I personally loved about No Way Home is how it dealt with comparing the Spider-Men to each other. Specifically in the scene where they're directly comparing their achievements to each other. In response to hearing Tobey and Tom's grand adventures, Andrew starts to think less of himself. He thinks he's lame. To which Tobey immediately responds by basically telling him to shut up and stop being so hard on himself. And that's what this movie was trying to say to the viewers when all of them were on screen together. It's them saying it doesn't matter. Whether you liked one over the other doesn't objectively mean the other is bad. They're all great. They're all heroes. They're all "Amazing". *Wink*

One thing that upsets me about the "Iron Boy Jr." claims is that Peter's journey is all about growing on his own. The complaint that he uses Stark tech is strange to me. Imagine a story of a blacksmith and his apprentice. The blacksmith made himself famous by crafting weapons, until he was forced to craft weapons for his enemies. So, he crafts a suit of armor to defy them and later to protect and fight for the innocent. Over the years, he faces many challenges and ups and downs because of his forging skills. Eventually, he meets a young boy looking to prove himself, so he takes him under his wing, teaching him and granting the apprentice a suit of his own. The boy wishes to be like the blacksmith, but his skills differ greatly. After the blacksmith gives his life for the good of all, the young apprentice is left with the forge of his late teacher. He comes learn an important lesson about making his own weapons and does just that, using the forge left for him by his teacher. With it, he crafts his own armor and weapons to carry on the good fight. When Peter makes a suit in Far From Home, he doesn't make an Iron Man suit or even an Iron-Spider suit. He makes a Spider-Man suit! He defeats Beck with his Spidey Sense. He literally destroys Stark’s drones. The movie could not make it more clear that Peter is not Iron Boy Jr.. I find it upsetting that people don't consider that.

The idea of Spider-Man being taken under Ironman’s “wing” is exactly the issue. Peter does not need iron man or anyone for that matter. Anyone that has read the comics know that this has been the case from the beginning. Peter making his own suit and web shooters shows his resourcefulness and intelligence. Having everything be given to him by others is ridiculous. It’s more in tune with Miles’s chracter than Peter. You give a hypothetical, fantasy like story, but u don’t need to imagine a story like that for Spider-Man. I already have a story that showcases how his chracter is supposed to be, it’s the comic.

@@kai_824 I literally didn't call you toxic read my comment again, I said people who liked these movies called anyone who didn't like them toxic, raimi movies are held in a pedestal by everyone they're effectively the gold standard of Spiderman in possibly anything from cinematography to writing, there's a good reason why Martin Scorsese thought these movies were good while not particularly liking new marvel movies, it's what he wants from Spiderman because it's what defines Spiderman, his humanity and struggles makes him standout from the average superheros, this is how Spiderman was written in the comic and the argument that it doesn't work in the universe is also false since spidey has existed with other supes as long as he was created and was still like that, despite the supposedly slower development it doesn't actually develope him any further than what raimi did in like 20 minutes

Thanks for highlighting mostly the positives and more specifically the different narratives of each version. I feel it sheds light on how you can portray a character in various ways and still have it be effective. Even in the often criticized or lesser movies there still is an important element of Peter’s story present.

Tom Holland is my favourite version of Spider-Man, even way before No Way Home. I love the journey he goes on through the MCU, seeing him grow and his journey into adulthood and seeing the issues that we can relate to like wanting to impress those we look up to, wanting to rid ourselves of some heavy responsibility but eventually accepting it or learning the true cost for said responsibility. His journey through the MCU was handled really well and with it essentially serving as one big origin story it felt unique and felt satisfying. From him choosing to do the right thing while sacrificing what he wants, to accepting that the people he looks up to are not perfect and to him becoming his own person and starting a new, this version of Spider-Man made reminded me of what I have gone through in my life and made me love these films even more.

This is a great review that is fair and honest about these movies. Way better than Hitopfilms reviews, because all he did was complain about the "Ironboy Jr", the CGI doesnt look good like the raimi movies, it's not Tobey Maguire, there are no consequences, and other stuff. This video gives a fair review of the movies itself while addressing the good and bad.

These have been awesome, great work! The one thing that stood out to me was your criticism of Uncle Ben not saying 'with great power... etc' in TASM, and glad that it came back in No Way Home. I personally prefer that Ben didn't say it, as in the original comics, Ben never said this to Peter, the narrator said he had learned that lesson by what had happened. I think that's more powerful than having someone say it to him. It always struck me as a little on the nose that its said to him for the first time right before he makes that fatal mistake, ignoring it. It becomes more of a 'if you only listened' lesson than something he discovers through his lack of action.

Really well said. I really enjoyed Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and I’m glad that it was different from his more humble origins. I liked that he was iron-man jr and I’m also glad he was beaten down over the last 3+ films and lost everything that we saw him have previously. It’s a great story for this Spider-Man and I don’t think we could have done this story without seeing Toby’s and Andrew’s renditions first. They gave us something to expect and Tom’s version was able to turn that on its head until it all came back to the core themes in end of the last film. Good stuff

I completely agree on Dafoe's Osborn/Green Goblin in NWH, I think it's absolutely fantastic and builds on the previous work magnificently. That's not to say anything negative about his Green Goblin in the first Raimi film (and indeed, this portrayal wouldn't carry the same weight without that groundwork to build upon), but in NWH he feels at his "most Green Goblin" to me. He feels like a true threat, unpredictable, manic, menacing, and I think it's especially impressive that in a single movie where he's sharing the spotlight with so many others, he still comes out having made a huge impact as a true nemesis for Spider-Man as a whole.
