I consider Chemtrials and NFR the same as Folklore and Evermore by Taylor Swift. Idk why was it a problem that Chemtrials has some of the production of NFR, being the same producer... I think no one complained when Taylor released a sister album to Folklore sounding literally the same, and I don't know why they do complain about Chemtrials. NFR is my favorite by Lana and Chemtrials my second favorite. Those two are so beautiful, in their one way.
@EljohnMacaranas
@EljohnMacaranas Жыл бұрын
Oh Chemtrails definitely is her Evermore to NFR’s Folklore (I argue Folklore owes a lot to NFR despite being produced by Dessner who’s yet to work with Lana)
@lincolneads
@lincolneads 5 ай бұрын
I agree with you that NFR is my fav and chem trails second bc the production for both is so cool. I also agree it’s dumb to think something is automatically bad because it is similar production wise to a prior work. This being said, I think the biggest issue with comparing folklore and evermore to these albums is that they were presented as two separate entities. I’m not a swifty, but ik a decent amount about taylor through friends and family. This being said, Folklore and Evermore were clearly intended to be “sister albums” by their name, aesthetic presentation, and close release dates. This is not true with NFR and chemtrails. While they are very similar production wise, they had a year and a half between releases and she took a departure from her explicit Americana LA aesthetic to be more of a road-trip album imo. This along with all the controversy discussed in the video, AND the immense success of NFR, it was easy to paint this album as a lack-luster attempt to recapture the magic of NFR without committing to the idea. While I understand that these shouldn’t be compared directly and appreciate both as I said prior, that’s why I think it was so poorly received at the time.

@@EljohnMacaranas was there any chance you would do a video on Violets Bent Backwards? I have an unconventional opinion that its lana's second best work, I know its a poetry book but each poem is melodic while her pen game throughout is at her best not to mention the ties back to May Jailer in Sportcruiser, the question for the culture and the expectations on her as in American writer. I believe it to be one of her strongest contributions for what I hope one day is her receiving the Pulitzer in music

Love the little quotes around scandals like in hindsight it felt very minor and the only real reason it really spread like crazy was because people were stuck at home and wanted to start dumb drama. I’ve only been into Lana this year (I’ve only heard some of her singles before) and my first introduction to her music was NFR… months later, after listening to her entire discography, this, Chemtrails Over The Country Club, stood out the most too me. I love that this is her shortest album and the era alone was just something I’m a fan of. The music is just so cozy that it’s always my go to study music. Also, the simplicity>>> Although, I feel like I wouldn’t have loved this album so much, if I was a fan during the controversies around this. I didn't connect with this album at all when it was released, but then it grew on me. I don't think it's one of Lana's strongest works, but it does contain some career highlights (White Dress, the title track, Tulsa Jesus Freak and Yosemite). It's also a very cohesive album and a good picture of Lana's life at that time, and that makes it far superior to Blue Banisters imo, which although it has some good songs, I find it a very uneven album that seems piecemeal and not at all cohesive. Thanks for the video, I love your channel!! Looking forward to watch your Ocean Blvd review ❤

Wow I just discovered your channel and appreciate your thoughtful analysis of Lana’s body of work! Thanks for that! I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about COTCC, especially the title track, and I like that you highlighted the word “normalcy” which seems key to this song and the album as a whole. For me, the COTCC video added much needed visuals, in particular the vaporous “white picket”chemtrails that settle down on the people occupying the country club. Playing on the conspiracy theory that chemtrails are part of a government effort to control humans, Lana seems to equate the insidious Chemtrails with the American dream itself, which settles down over those mindlessly occupying and enjoying the country club. Yet we see that Lana-despite her exposure to the chemtrails-remains “strange and wild” to the point where she and her friends literally transform into wild wolves in the middle of the night. Lana is anything but “normal” and it seems like that mesh mask (symbolically) represents her ability to resist vaporous chemtrails and therefore the numbing banality of suburban life trapped within white picket fences?

I didn't listen to COCCK until like over a year after it was released cause all of the controversy coupled with the lackluster single at the time just soured me from giving the album the time of day. But it was also because NFR was just too frigging good and I was still pretty much listening to NFR daily at that time. Once everything died down my sister told me to give it a listen as there are good gems in there. While I didn't love everything on the first listen or even now. There are some really great songs in here too. I think looking back, taking my time away from the negativity and controversy helped me enjoy the album so much more now that I was away from it. It felt almost nostalgic listening to it like discovering your parents old records and cds.

Wild at heart, dark but just a game and natwwal are nfr! outtakes so maybe that’s why the album got so much criticism

Honestly those tracks are my favorite. Sure they do sound too much like NFR but I think we needed them!

I absolutely love this album but fuck it’s true blue banisters is just so much better and overshadowed it. I think it being short is perfect if it had any more songs it would of felt like a drag but it’s peaceful thanks to the fact that it only has a few songs

People will never be happy with Lana because they don't wanna be. She has the audacity to call forth uncomfortable ideas and discussions (abusive relationships, insecurity, depression, not being an assertive enough woman, etc). Things many of her critics can relate to and don't want to admit it to themselves. They want to relate to Beyonce's confidence and Taylor's safe feminism (no shade on them), not Lana, who isn't trying to be a role model or self insert for anyone.

I don’t know why but I can’t connect with Chemtrails at all besides the opener, White Dress. As the two albums that came out in 2021, BB resonates with me more.

BB was her more personal album of the two, she revealed in a Rolling Stone article she didn’t intend to release it so she didn’t promo it much!

cotcc was ok...my life would be perfectly fine if she had cherrypicked a few of those songs and crammed them on blue banisters

That’s fair, I think she dropped too much in 2021 like too much was going on for people to digest things!

being a lana fan during chemtrails/violet era was like going to war…no one was safe. we were all on the frontlines. chemtrails furthered the republican allegations. defense felt weak.

To be fair, BB Lana revealed recently in an Interview that it was never meant to be released she just put it out there into the world to get her thoughts out (hence it never getting promoted well and sorta was just dumped)

I kinda enjoy COTCC but it definitely not a favorite and its weak in some areas; but I agree with Blue Banister it was so uncohesive and none of the songs stuck with me, also with the album having so many outtakes it just didn’t feel put together

I actually liked blue banisters when it dropped. The tracks from Violet for Roses till Wildflower Wildfire are my fav. The beginning and end of BB are a lil forgettable
