Another neat trick is routing whatever you want through additional outputs (like some VST) and into the external FX (like an analog chorus pedal) and then back into a free input. And you get yourself what effectively becomes a digital mixer with a send FX. Dual conversion with modern ADC/DACs is a non issue really

Yes, you can use Pipeline VST in Studio One to do it. Pro-Tools, REAPER and few other DAWs also support hardware insert VST plugins.

On the Daw 1 thru 6 you mentioned you could assign it to go out to any monitor for the band members? Where on the device is the plug coming out of to run the cable to that wedge if I have 6 of them needing a physical cable plugged in?

At 4:54 you can see the additional 6 TRS line level outputs. These are paired L & R, so 3 pairs. The screen you see is not a DAW, but the "Virtual Studio Live", VSL for short, driver and audio routing matrix software.

I have the two channel (2x2) version as I record everything myself...guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, vocals, etc...and it works perfectly. I love the unit, although I bought it used at a pawn shop and it did not come with any of the software or drivers, I was able to download the drivers from the PreSonus website. Once I'm able to obtain the Studio One software, I'm sure it will be totally worth the trouble.

I love Studio One. It took me no more than few hours to get my head around it. Now, I can record a song in a day, and master it the next day. If you are recording drums, then 1818VSL will give you more mics and better drum balance and control, having 8 inputs.

This was about at the 9:59 area of the video I am referring to talking about them going out to a monitor. I have the AudioBox 1818 VSL as well. We have like 6 monitors running to different people and one might say give me more vocals and the other might say I need just to hear the bass and one might need to just want bass and drums all of them have a wedge powered speaker when does it physically plug into the 1818vsl and go out to that monitor or is it something that needs to be setup in the audiobox to reroute the jack to monitor 1, another to monitor 2 and to monitor 3 and so on? Also can you playback and record another track and hear the person adding a part without any latency by having it setup that way if you are using the audiobox as the only playback device?

If you are using a DAW to record and playback, you will have some latency, but listening them directly there will be no latency.

Can i ask, when this Audio Interface connected to PC, does Windows recognises all the devices connectet to it separatly? Like, if i connect 4 microphones, will they be recognised by OS as 4 different mics? Or Windows gonna see only the Audio Interface itself and wont know what devices pluged into it?

It is so versatile, the audio path routing is fantastic and one of few interfaces that support not only one, but two DSP FX channels. Best decision I ever made. I currently own a presonus 2 channel audiobox and thinking about upgrading it to this version. I usually just use the audiobox just to record drum/ guitar covers. I use garageband on my macbook air, would the 1818 interface work with garageband?

The FX on VSL is for monitoring from speakers or headphones. FX is not sent to DAW/Reaper. Only direct audio is sent. There is the 'post' button on VSL that allows you apply the Fat Channel to the channel, ie gate, compression & EQ. But FX1 & FX2 are only for monitoring. You can always apply FX during mixing with your DAW VST plugin. There are workarounds to apply FX to channels via patch cable connections.

Gui Schwertner Yes. Open the VSL software and make sure the output sends 7 & 8 levels are set off. This will stop any direct monitoring any channel to the headphone output.

When using the VSL driver software, there is no latency, as the FAT channel and FX are built inside the 1818VSL unit. I do use it if I need to record up to 8 mic under Windows 10 Pro 64Bit with no issues.

Mine is plugged into USB 3.0. Lowest buffer size of 64 samples, only if I'm using to return effects from my DAW (eg, guitar Amp Sim VST) for under 10ms latency. Using the VSL effects (FAT Channel), you can hear with Gate/Comp/EQ with zero latency, and having normal buffer of 256 samples (less CPU stress while recording). You have the option to record with FAT channel effects applied to each channel. Reverb & Delay are on the main bus and cannot be applied to each channel feed into your DAW. I used to and still do use the VSL FAT Channel gate/Comp/EQ as pre-record audio shaping. Specially the gate as a minimum, to avoid room noise. Hope this helps.

kovacs eugen Thanks for watching. No, the compressor in VCL does’t have side-chain option. For live event, best to use hardware Compressor with sidechain option. If you can get low latency with your pc, then use the option in compressor in Studio One.

Josh I don't think Firestudio Project has VSL option. It uses the Universal Control control-panel application for input/output routing, but no EQ or FX.

Josh There are few FX gear that have S/PDIF in/out, like my TC-Helicon Harmonizer, or my Reverb & Delay FX unit, or my KORG PA3X musical keyboard that has S/PDIF output, meaning I can get digital audio directly to the DAW. It comes in handy at times to get the best possible clean audio, when needed.

Hey! Thanks for the video. I am a piano/guitar artist looking to write hip-hop music and produce on my own. I am looking to get Studio One 3. I found a great price on a brand new Presonus Audiobox 1818VSL, (In the box like yours, and comes with studio one DAW) but some of the comments are saying the software has discontinued? I am not really sure what this means. I haven't started production yet, so choosing the right equipment is stressful. Will I have any problems down the road with buying this 1818VSL? Will it still work with Studio one 3 in a few years and updates from now? Any information will be very helpful! Thank you!!

I still own a AB1818VSL and used it last week. The VSL driver software is no longer supported by the latest MacOS, other than Core Audio, which means no FAT channel. The PC version still works but no longer updated. It runs on Windows 10 64bit with no issues. It will still serve you well for a long time. AB1818VSL will also run with Universal Control (latest driver, but no FAT Channel) by PreSonus, even if VSL driver is discontinued or no longer works.

Richard Suarez It will be a perfect match. I have seen few videos of drum setup with AB1818VSL. You can have up to 8 mics capturing every drum detail, if need be. The VSL software with Gate, EQ and Comp will ease the recording process too.

No, not that I'm aware of. The FAT channel in VSL does not support side-chain compression.

The darker area on the right is the output BUS channels. 2 FX, Out 3&4, Out 5&6, Phones 7&8 and MAIN 1&2.You drag the FX preset to FX 1 or FX 2 Bus, then use the buttons to select and send the FX output to the other output BUS. Use the slider on each channel to send/feed the channel signal to FX 1 or FX 2. At the back of the unit Main Out and Out 1&2 are the same signal, like the Headphone at the front and Out 7&8.

I'm pretty sure the POST will route the audio signal after the FAT Channel. I use this option all the time for HP filter and Compression. Do a drastic EQ and/or Compression and click the POST button as recording a track to verify. Reverb and Delay DSP are at the output of the VSL Mix, so they are not sent to the track channels to DAW.

The VSL should work with any DAW, and it should work with Studio One Free with no issues. Currently it works with Studio One, REAPER, SONAR, Cubase, Samplitude and many others I have tried. Make sure the DAW settings are selecting the correct audio driver, the AudioBox 1818VSL. Let me know what the issues are and I'll see what I can help you with.

Must mention that it is one of few audio interfaces that has near zero latency FX via the VSL. It really helps during recording when FX is required for the vocalist or instrument player, while recording flat clean audio into the DAW. I hope you will be happy as I am.

The box comes with mains power adaptor and USB cable, as well as PreSonus Studio One Artist software (DAW) to get you started within an hour or so. Depending what musical instrument you will be connecting, you will require respective audio leads to connect microphones, guitars or keyboards etc.

JuStMe2414 No, it is the next level up. Allows you to do bit more than the free version. Presonus has upgrade specials for Studio One from time to time, and it will be a cheap update to Pro version. I upgraded mine for AU$299 instead of AU$499 normal price.

I'm so disappointing in Apple for discontinuing core audio support and therefore presonus leaving VSL by the wayside. I purchased an 1818VSL for my studio because i loved how the 22 worked at home. Well now I'm stuck with El Capitan and VSL no longer functions as core audio interfacing has been removed. My mac is also one of the late 2011's, no thunderbolt or firewire, I'm truly up the creek without a paddle. If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them!

+Ted Morris I'm totally with you on this. My AB1818VSL is just over a 18 months old, was planned to be my main interface for some time. Now it sits on the side replaced by another manufacturer's model. Since I have not and will not upgrade my iMac, it keeps working with it with no issues, as well as my laptop running Windows 8.1. I had issues with AB1818VSL running with my new Windows 10 PC I built too. Lot of users are also reporting issues with drop-outs and pops & clicks, running Windows 10. It is so disappointing, as this will not get fixed, since VSL is discontinued, just because Apple decides to drop Code Audio. This does not mean the unit itself will not work, but you cannot have VSL driver working and all of its options available. Very disappointing indeed. If I do come up with a solution, I will make a video about it.

Thanks so much for the prompt response, much faster than the Presonus team ;) I have the unit working with the newest firmware, so that's not a problem, in fact it interfaces with my DAW really well, the only things I lack is 1) The iPad front of house control, I used my 22VSL as a live mixer with my computer and having that on my iPad sounded awesome. 2) The latency free monitoring and the internal DSP effects are now a complete waste! Funnily enough I tinkered around and ended up finangling my way to be able to downgrade El Capitan to Yosemite, so I'm back on Yosemite. I'm litterally about to install Studio One 3 Pro, the 1818VSL Driver and the VSL software and see what happens!

Yes, you can add extra 8 channels via its ADAT In/Out connection, to a max of 16 channel in and 16 channel out. PreSonus does have 8Ch ADAT rack unit, or even Behringer or alike. Unfortunately, you cannot connect 2 AB1818VSL units into 1 PC/iMac. Next options are PreSonus StudioLive mixers.

Yes you can. I used my old MOTU interface to connect via ADat as additional inputs, and in VSL, you can apply the fat channel to each ADat input. I have a video on it on my channel.

When you say 'line in' I assume your PC/Laptol sound line in, then yes, you could also use the AB1818VSL lines 1 & 2 out as they are parallel to MAIN L & R out.

I'm using Win 7 64bit. I do all of steps installation like on Presonus website guide, do install Win 7 SP1 + Platform Update already. When I start Cubase 5, I see on my "VST Audio system" have 4 name to choose: 1.AudioBox ASIO Driver, 2.ASIO Presonus Firestudio, 3.Studio 192 ASIO, 4.StudioLive AR Asio. Then I choose one of them, but there's a warning like this: "Imposible to record audio because the Audio Input is not active. Open the ASIO DirectX Full Duplex Setup dialog. Make sure that a device is selected in the Input Ports Section and that its check box is activated". Could you help me the way to work Presonus 1818VSL Soundcard with Cubase 5, please!!! I have a feeling in desperation, you must have installed all odd drivers from PreSonus, as for AB1818VSL, you should only see AudioBox ASIO Driver. That's the driver you need to select. Uninstall all of the other drivers, unless you have those devices. Here in Vietnam seem nobody know this device and there's no Presonus Center also so I feel hopeless. Eventhough I research about this one very much and I love its sound, so I decide to buy it.

Now my firmware is update to 1.8. And it doesn't work a half. DO you have a file of Driver AudioBox 1818VSL v1.3 - PC, that you download successfully? Could you share me that one? Maybe I can try the last time.

The download is about 8Mb File, your image shows about 5.6mb. Must have failed to download. You can try again and make sure it reaches 8.0Mb. If fails again, let me know I can post a new link from my web site.

What kind of problem? I own Presonus 1818vsl and Focusrite 18i20 for 3 years, no problem till now! New drivers are fine, but if you want VSL function, keep old drivers with NO problems on Win7 and Win10 Tested 100%
