Great to see you throw a few choice discs back hand and flick. The insanity fission is a go to flick disc for me. I have it in 2 other plastics, but fission plastic fits my game. The f5 is perfect, as well. I have a light version in spectrum plastic. Flies like an innova leopard. The dragon floats, that's about it. Hard to throw. Going over water hazards, take a disc you know will make it and go for it. Make believe there is no water and pick a target. Much better chance to get there. Thanks for the video Nick. Try to flick a Jade on big anhyzer and roll it on a flat open fairway. I bet you will get some real distance.

I have a floating dragon for anytime I'm near water. LOL I don't throw it well but the floating is worth it. I really appreciate your videos since I am a 58 year old woman who only started playing a couple of years ago. But I am having so much fun playing. But like you I don't have the arm speed for some of the discs. I have a Leopard3 that I use almost exclusively for forehand(flick) shots. Because my forehand is better then my backhand. Keep the videos coming because I find them informational and enjoy them as well. Thanks!

Thank you so much for your comments. I really appreciate them!! Yes, the floating Dragon. Haha!! I wonder if mine goes into the water so much because it's such a terrible disc! haha! I've heard it's on a list of the worst discs! I'm slowly getting better with the flick but I have to remind myself that it hurts when I throw it, I wasn't throwing it right. I think the flick makes up for my low arm speed. Keep havin' fun out there, my friend!!

Interesting that the insanity flies better for you forehand. I wonder if it's due to it being easier to spin with the wrist flick than slinging it backhand. Good to know! The dragon seems to just not be in a great spot. It's overstable for slower arm speeds, but if your arm speed is slightly faster, it just immediately turns over and dumps into the ground. The diamond seems to do everything it does but better. At least it floats, I guess!
@NickArnette
@NickArnette Жыл бұрын
Yes, I must be getting more spin off of my flick when I release it. I'm guessing arm speed isn't as much of an issue when throwing a flick. Yeah, the only saving grace to the Dragon is that it floats and I test its floating capabilities on a regular basis! haha!!

You should try a similar weight Fission Crave or Neutron Hex. I think they would give you nice straight shots with dependable fade when released flat or a nice turn and gentle fade when released with an anhyzer angle. And when you flick them you will probably get a lot more distance because they'll likely flip up just a little and ride straight for longer before they fade.

Another good video for old dudes! In noticed something in my yard last week throwing my light weight 145g Wraith in Blizzard plastic. My backhand was flying overstable (never happy with it), but I randomly tried the flick and threw several gorgeous straight shots as far as my typical backhand from other discs. So those over stable discs in very light weights can still work for us I think. Lighter weight flick discs are safer too I would think.

Something to keep in mind with any of the MVP/Axiom discs is that they (especially fairway and distance drivers) really need more rotation to get more true flights. This is why you got a less OS flight on your Flick compared to your backhand. Not saying to stay away from their discs, but just go into it knowing it will fly more OS than the numbers suggest when you’re throwing them.

Hey Nick, I just ordered an Infinite Sphinx based solely on the flight numbers (9, 6, -3, 1). Hopefully it'll become my beginner distance driver, although I imagine any sort of wind might be a problem... Luckily for me I'm fairly ambidextrous (throw a ball left hand, play tennis right hand), so equally incompetent throwing backhands LH or RH!

brand new discs tend to be more overstable than after a few months of use (depending on how many things you hit and how much you play). i have several discs in my bag that have been favorites for 5-7 years. since i like them i use a new identical disc for overstable needs. that way you are not constantly changing the feel of the grip to a different rim. example : i have a R-Pro Pig in the bag that has been there for 17 YRS. after about 10 years i started using it as a windy day putter as well as aproaches. i just added a brand new one so i have all the bases covered with a disc i am very comfortable with.

Wow! That's so cool!! I would be so terrified of losing one of those well-beat in discs!! You must be pretty good at keeping your discs on the fairway!! I''ve played a few courses lately with weeds to high I spend more time looking for discs than playing. My friend lost a couple brand new discs last week. I have a well-beat in Mamba that's super flippy and I was using it a lot before I started learning to flick. Thanks a million for you comment. I'm really trying to beat in that Insanity, hoping it will be a little less overstable for me.

@@NickArnette here is what i do to brand new discs to take the "new" off. i take the disc and fold it like a taco. tthen i turn it 90 degrees and do the same thing. then i work the rim with both thumbs and first fingers (bending up) like somone was making a fancy edge on a pie crust until it sits flat on a table. thats about equal to hitting trees for about a season without damaging the plastics edge. you can also tune a worn disc to fly with more stability by working the edge so you are pushing down on the top the top (opposite of the initial break in work) and going and the outside edge a couple of times. i learned this from Climo when he would tune his beat in Rocs to fly straighter . by the way, i am a much better teacher than a player 😀

I by no mean am anyone to give advice but I’m guessing that the reason you can flick and get good flight like the flight numbers suggest is because you are not getting enough spin on your backhand. Try to force more spin on your backhand, it helped me a lot

I think the forehand flick shots might be flying straighter than your backhands because you're getting more spin onto the disc. I recently got a polecat to experiment with and I've found that on forehands I'm getting much straighter shots at the same speed and I think it's due to the flick of the wrist at the end of the throw.
@NickArnette
@NickArnette Жыл бұрын
I think you're right about the spin! I've been experimenting with "curling" my backhand more to see if I can get more spin on it. I've also changed the position of my right foot on release and that seems to be helping too.

Hey Nick. I'm not trying to put you down or disrespect in anyway, but looking at your form when you throw. It looks like you are mainly using your upper body to throw the disc. Look up some tutorial on how to throw and try to get an emphasis on using your hips to shift your body clockwise as you throw a back hand. That and try to extend your hand behind you before you throw as you initially have your body weight behind you and then you pull your body weight (through the disc) towards your target. Now I'm not sure of your capabilities and if you are capable of doing it, but it is just like you said. "If it hurts, your doing it wrong". A disc golf friend said it best when he said "less is more". Focus more on doing a proper form that has good timing and transitions. I swear, I throw furthest when I don't focus on power and instead focus on my form. I hope you can do the same. Keep up the videos and spread the love and disc golf.

@@vash98mm My flick is inconsistent. I started out using mid ranges and flicking them lightly, and gradually a little faster. The River flicks really well. I use a split grip. It's easiest for me. I am liking the flick more and more. It really seems to come in handy! I'm going to have a pro on a future episode that throws mostly flicks. I think he will have some great tips to share! They say overstable discs are easier to flick, hence the midranges being a good way to learn. Hope it helps!!

Search for "slingshot arm" disc golf. He has some good explanations of using your hips torso, and just using the arm as a "pocket" to hold the disc. I saw this and was like " I've been doing it wrong for 20 years!"
@vash98mm
@vash98mm Жыл бұрын
@@NickArnette To engage your hips I found it easiest to twist your legs (both of them at the same speed) clockwise as you are preferably on your big toes to use your calf muscles to help with the power. If you are unable to use your calf muscles to stay on your toes, being on your heels as you twist will be easiest, but you won't get the same power. Though you will throw "farther" (thanks for that correction) than just using your upper body. The whole point is to have less surface area on your feet as you "Do The Twist" so that you have less resistance on your feet, so you 1. Don't slow down the twisting speed and 2. (most importantly) Don't twist your ankle or knee because your body is twisting, but your foot gets stuck. I hope this helps you and please try this at slower speeds first so you can gain a proper form before trying it at 70 percent power. I don't wanna hear that you got hurt trying something new while using all your strength in the first go. "He who wishes to climb the ladder. Must start at the bottom first" That's especially true when you're older and more likely to get hurt if you take a fall. I hope you got the "Do The Twist" reference, and hope you get better at your game. Remember throwing a disc is not using one muscle to achieve it. It is using your whole body to manipulate the disc as we use our bodies like a Trebuchet.

The Insanity is a nice disc, is a bit too stable for your backhand. Try an Axiom Virus 9,5,-3.5,1. That should have the flight you’re looking for. Or you can try a Axiom Rhythm 7, 5, -2, 1. The comment someone made about needing more lower body for your backhand is right on. But your upper body can also improve. The backhand throw is not a straight line. It’s more like a whipping motion. It’s out from the body on the reach back, forward toward your chest, and then flick your wrist away from your body. One throwing form source is Overthrow Disc Golf.
