DanTDM’s lab I feel like in my mind, is about on the level of iconography of a building as something like Spongebob’s or Squidward’s house. They are simple, very rough, but have a cartoonish charm to them that allows for a sandbox of chaos in each time its featured

Once as a kid, I lost my way in a minecraft world. I couldn't find where my house and expansive property had been. This had happened once or twice before and I was very upset. I had made many builds and created many friends there from mobs. An island, a wolf adoption sanctuary based on Stacy's from One Life, a checkered house, a playground, a long railway all the way to a nearby village...I had a villager I called my mom, a little guy with a pumpkin head I called my daughter, just pretend games and stuff. I was overjoyed when I eventually found my main area again! However, I was shocked and upset when I looked at my builds and realized, after such a long while of being away, eyes reset from all that time, that my builds were ugly. None of them were as good as I remembered. I didn't play much after that, but I'll always be grateful for the good memories I had building and pretending and expanding my large estate. Even if the builds weren't actually that good, heh heh...

yeah, right? i did manage to worldedit all of my worlds together, and there was one particular base from 7+ years - castle what i covered with a mountain. it is a complete mess. mob spawners, not ended lines of defense, crammed to the outer dirt wall village, endless random stairs. at the time it looked great. but also, there was the top of the original mountain with the rare broken 1.12 villagers, nice cozy houses(because previously they all was living in a dirt barracks and i felt guilty), huge 4x4 taiga trees alley and a glass/smoothstone wall. there was my past. the base itself was recreation of the long lost mountain base that i even struggle to remember now, the terrain - so plain and barren - was the place from which you can see the size of the build. nowadays we have an amazing pre-generated mountains, caves and hills, which are making your impact on the world is so insignificant in comparison. i kept it. i barely remember how to get there, but it is there somewhere. it is with me. keep your memories, my random internet friend. say hi to the wolves for me, haha.

old bad builds have a charm to them. Non of your old builds will look good, when new building techniques come, the 1.14 texture update, new blocks, alot of old builds will stop looking good, take dan's old lab, the fround area is a mess, iron isnt a grate building material, the testig chamber had the old glass texture which sucked, and over all, isnt that good, but we love it because it's charmingly bad. It's like a pug, it's an ugly creature, but it's so ugly that it gives it it's own charm. another example is the old villages, they are bad, but scince they are so bad they become fun to walk through, they are charmingly bad, that or bad builds give a nostalgic feel.

I used to have so much patience for large and unneccessary builds and playing in flats worlds and such, playing in creative. I remember an absolutely massive jungle wood box treehouse on jungle trees me and my brother made that had like 4 floorswith hallways wrapping all the way around and inner rooms, rails that went everywhere and into a nearby desert village, and had paintings, secret rooms, piston doors and escape railways, etc. Now I have no patience to build anything, creative or survival, with people or alone. Shitty designing and worse redstone, but I still miss it.

That comment on how someone who watched Dan back then would be 18 now really made me realize how long ago that was. Since I am that child, and soon I'll be turning 19, it's crazy how time flies. Another story I have related to DanTDM is that I was such a big fan that I ended up making a world just to rebuild his lab. I spent a good few minutes just trying to find a similar spot in the desert. The build was even more janky then the original but that's to be expected seeing as I was around 10 years old. I also added Grim and Dr Trayaurus although I'm pretty sure I spelled his name wrong on the nametag. Either way I still have a lot of great memories from old MC and DanTDM. And although Dan wasn't the one who got me into Minecraft he did get me into mods. (Although it would take a long time before I'd actually figure out how modded MC works)

I sometimes wonder how Dan stayed friends with Trayaurus after every experiment that had gone wrong, and his subsequent punishments. Don't get it twisted, he's a brilliant mind and has made amazing inventions that have pushed Dan through the times for the better. I'm 22- 23 by the end of this year. I remember vividly those days when I would come home from school, and my first instinct was to hop on my dad's PC (and eventually my own), load up Internet Explorer, and check out what new adventures Dan and Dr. Trayaurus would get up to. They were a wonderful reprieve from the tedium that came with homework and overdue assignments. I've... frankly, never really been one to let myself be driven by nostalgia, but- just this once? I think I can leave that aside and just... remember, you know? Remember the fun of it all- the poor writing that always made us laugh, the wacky hijinks we'd get to witness first-hand. The ups and downs, highs and lows. Oftentimes it really felt like I was part of the adventure. The Lab and the many memories it holds, while diluted and a little worn around the edges by time, will always have a special place in my heart- right alongside Rendog's at this point utterly ancient original Survival series. Details may grow fuzzy over time, and things my fray a little around the seams, but... I doubt I'll ever forget.
