Thanks to everyone who have pointed out that the Phantom Thieves’ shadows are actually their Personas, which I’m not sure how I forgot about it, as Morgana does explain that during your first trip to Mementos. That’s my bad, though if anyone could also let me know where in Strikers they tell you inputting the keyword into EMMA transfers your shadow over, I’d appreciate that too. I don’t want to doubt the world building in this game. Hope you all enjoyed the video regardless!

Like for helping out the new main characters or even as dlc characters because there is soo much potential in these two to reemerge to help out the new "phantom thieves"
@CamperCarl003 жыл бұрын
It is after you return from Alice's jail that they explain that Emma is not putting real people in the metaverse, but their shadows. Keep in mind, Jails are not Palaces and are actually closer to Mementos, which is the shared cognition of the public. This is why the shadows there affect their real life counterparts. The only reason why it remains confusing is because the team treats it like a palace way too long, and there seems to be two waves of realization that the people who are sucked into the metaverse are just their shadows.

You can thank the rabid “P5 on Switch!” fans for that. Remember when this was first teased and people thought it meant Persona 5 was being ported to the Switch? When the first trailer came out revealing that this was actually a Persona 5 Dynasty Warriors game (which personally got me so excited since I love Dynasty Warriors) people got mad that it wasn’t a port of the original P5. So ATLUS was met with boos and hisses saying this not at all what the fans wanted (I know they are a bit of a minority but no less loud about their wants.) and were all disappointed because an UNCONFIRMED RUMOR turned out to be not true. I’m seriously just glad the game finally came out in English.

@@jamesvalkyrie7469 I kind of understand the outrage, to an extent. Look at this from the port beggars point of view, for like a year they had been begging for a single game, and when they see that it might finally happen, naturally, excitement ensues. But they later find out that not only is it not what they thought it was, it was instead a SEQUEL to the very game they were begging for. Not only could they still not play they game they've been asking for, they can't play the sequel because obvious reasons. It's almost insulting really. Of course spamming hashtags and shit on twitter is stupid and annoying but I understand why they felt the way they did.
@TheArn953 жыл бұрын
6:40 Everyone has a shadow, but for it to appear in a palace it needs to have distorted desires. A shadow is a part of someone that they don't want to see, so they even hide it to themselves so they can ignore its existence. The Phantoms don't have shadows because they already have their personas, which are their shadows that they accepted during their Rebellion. In P4, anyone that gets into the TV can encounter their shadow, even if it's not in a place that their shadow generated (i.e Chie's shadow in Yukiko's Castle), and you could say that it may not work the same way in p5 but it does, since Futaba actually accepts her shadow in her Palace. You can see her shadow transforming into her persona during her awakening cutscene. So my theory for why the random people's shadows appear is that EMMA is made to transport their shadow only in the Metaverse why they input a valid keyword. The Phantoms are transported in the metaverse because they accepted their shadow as a part of themselves, so the whole of them get transported since they make one with their shadow. Normal people didn't accept their shadow yet, so we can consider that their mind and their shadow is separated, explaining why only their shadow appear in the Metaverse.

Well most of the phantom thieves had to be brought by someone else to get into a Palace (i.e Ann sneaking in Kamoshida's Palace thanks to Ryuji & Joker at the beginning of the game). I think there are 4 main differences between Jails and Palaces : 1. Jails are able to influence prople in the real world outside of the Monarch 2. They do not disappear after a change of heart 3.The entire existence of Bird Cages and Trauma Rooms and how you need to destroy them to steal the desires 4. You do not steal the Monarchs desire in order to change them , you steal the desires they stole from regular people and change their hearts just by convincing them to change 5. 25:30 Panther and Haru! Haru rocket launcher is basically mini AOE attack and I think it also gets buffed with the passive skills she gains while leveling! SPOILERS FOR PERSONA 5 STRIKERS AND ROYAL : 13:20 I dunno about not being a big obstacle. Considering the fact that Palace rulers didn’t have a direct effect on the hearts of the masses while Monarchs did. Like, you mentioned Kamoshida, he was an asshole. That’s for sure, but he was only one teacher whose actions were only limited to Shujin (comparing to Alice who have an effect on hundreds of people in Shibuya) And about Monarch themselves... I think they managed to balance them out here better (than the villains in P5)... Alice -> Abused managers, Forcefully changed people hearts (as showed durning talk shows), forced people to buy her merch and clothes, men basically abandoned their partners just because she made them love her so much. They were loosing money to the point where they ended up with huge debts, they didn’t care for anyone except for her. Hell some people who lost their desires became violent, to the point where they attacked physically anyone that dared to speak ill of Alice. Her backstory and the talk she had with Ann at the end of Shibuya Jail actually made me feel sympathetic towards her. She was heavily bullied in the past (bullying can have a strong effect on people) not only that she was constantly being haunted by her past plus one of her bullies appearing out of nowhere and started spreading rumors and stories again and let’s not forget that creation of Jails (and Monarchs) have a big effect on people hearts and conditions (Mariko Hyodo after her change of heart described it as “Waking up from a bad dream/nightmare”). So they aren’t even their normal selves. Alice true goal was to become a ray of light to people (a noble goal considering her tragic past)... and sadly it all changed once she became a Monarch and started abusing her new powers Natsume -> Changed hearts of his fans (forcing them to buy his work), plagiarized works, his fans became obsessed to the point where they attacked anyone that spoke ill of him (case similar to Alice), hell they even forced some author to close their social media accounts after she raised concerns about plagiarism. Natsume past had a big effect on him, his work was bad, he lost too many times but didn’t want to give up. His editors used him and his position as a grandchild of famous author to get as much money as possible. The contest he participated in, the results were fabricated. What he truly wanted was praise for his work, after getting powers he brainwashed people and got what he wanted but... that wasn’t genuine at all (as explained by Yusuke durning Natsume’s Arc). Mariko Hyodo -> Helped cover up the accident to save up her position as Mayor (she didn’t have a choice if she wanted to stay in the office), forcefully changed hearts of thousands in town to win election, abused her power and made people work over time to the point where they could barely walk (some parallels to Okumura and how he treated his employees). Her past : After discovering the truth about girl, she pretty much made sure to not make the same mistake ever again. She forced her people to work over time to make sure the history is not repeated. After she gained her power she used it to expose other politicians in Sapporo, but later on she herself became corrupted and had to be stopped. Akira Konoe : He is one of the few people that kickstarted the events of the game but... In a way he reminds me of Maruki from P5R. Both have the sort of “Messiah complex”. Both abused their powers and thought they were doing something good, both saw themselves as saviors (someone that actually can help Humans. In case of Akira he thought changes of Heart would eliminate all evil, he thought what he was doing was just, he wanted to eliminate corruption and essentially creating a world where people would be unified and thus eliminating all corruption but in case of Maruki he thought granting wishes and making dreams a reality would allow people to live without pain -> only happiness... Both had the same goal, world without suffering). Akira of course used more dirty tricks than Maruki (for example, blaming Phantom Thieves for the death of the researcher in Okinawa or blaming them for shutting down Emma servers), but what he did he saw as necessary evil so his plan “Operation Oraculi” would come to fruition, he also used other Monarchs as pawns (as you could see while exploring his Jail)... But ironically in the end he himself ended up being a pawn, a pawn to be used and then gotten rid of, not only that his over reliance on Emma proved to be his undoing (Emma basically ditched him as soon as he got his calling card, plus she lied to him and kept him in shadows regarding Kyoto’s Jail and she didn’t even tell him about Zenkichi’s daughter). And let’s also not forget about his past, abused by father, his mother getting killed because of money, Akira himself almost got killed as well so he did what he thought would be just and killed his own father, he was escaping his past, took over Maddice. Bought Emma from Ichinose (without realizing Ichinose and Emma were planning to use him), got famous... He wanted to become a hero but like Makoto said that in the end, he ended up being no different than his father. I actually found Konoe to be one of the best characters in the game (if not in the series). I really liked his Arc and I hope we will get a bit more info about him in the future (like what happened to him, and if revelations in the finale arcs changed something about his situation etc). I don’t talk about Akane here because I consider her to be “Proxy Monarch” set up by Emma. So yeah, all those Monarchs have done terrible things, but what I like more is the backstory they were given. I think Persona 5 Strikers gave us way more info about targets comparing to Persona 5 Vanilla/Royal. Hence why we could actually sympathize with them after each of their arcs ended. Plus what I like about their changes of heart is that comparing to the palace rulers in Persona 5 they didn’t go all crying/sobbing etc. It’s like... change of heart allowed them to go back to their real selves, to the people they were before they became Monarchs. To rediscover who they were before this entire mess began. I think Persona 5 Strikers nailed it when it comes to the story. Villains/Antagonists were well written here and I actually really like them. There are some few issues regarding this game, however plenty of things were done right and I think this game was just amazing

Over working staff to the point of hospitalization is not as dark as it could be but the backstory of the 3rd to last jail and what happened to the abandoned jail are really dark. And while not all the jails seem top priority, they are still jails that they should get rid of as was there agreement for the police not to arrest them. The thieves don’t get their desires stolen. Instead they bring their physical bodies into the jails/metaverse. that’s probably why they don’t have shadows in the jails. As Jails are inherently different from Palaces, becoming friends with a monarch on EMMA puts the person’s own individual shadow in the Jail. As the thieves are persona users, and “persona = ‘tamed’ shadow” still applies, they’re able to resist their desires being taken from their own shadows
@joepo65223 жыл бұрын
Jails’ differences from Palaces (spoiler warning): - Being activated by EMMA and only needing a keyword, no further details - The monarch is capable of using their jail to take desires from the shadows of people they connect with on EMMA - The thieves aren’t taking the monarch’s own distorted desire, they’re taking back the victims’ own desires - Contains cores, objects that reinforce the idea of the monarch’s power over the area - The monarchs are technically made against their will, using their own trauma to entrap them, hence the trauma cells and birdcages - They don’t disappear after the desires are removed, and can be entered from anywhere once the monarch is gone I do agree Atlus didn’t do well in making them *feel* different from Palaces, but the differences are there

I just want to make few remarks to the story section. About that shadows comes only from palace ruler cognition in Persona 5. Those people actually aren't shadows, but cognitive versions of real people. If we look closely none of the other people in the palaces in P5 have yellow eyes (which is characteristic for shadows), accept palace ruler of course, indicating that they are cognitive versions (representation how palace ruler sees them). However in jails everyone have yellow eyes, which means they are real shadows (part of the real person and messing with shadow affect person in real world). Using the keyword moves shadow to monarch's jail in P5S. And about that Phantom Thieves don't have their shadows in monarch's jail. That's because persona users can't have shadow. In P5 during our second trip to mementos (after finding first resting area) Ann ask Morgana can they find their shadows in mementos. Morgana explains that this is impossible, because shadow becomes your persona. This is also supported by P4, where everyone on the investigation team (accept Yu) gain there persona after becoming one with the shadow. That's why Phantom Thieves can enter jails, there former shadow, now persona, is part of them. Those are all my remarks, other than that amazing video, I really like your reviews. And you definitely should make video about Persona anime, I would love to see your thoughts about that.

Thanks for typing it out for him. As a long time fan, this is the sort of thing I understand intuitively at some levels. I dunno if this person played the other Persona games but that argument of phantom thieves not having shadows screamed newcomer to me or at least one that has not played Persona 4. Edit: Wow, this is such a bad take. Of course the villains are cartoonish, they were never bad to begin with or at least not as bad as P5 villains. Comparing the two is just wrong in my opinion. And saying bullying is not as terrible as what the phantom thieves went through? We absolutely had no idea what the details were but regardless the idea was precisely that unlike the cast, they found an easy way out and exploited it to avoid confronting their trauma head on. If anything P5's villains were more comically cartoonish and stereotypical one-dimensional baddie.

The "edging issue" (where the outline of the character models look pixely) is there on pc aswell, and i have a pretty good pc aswell And the way i see the stealing the desires thing is that when the people type the keyword to emma their shadows get transported to the jail and their desires get stolen (note that shadows and cognitive beings are different, cognitive beings [that you see in p5 palaces] are the way the palace ruler sees the person in question and harming them will not do anything to the real life counterpart, shadows however are the persons other self and harming them will harm the real life counterpart) And my explanation to how the phantom thieves can go there and move around is that they dont have shadow versions of themselves because they have personas which are essentially the same thing, so their personas get transported there instead and because their personas are attached to themselves they go there too. !SPOILERS! As to how Zenkichi got transported to the okinawa jail while he didnt have a persona yet, i have no clue.

So, in P5 and P5R (and even in the other modern Persona games) they painfully explain that Shadows are beings created by suppressed human emotions. The other side of you that manifests in the Other World (Metaverse/Midnight Channel). Everyone has a Shadow and it exists in the Other World. In P5, some of these Shadows had such strong distorted desires that they created a Palace unique for themselves inside Mementos. Inside these Palaces, puppet-like beings are born from the Rulers cognition of reality (The Phantom Thieves calls them Cognitive Beings). Cognitive Beings are NOT someones Shadows, just a part of the Palace. The students inside Kamkshida's Palace, for example, are NOT Shadows but Cognitive Beings. They are no different to the walking ATMs in Kaneshiro's Palace. And in some ways, no different from the floating Bank, they are just distortions. Inside Jails, people's actual Shadows (not Cognitive Beings) are brought in and stole of their Desires by the Monarch. The Phantom Thieves don't meet their Shadows inside Jails because their Personas are their Shadows (also explained in P5 by Morgana). To aweken to a Persona it means to reunite with your own Shadow, the other you from the Other World, and accept it as a part of yourself. It means to become one with your other self. In other words, Emma had a different effect on the Phantom Thieves because they're Persona Users. There is no more difference between their real selves and their Shadows as their are now one, therefore if you being a Persona User's Shadow in your Jail, you have to also bring the real self in the Jail.

6:55 The volleyball player you showed was not a Shadow Self but, a Cognition by the Palace Ruler (ie: what the ruler THINKS of that person). The Shadows Selves in Strikers are from real people, then the Shadow Selves' stolen desire influences the real person. The Phantom Thieves are teleported in whole because their Shadow Selves became their Personas. It wouldn't make sense for just their Shadows Selves to get pulled in when they've turned them into Personas and took on their Rebel Form. Granted, in the context of Persona 5, the Shadow Self = Persona thing is explained in P5/P5R via talking to the party in Mementos so pretty easy to miss information that isn't elaborated on in P5 Strikers.

It's a perfectly viable option if you lack the PS4 or a powerful enough PC.

Can I just point out the irony that Age of Calamity, a spin- off of a game with a jump button doesn't have one, while Strikers adds one despite Persona 5 not having one? Just thought that was kind of weird.

I would definitely give the ORIGINAL P4 anime a watch. P4 The Golden's anime is pretty horribly phoned in...though I can't help but smile at the fact P4G's anime basically plays out as if it's Yu on an NG+ in the Golden timeline. Also, mainline SMT is Persona, but harder. That's about the best analogy I can make to SMT vs Persona outside the fact it was basically Pokemon before Pokemon was Pokemon.

I completely agree with you to get Persona 5 Strikers on sale. It's a good game but with the likes of Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal, it's hard to recommend over those games. The amount of content both royal and golden offer is insane. They also both frequently go on sale so I'd say to play those games before getting Strikers on sale.

Honestly, while it’s a good game, there is one major blemish, at least in my eyes. I’m of the opinion that the word “simp” is way too hateful of a word, lambasting Stan-like behaviors, specifically of the man towards women variety. If you ask me, it’s a mix of heterophobia, misandry, and misogyny all in one (and if you think about it, is kind of a double standard regarding ATLUS not wanting to offend sexualities when asked why they changed gay people into drag artists). Until the word becomes bastardized to the point that both the words simp and Stan are indistinguishable from each other in meaning, I’ll always be skeptical at best whenever the word simp is uttered even once.

I can actually answer the question of why normal people’s shadows get sent to the Jail and not the Phantom Thieves. Ok so it works by what can be sent this means that it will send anyone’s shadow to the Jail, but the Phantom Thieves don’t have shadows Morgana explained this. So since they have no shadows the answer is that since EMMA can’t send anything else it has to send them into the Jail fully.

Spoilers for the game: The fact that the games final boss is the Siri esque app turned god ( because SMT) feels really relevant to today’s society and an interesting spin of the themes of P5.
@phillemon76643 жыл бұрын
That's what I love about Persona in general is that the themes of the games and the final bosses wrapping them up are so relatable Yaldabaoth representing conservatism/the people's proclivity to authoritarianism, Maruki representing dwelling on the past and the refusal to move forward, and now with Demiurge representing humanities willingness to give away autonomy to tech companies because "it makes things easier". Love these games so much (I could go deeper as to what every other final boss represents but that would take ages.

One thing about SMT (yeah, I know you're sick of this) but don't start with Nocturne. He is one of the best of the series but at the same time not only one of the most difficult of the franchise but of the entire genra. If you want to start, do it with SMT IV, which was expressly designed to be beginners friendly. P.D. More than hard is toturialless

With how open Ryuji in general is about them being the Phantom Thieves I'm honestly surprised they haven't just sewn his mouth shut. He was abhorent about holding in tongue in P5/P5R and even WORSE in P5S. Most of the time the phantom thieves are good about keeping themselves concealed. All except for Ryuji who from the beginning of Persona 5 needed to just shut the hell up. All of the mess ups stem from Ryuji's one brain cell gasping for air.

My biggest problem is how shitty some of the dungeons were like I hated the snow castle and the actual dungeon crawling of Ichinoses jail
@thorn_lekoh3 жыл бұрын
The Phantom Thieves don't have Shadows in Jails because... they actually do, they're using them every time they cast a spell, assuming it all works like it does in P4. That's the part of the Persona series that vastly differs from real world Jungian psychology, where they made Personas your "true self" that emerges when you've faced your Shadow (essentially the Shadow "evolving" into the Persona), when in reality they're quite the opposite, they're supposed to be the fake self you use to interact with others.

I think the reason why p5s had “meh” monarchs was because they weren’t *supposed* to be “evil,” they were just trying to do good but it isn’t right
@muthesquirrel3 жыл бұрын
I don't think the villains are MEANT to be as evil as in the first game, cos they're not really villains, they're also victims. That's where the jails are different to palaces, not in form, but in fuction. They're people without palace-level desires that have been forcefully trapped within thier own trauma. It's not the RULERS that become more serious, it's the TRAUMAS that become more serious. It's about how the trauma in someone's life, if they're trapped within it, can warp an otherwise good person into someone cruel in a cycle.
@spydersoup84473 жыл бұрын
You say that Persona 5 has officially run it's course, but there's one thing about Persona 5 that people won't rest until it happens. A Persona 5 Arena game. Yep, I wish I was joking about this.

alice can steal people's desires by taking their desires people receive the card to enter the jail then these real people caught off guard by the shadows and taken their desires from them soo yeah when their desires taken they become kinda like worshippers of alice
@bigboopus50593 жыл бұрын
I don't think the goal of the "villains" in this game was to be outright evil. I thought it was pretty clear that they were all supposed to be morally gray to better establish the core theme of justice and emotional understanding. Their issues were the result of them being selfish and misguided, despite deep down having good intentions. While 5 flourished in bringing attention to the unpunished corruption in current society, Strikers definitely does a much better job at pushing us to evaluate our own drives in life.

I'm still mad at ann for the whole journey not getting in touch with Alice like she promised 😂 I agree with the other points too, but honestly sometimes it frustrates me from a writing perspective that she was basically dropped from ann's mind(sure she and the theives might say her name when talking about the past monarchs, but ann in P5 vanilla had the courtesy to mention shiho atleast once in her confidant lol). Least that's my main conplaint aside from lavenza/velvet room, felt like I actually wanted to go in P5 vanilla and Royal atleast xD
