The Garden is slowing down but my Zinnia are still going strong so it's the perfect time to review the varieties I grew this season and look at what I liked enough to put in again next year and what is getting ripped out. I also thought it was a good time to show you all what I actually do with the flowers I cut so stick around until the end to see some of the arrangements I have made over this season.
I'm Pheigi at From The Witch's Garden, a Scottish girl trying to grow cut flowers on my allotment in Kanagawa prefecture in Japan. Remember to subscribe if you want to follow along and see if we actually get any flowers at the end of the season or if it is all a crispy burnt mess.
If you want to see what I do with the flowers I grow check out ‪@fromthewitchsgarden‬ on instagram.

Thanks for the sharing. Some of your lovely arrangements would benefit even more from ferns I think. 🙂

Thank you so much, I am definitely still learning but it’s great to have so many flowers to play with without worrying about how much they cost.

Hi, its the first time Ive seen your channel. Im in zone 9b too over here in N Calif. I enjoyed the review of your zinnias, I just ordered the Queen Lime and Queen Red seeds so I was glad to hear you had success with them. Thanks for an informative video!

Zone 9b can be really brutal in the summer but the zinnia did really well and now that it has cooled down a little they have become really tall and big and I have soooo many flowers. Good luck with your growing 🌱

The open ones are my favorites and I didn't find myself using most of my purples except the zinderellas (which were mostly singles but so cute!). I ripped out my mazurkias as I just couldn't like them. Thanks for the video. Always fun to see which ones others are using

When I see other peoples open ones they seem to have really neat little rings of yellow tiny flower bits in the middle but mine always look half dead and scraggly even when they are only just opening. I also find they have a shorter vase life but mine are all pretty dehydrated due to the crazy heat so maybe it is stopping them from being as beautiful as yours. Happy growing.

Great video! Yep, every time I buy a mix I end up with all the colors I don’t like: red, yellow, and orange. Bought the individual varieties this year.🤗

Hi Pheigi! Great tour of your zinnias. I have heard that zinnias will revert to the more open center if the seedlings were very stressed. So maybe some of the ones you expected to be more like the pompom shape could turn out better next time if the seedlings are happier.

Yeah, I think everything gets really water stressed and reverts back to basic form. I guess I have to spend more time out with my watering can.

I'm glad the cactus zinnia made the list! I am not a fan of red flowers either although If I get a red cactus flowering I'm not mad. I get a giant wine colored zinnia from Pinetree Seeds that is one of my favorites. (I realize you can't order from them.) My queen lime did get huge flowers like a muffin top cupcake without my help. Anyway...the ranunculus bouquets make me swoon!

I planted the mixed Benary's Giant this year and had the best results with the purple, wine and yellow. Like you, I found the white BG to be underwhelming. Next year, I'm skipping the the Benary's and going back to purple prince, violet queen, and polar bear zinnias which are similar in size but produce more flowers.

I've had problems with zinnias from the start (3rd year of flower farming). The plant growth is just unreliable - they germinate OK, but then are patchy in the field. The big scarlets are good focal flowers, so I'll grow them again, and I'm gonna grow the Queen Limes as filler. We're just getting going here in Australia while you're winding up ...🎉

I love that Japan is equidistant from America and Australia so my feed is always full of flowers. The zinnia are about the only thing that have handled the heat this summer so they will be back I will just have to keep trying different varieties until I find one I like. I have kangaroo paw and eucalyptus in my home garden and they both burnt up in the heat. Good luck with the coming season.

Great video! Having trouble understanding why so many people like the brownish\orange dead\dying looking color better than the vibrant red or yellow blooms... To each their own I suppose...

Maybe collect seed from the ones that did good, let them adapt to your environment through the years.

Im not a fan of red or yellow flowers really myself. Im new to your channel, will you show us how to store the dahlias for next season? Greetings from Western Australia🦘🦘Cheryl

After my first season I dug up my dahlia and cleaned, dried and stored them but Winters so dry here I just had them in a cardboard box wrapped in newspaper in my loft and they were fine. There is a video of that on my channel. This year, as I am in zone 9b I just dug and separated the tubers I wanted and put them straight back in the ground as the winter is so mild they should be fine out in the garden which saves me the stress of storing them over winter. What is your zone? Are your winters cold?
@downundervlogs
@downundervlogs 6 ай бұрын
@@fromthewitchsgarden My zone is Temperate, our winters are cold here that can get down to average 8 degrees C. Our summers are mild where I live.We don't get frosts here. My dahlias and zinnias are mainly in pots. Should I just store the dahlias in my pots or dig them up?
@fromthewitchsgarden
@fromthewitchsgarden 6 ай бұрын
@@downundervlogs If you don't get a frost then there is no need to take them out the ground(or pot), you can just leave them where they are. dahlia can freeze in harsh weather then when they defrost they turn to mush but if there is no freeze there is no problem so save yourself the work and just leave them. It is recommended that you dig them up every three to five years to divide the tubers as they grow pretty quickly and will start to crowd themselves out resulting in lots of foliage but fewer flowers. This is especially true if they are in pots and have a restricted growing space.

@@fromthewitchsgarden Thankyou for the great advice. especially if it can save me some time and effort in leaving them in the pot. New subscriber to your channel. 😃👍🦘Cheryl
