PoE1 is already over 10 years old. At some point you have to just make a new game instead of putting all your resources into an aging game. Frankly, I find PoE2 more fun than PoE1 at this point, although they clearly need to do more work on the endgame. It's hard for me to stay interested in PoE1 for more than a week at a time after more than a decade of playing it. Change can be good. I mostly like the direction PoE2 is going, although I liked the feeling of the campaign more than the mapping.

I just really hope now that PoE2 is finally 'out' they can get back to a proper schedule for PoE1. I think PoE2 will be a good game at some point, same as PoE1 it's simply that you can't make a game this big actually good without large scale feedback and that takes some time.

I'm playing 2 because I want it to be different from poe1. I've been playing poe1 since 2014 and while I still play almost every league (wtf was that ancestor league), I don't always end up playing more than one or two characters through red maps and end game bosses. This is primarily due to a lack of new ascendancies, new skills, new interactions that don't just feel like more of the same with a new coat of paint. I like the game, but I've already played wardloop, tornado shot, slam skills... My point being that I have a lot of builds I like playing, but I initially got sucked in because I was so wrapped up in making new builds. To me, them saying poe2 will be separate from poe1 sounded like 'we're making a new game you can play between leagues'. A new game sounds like new builds to me. A new game with a different passive skill tree, different ascendancies, different skills, and different end game goals sounds like something I want to explore. My hope is that exploring the second game will give me more inspiration to find new builds to play in poe1. Plus, I would love a lot of these new poe2 features like the wasd, new animations, new starter characters, and new weapon types added in poe1.

RE: There is no POE2 logo for the game on standalone. Experienced the same. One more indicator (of the many) that this was a hot potato release/is the "Early" in Early Access, because the executable (.exe) has a POE2 logo. Thus, go into the POE2 installation folder, make a shortcut of the executable, move the executable to the Desktop.

POE1 has been stale for years now IMO. If it's a good league, great I play for a week or two, but really, it's exactly the same thing I did 3 months earlier with 5% extra added (which most day 1 league start I don't even get to interact with because of XYZ. It's just the same old campaign grind). If it's a shitty league, well welp, I find another game to play. I get people don't like change, and I'm not saying POE2 is perfect by any means, but most people don't like playing the exact same thing for 10 years (I get it if you do, but you're the exception, not the rule). The new campaign, and character classes, art, among many other things, have reinvigorated my enjoyment of path. And the game isn't even half done! I can't wait for the first league, let alone the other 3 acts. If you're new to path of exiles, I strongly recommend playing POE1, because it is a great game and it's finished/completed (at least for now. POE2 is not. That's why people are truly upset. "My baby! my poor baby!" lol j/k), but after 8-10 years of playing it, it's become repetitive and boring. At least to me. No disrespect intended.

As my dad put it abut POE2, "sounds like it was dumbed down for console", and as my friend put it, "it's new, but that's about it." I happen to agree with most of Lighty's points. This isn't a massive paradigm shift, like Everquest to WoW. POE2 is a small iteration, with a lot of backsteps that hinder progress. So many things I see and wonder "Why did they do this? It's obtuse simply for the sake of being obtuse." Like the map legend system. Why is one variant white, and the other gray? Make completed objectives a completely different color from the non completed objective, or better yet, put a massive X through completed objectives. I know this sounds like a small thing, but if GGG overlooks something so common sense in a small thing, then what else are they overlooking in larger and more important things? Bah, I'm rambling now. However, I will ask this, Why do areas respawn on death? If I want to farm an area, I can reset the map. I don't want or need to fight extra monsters after I die, especially ones that charge towards me at my spawn point like coked up coffee addicts. Why am I being punished by such an archaic and punitive feature in an ARPG? Is it because GGG decided to yank it from Dark Souls without understanding why it's in Dark Souls? I get that it is partially to punish the player, but also If mobs didn't respawn in Dark Souls, then exp and by proxy player levels would be capped significantly. POE 2 doesn't have this issue, you can reset maps to keep the xp flowing. Ugh, I'm rambling again.

I feel if they had named it anything else other than PoE2, it would have been fine and they could have done whatever they wanted, but because it is named PoE2, and they have marketed as a sequel, it just doesn't feel like the same game in terms of what PoE1 offered, and improved upon over the years. I agree with what you said, it feels like a regression of content, mechanics and game play, while at the same time, making improves on things we wish we had for PoE1.

I've never crashed once in PoE 2 and barely even get frame drops while running Deli-Beyond-Breach all at the same time. Campaings are just *chef's kiss*. I love the story, the bosses, how you're progressing through the acts. What I don't like is the VISION(tm) that makes us slow while enemies are still zooming like on PoE1. They don't want to pigeon hole us to archetypes, yet they make the skill tree very hard to not to. Not to mention some skills and combinations are just overtuned, while most melee skills in general feels just too punishing. Unless you go with one of those popular "OP" meta skills, you're not going to keep up with the players that make X divines a day. Magic Find is absolutely broken and stupid. People are abusing their 500%+ MF builds while most people are struggling to kill white monsters with their non-meta builds. I lost my interest as soon as I entered maps. I got bullshit killed a few times by exploding corpses I had no visual of, I got killed while pulling a lever because you can't cancel it, but the mobs can still hit you. I also feel like I'm getting no loot without MF gear. But I can't afford better gear because I don't get lucky with drops, nor can I kill things as fast because I decided to go with a build that isn't as strong. That's all fine and dandy, not every build is meant to be equal, but the difference is just too big. Can't 6L skills because greater jewellers are 35 to 40 ex each and perfect orbs 200+. That's just a trade character, good luck if you play SSF. And yes, I'm aware of the vaal trick, but that's only for 5L's that you can't upgrade in the future anymore. The game currently has too many things people have absolutely hated on PoE1, and I'm sure GGG is aware of it. They just have the anti-fun mentaily and they think that if people get too much loot and enjoy the game too much they stop playing too fast. But considering how popular crafting leagues where most people were able to create good items have been, I don't really understand the logic. Yes, it's EA, no it's not PoE1, I understand. And I'm still playing with a friend from time to time. It's just not fun after hitting maps to me. I feel like no matter how much effort I put into it, I don't get rewarded unless I get mega lucky with some drop and bounce up from that. But I don't expect to win the lottery any time soon. I've got better things to put my time and effort into. Don't get me wrong, I did buy a new supporter pack and I will probably spend more money on the game in the future. Right now, I just have to sit this out until things get more ironed out.

I'm playing poe2 instead of poe 1 because it's the new novelty. I love wasd movement... Would love to see it added to poe1. I think I'd actually be able to do the searing exarch ball phase without dying. I agree with most of your points, but I need a break from poe 1. I'll probably go back next league. The change of pace is nice. My main issue with poe2 is the simplicity of the gem system, and the crafting. I think they need to overhaul essences to replace alteration spam. You ultimately use alterations to get one or 2 mod bases. So i think essences should overwrite magic items with their mod either by a scour transmute or like the poe2 chaos orb removing a mod and adding it's deterministic one. Same with the regal type essence with rare items.

i dont understand the obsession with dark souls dodge combat in gaming. At its hardest they cannot make attacks quicker or harder to see so they end up just increasing hp or damage. Eventually it gets to the point where the big hits all oneshot you and the boss has absurd ammounts of hp so you are just dodging the same few attacks over and over while you slowly whittle down its health. Extremely simple and boring from a desgn philsophy and in my opinion as a gameplay experience. I genuinely hope poe2 enjoys a middling response so that they dont allocate massive funding to this game that already feels 12 years old, although i lost a lot of faith when the all the founders sold out.
@frustratedsquirrel
@frustratedsquirrel Күн бұрын
dodge rolling is an active and purposeful movement tool as opposed to just moving and tanking away damage. It feels really good to dodge roll away from something and know that you made the active decision to do that. Plus it gives players a feeling of agency and technicality when used to cancel out of animations. Basically it just makes everything feel cooler and more technical.
@SunnyBloop
@SunnyBloop 16 сағат бұрын
@@frustratedsquirrel At the same time though, now everything needs to be balanced around having a low CD i-frame up 100% of the time without a resource. That limitation creates a fairly frustrating experience, because now bosses have to one shot you if you screw up - Because there's zero downside otherwise. It WORKS in Dark Souls because Stamina prevents you from absuing it. It WORKS in Dark Souls because fights have more than 5 attacks that are all incredibly telegraphed. These things aren't being considered here, and as such, the fights themselves are sort of boring back and forths without any real danger. (Ironically, most RARES are scarier than almost any boss I've killed so far, and that's usually just because the mods are obnoxious, rather than anything being "hard".) Instead of a dodge roll, why not create skills designed for movement or mitgating damage? Gate them behind CDs, mana, and other resources, let them override other animations etc; they'd function identially to a dodge roll, but instead impart *actual* character/build design choices, with real tangible downsides to misusing them. Right now, I can literally "cast skill, dodge, cast skill, dodge" and never really be in any danger. That enhances the ARPG build design space, while STILL doing exactly what they want to achieve, instead of just blindly throwing another games system into PoE2 just because "it works there, so it'll work here".

the majority of people that sing nothing but praise from poe2 fit into two overlapping categories, they didnt play poe1 to the point where they actually understood the game and theyre coming fresh out of diablo 2. The best thing it has going for it is the updated graphics, but almost every single other system is just better in poe1, it does feel extremely dumbed down to where it almost feels like a rugpull from the devs. hopefully it gets better, but also hopefully they stop delaying our poe1 content. I didn't sign up for my favorite game to be pushed to the sidelines while a worse product replaces it and I would like my december league back. Worst case scenario would have to be someone opening a poe1 private server because GGG just doesnt care about it anymore.

Great video lighty, won't get nearly as many views as it deserves as usual. I played poe2 for about week, made it to red maps and now im back enjoying SSFR in month 5 or 6 or whatever it is of the league again. Im super biased because thats been my favorite and sole game mode ive enjoyed since its release but poe2 doesn't hold a candle to poe1 ruthless, like not even close. I will say its been cool over there to see more and more people showing up either as new players, not wanting to pay the 30 and trying poe for the first time and ending up in ruthless, or seeing people who tried poe2 kinda like the pace but felt the game was largely empty and then coming over to ruthless. It's weird but cool to see almost a 2nd league start and lots of new folks 5-6 months into a league. But yea poe2 is kinda lame, definitely expected more, alot more. Graphics sound even the feel of combat is all great but its just soulless. Have hope and even some confidence it'll be good/great a year from now but we'll see. In the meantime ill happily be enjoying poe1 as always chippin away at those uniques. Nothing i experienced in poe2 has come close to the feeling of finding a +1 for my collection as of yet. @10:00 - I think the reality is, they didn't WANT to improve upon PoE1, they didn't want to make a better game and learn from their mistakes - They wanted to make Ruthless 2.0. They wanted to make what they original wanted PoE1 to be. Period. That's it. THAT is their design philosophy here, and while I disagree and I *do* think they've done a great job at improving player onboarding (The skill/gem system is easier to engage with, the passive tree is simplier, crafting is simplier and less overwhelming etc), that feels entirely at odds with their desires to create a "hardcore, slow, 'hard'" game; only, GGGs version of "hard" is "tedium upon tedium", rather than any actual metric of difficulty. Thing is... No one wants that. Look at the feedback their getting, the consessions they've made already to less the frustrations and pain points that simply only existed to make the game ""harder"". I fully expect to see the EXACT same situation that PoE1 ended up in - Totally shifting away from GGGs real vision, and just becoming another zoomer horde slayer with bloat upon bloat. I hope I'm not wrong here, because I can *see* a vision and world where PoE2 caters to a niche target audience that actually wants a slower game, with less complexity bloat and more challenge/longer grinds (i.e. a D2 vets wet dream, I guess), while existing within the space of PoE1, D4, LE, Grim Dawn etc. That all said, pretty much nailed my opinions with the game honestly. I'll be slowly playing it for now, until D4s new season, then likely drop the game entirely. Greatest thing about PoE2 has been it's made me go back and play D3 again, and made me realise how much fun other ARPGs that respect your time actually are, lmao.

The way i see it, the years of development allocated to poe2 was just enough to make new assests and a few different mechanics/QoL and fewer new systems like the campaign, new skill gem sistem, characters and dumbed down 'crafting system' , oh and endgame is new although at the current state very very undercooked. I wont tell you what i love from poe2 cause you shouldnt need other people's opinion on what to like when you can see for yourself . What i will say is ,the biggest dissapointment of PoE 2 is the poe1 gameplay mechanics reused. I dont mean lab... Although its a whole other can of worms. I mean deli, breach, ritual , essence and so on. With poe 2 trying to be its own game while being poe, i'd say gameplay mechanics would be the way they were different from one-another.

I feel like POE2 is designed to counteract the routine in POE1, which involves 1) copying builds and 2) clearing screens. In POE2, almost every mob and definitely every boss will test your skills and require some brain activity. Players can improve through learning and skill development. And that's the main difference. I think nerfing the surrounding mechanic was a mistake, as it added depth to the battle. I miss the variety of skills from POE1. Wells, for now, seem like a bad idea, but since we have literally not finished half of the game, it's too early to make conclusions.

Ok, so I don't have an X account nor do I desire one so I'm replying here. Secondly I won't comment on the game takes as I didn't play POE2, I'd rather play it when it's complete and buy a supporter pack then if I feel they deserve it. My issues are on the end of the "Sequel Vs. Prequel" paragraph. I don't see enything wrong in wanting a simpler, slower pace game and I find the take "oh, you want a slower and simple game, just play POE badly or lower your IQ by following a build and gear guide" to be, to put it mildly, a bit of a dumb take and the implication that who does is more or less too stupid to play "normally" to be mildly offensive. I'm among those who wants a slower game and find extremely boring zooming through a map clicking once or twice a skill just because you ran out of blink charges. I'm a slow and methodical full-clearer who enjoys picking up and ID loot in the off chance I got something better to wear. I enjoy the leveling process as it gives me the most sense of progressing while I get easily bored by repetitive end-game grinds in which my character stays the same for 90% of the time. This is why to this day I still think D2 is still leagues ahead of what POE is. That didn't stop me from pouring 3k hours into POE trying most of the leagues in SSF mode while still putting a decent amount of hours into D2. Still I'd much rather play a slower game the intended way rather than playing a "dumb and dumber" version of a different game. To that extent POE2 sounds to me like my dream game (once they overhaul crafting and iron out balance) but I'll hold my judgement until it launches. What I find a little surprising and a bit sad is that this comes from you. I've enjoyed watching your content for years, I mostly considered your takes to be particularily well thought and well argumented and being generally more level-headed than most of the other content creators. As a matter of fact I agreed and shared most of your opinions either by having experienced them first-hand or by using common sense and logic. I really struggle to understand where this take comes from and I have the nagging sensation in the back of my brain that this is a glimpse into the real person behind the online persona. There are so many flaws in PoE 2 right now, but I can't imagine myself going back and enjoying the next PoE 1 league, even if it's a great league. I predict they will be similar numbers wise for a while up to release but ultimately due to PoE2 being the newer shinier toy more people will gravitate to it as the main PoE experience and thats regardless of how much slower they decide to pace the game that's just human nature, most people operate on the notion that newer = better no matter what so PoE2 wins by default. I'm sure 80+% of studio resources being allocated to PoE2 would also help.

New players are in for a rough time, PoE 2 suffers from meta chasing harder than PoE did in my opinion. You die, you lose your map and your content and can't progress as fast. Shit builds aren't just shit, it means you physically have nothing to farm. No light at the end of the tunnel, only hope is picking up rares to turn into 3.0 harbinger pennies while meta chasers bask in wealth on trade. Because of this I genuinely think PoE is easier for a new player than PoE 2. Even if you fuckup, there are portals, if you really done bad there is gold for a respec. Even if you can't run higher tier maps, there are essences. Even if you aren't efficient with your time, there are good layouts to spam. For trade players, PoE 2 seems like a net negative experience, economy wise. And for SSF, it's just solo slam found (that's the game mode I play lol). I think the well is bad but I think charms are worse. I don't' know how good the time's are when they're present, I only know when they're gone. What are they, a lover?

I disagree. On my anecdotal view: My friends who never played POE1 or stopped playing after reaching maps have all made their own builds and are in maps now. Though some of them had to remake their characters because they were dogshit. They started trading after a week, with guidance (still rather hard to get into as a new player..). 2 of them have now done 4th ascendency (monk and mercenary). I agree that there should be more than 1 try at a map though. That is way too harsh, especially for some of them who took several tries on the last boss of cruel act 3. Most of what you are calling for haven't been implemented yet, and are 100% going to be added. Especially currency (and new crafting/farming options) at lower level of maps. Endgame is super barebones for sure. Farming in this game is bad, but aren't something that needs to be called out. It will change. Trade being the land of the rich isn't new. Do we forget so fast how bad the new players of POE1 have it? When they see prices of 300+divines for each gear that are deemed 'necessary' for their builds in buildguides? And even with essence farm, harvest farm or heist farm would take hundreds of hours to farm (AS A NEW PLAYER). Not saying that is bad btw, but it feels in bad faith to say that POE1 trade is easy to get into. I might be moving the goalpost, but I think POE2 EA has a ton of gameplay as it stands now, w/o a league, and prolly missing half of the endgame grind.

100% agree. I feel that in the comming weeks, new players will get over the honeymoon phase and realize that POE2 is way less forgiving than they expected. My only hope is that ppl will realize that POE1 is actually better in this regard, instead of dismissing it out of hand because "sequel = better by definition".

I don't ever want to trade. I didn't get great item drops. I made it through but felt like I was missing out on good gear because I refused to trade. I play single-player and only for the campaign with different characters and builds. I agree that trade should not be as important as it seems to be. I have never and will never be an online gamer.

Ok pony thang speaking i promise im not trolling when I say I enjoyed filling my flasks in the well (NOT HP/MANA) I think it felt a little less bad that I was taking my time and playing slow when I knew I had more flask charges than someone who was speeding through the game and not clicking it. This would have been magnified if flask charges actually felt impactful which I think would lead to problems if it was the case But I also liked that the towns were interactive in that small way and honestly if they kept the well and it did nothing I would keep 99% of my tiny enjoyment of that "feature"

Very strongly disagree with this in general, although I respect your take and understand your perspective to a degree I just see it a different way. In general I feel very positive with where EA is at. To use a WoW comparison, ggg is using poe2 as a "stat squish" moment, but instead of changing the raw numbers involved they are shuffling around and iterating on core concepts that have massive repercussions and starting to put down a fresh foundation that aligns better with their future goals. This is most clearly seen in the removal of scours and alterations which has changed how items are valued, and the general downtick in cadence to make combat more thoughtful. These would be very difficult to pitch as "updates" to the first game, as they're diametrically opposed to what is currently implemented. If you can craft items like you can in poe1 how would ground loot ever matter? If you want "meaningful combat" how does that align with one click zoomzoom poe1 playstyle that is so popular? Sometimes to address issues you need to make concessions in other areas. I completely understand being frustrated from the perspective of being a fan of poe1, it has undeniably taken the brunt for poe2s development. At the end of the day though, I am elated about the potential shown by the early stages of poe2 and I think we have mostly gotten through the more difficult part of development from a consumer perspective. Moving forward should be smoother now that EA is out, they will settle into whatever their content cadence ends up being pretty soon. I think they're in a great spot even though I could rant for an hour with largely negative feedback. As you said, it feels like there are a lot of things they should have kind of "learned" already from their experience in poe1 over the years, but I expect they simply have not had the time or ability to implement a lot of the solutions yet. Either way, merry christmas dawg always appreciate your thoughts. 🎄

@@tomaszguzik9018 I just said they wanted meaningful combat, not necessarily that the goal had been reached across every stage of the game on every ascendancy/skill combination, lol. As a sorc that went in blind I have fire and ice walls, a curse and a mark, sigil of power, and orb of storms as spells to augment spark as my main damage dealer with a cast on shock lightning conduit setup on top of all that. It was way more than I would typically do in poe1 and it didn't feel forced or clunky, it felt natural to use different spells in different situations. I thought they did well but I'm not in super late endgame so I'm not surprised it eventually gets trivialized by ppl drowning in currency either... that's kind of a different issue.

I don't really understand how can anyone look at the non existent crafting poe2 and think that it is any way better than poe1 has. They literally went back to multi layered rng with little to no control of outcome. Poe1's crafting systems didn't end up where they are by coincidence, people have complained about it being too rng since forever.

Very hostile take, comparing a game with ten years of expansions to an early access game that’s not even a month into its EA release, you have an odd fetish with Tencent with just sounds anti-Chinese with you providing no real argument, and after ten years of amazing game development you seem to have lost all faith in GGG

you've already decided you don't want to like the game. I've also played a ton of PoE1 and I can't see myself going back to it. The new mechanics and pacing just make the game feel better overall, and most of what you're complaining about here either feels nitpicked or just doesn't make any sense to me. It's like you don't enjoy things that are good. PoE1 at high level becomes a loot rolling simulator, a theme park that you stroll through while pressing one or two buttons, and making decisions about the loot you'll get, like some kind of cookie clicker with very nice graphics. The IDEA of skill combos exists due to the gem system, and that idea of potentially having a really creative and interesting build is there, but it's not realized because the link system is far too limiting beyond just picking your main damage skill and doing everything you can to empower it. In PoE2 you actually get to feel that joy of using multiple synergistic skills early on as you're leveling. You don't have to hunt down the specific skill gems you need for your ideal combo (in PoE1 most of that 'combo' would be support gems and defensive auras/layers anyway). PoE2's game-feel is already far superior to PoE1 and that alone is a one huge reason to play it over PoE1.

Hmm, I didn't enjoy PoE1 nor really any "ARPG" post Diablo 2... PoE2 during campaign felt amazing as a newer player and felt much closer to a souls game, monster hunter or d2... Endgame is feeling like PoE .5. I think it's an existential Dilemma for GGG to tackle here. Personally I never felt 1 button giga clear the screen cookie clicker gameplay to be satisfying, a good use of time, or representative in anyway of the reason I loved Diablo and Diablo 2... If it goes that direction, what is the point of it's existence? Why not just play PoE1, D3/4, Last Epoch... the gameplay is fundamentally the same in all of them... Tele around and blast the screen as fast as possible.

GGG wanted a better game as poe1 has spaghetti code. poe2 has better bossing (still to be rebalanced and be better as killing any boss withing 5 seconds is not what boss designers really want, the longer it lasts, the better. to be fair, every game has it's own speciality: poe1 - crafting and itemisation, poe2 - bossing, d2 - old and cozy. there's no best game overall, there's best game for you.

Because people think it gets better after the campaign. Most casual players are still working their way through acts. There were tons of things that pissed me off while going through acts myself, but it was still a fun experience. As soon as I started mapping I lost any interest and stopped playing. Endgame was just slapped together in a hurry and it shows. Sadly, right now, it's not worth the time and effort for me. Unless you play some mega meta build, it feels like you're just trying to run while you're in knee-high mud.
