Revisiting the "Joel is dead theory" for The Last of Us Part II

The very first big theory for The Last of Us Part II was the theory about Joel being dead or dying during the course of the story. It popped up as soon as only a few hours after the last of us part II psx2016 reveal trailer dropped. And to this day the theory about Joel being dead in The Last of Us Part II remains one of the most popular and discussed theories for the game. So I thought it was time to revisit it. Will Joel die in The Last of Us Part II?

Well, the last one I made about Joel potentially being dead or dying in the last of us part II was before even E3 2018, so I think it’s time that we go over it again revisiting old stuff as well as digging into all the new information that’s come out since then and try to figure out if Joel really will die in The Last of Us Part II!

Fun watching this now that part 2 has long been out. I love how Naughty Dog drops the most subtle hints that really encourage people to think and theorize. Some of the theories that people had seem so far off track now that we know, but at the time they were all perfectly viable.

That quote from Halley Gross is incorrect. She said people should be able to go into part 2 having never played part 1 and still feel like part 2 has a complete story, a beginning, middle, and end. She did not say that part 1 and 2 are supposed to feel like together they have a beginning, middle, and end. She was trying to drive home the point that they wanted to make this game a complete story on its own without letting the idea of a possible sequel influence where they went with the story.

I was watching both the PSX panels for this video and I think In one of them Neil says something along the lines of how part I and II form this larger story when he was explaining the reason it was called part II instead of just 2? I can’t remember exactly but I think that’s how I may have mixed it up.

Hey you actually took up that part with the Jacket that looked like Joel's :) Gotta say, those are pretty valid points you're making here. Especially your interpretation of the official blog post and the wording of "people who hurt the ones you love". This actually doesn't hint at anybody's death. In fact, something like sexual assault could have even more impact on the players and would deliver more complex story line. However, I just can't shake off the feeling that there's still gonna be at least one major death case at some point in the game. Whether it's gonna be Joel or someone else we, of course, just cannot know at this point. My bet's on Tommy if it's neither of the main protagonists. That would make the most sense as well. I will say that I think the reason Joel looks cleaner and healthier is because he's been living in a civilized area for some time now. He has food, can bathe, and if he's living at the settlement, he probably doesn't need to carry supplies around, since he'd just be keeping them at his home or wherever else he stays. It's possible that he decided he wanted to give Ellie the revolver as a sort of token/gift, or just in case the stray clicker wanders too close for comfort.

The first game tells you Joel is a brutal Survivor not just a survivor he does whatever it takes to survive. Ellie is a survivor but she is not as ruthless as Joel. Troy Baker the man that plays the voice of Joel even said that Joel is more villain then hero and that's what I think 2. Part 2 is just going to be a rollercoaster of not knowing what's going to happen

I know. If there’s anyone that could survive pretty much anything it’s Joel. His only weak spot is Ellie. So if he ends up dying I’m sure it’d be in the process of protecting her. As for him being the villain I always considered him more of an anti hero. But it’s of course also possible to interpret him as the villain too, especially with how he acts at the end of the first game.

I really don't want this to be what actually happens butI feel like Joel will be the one that dies. I don't think Dina dying would give Ellie as much rage as it would if Joel died. This would obviously the biggest and saddest death in the game just like it was in TLOU1 when Sarah died. The game 20 years later after Sarah's death though sort of gives back to Joel by giving him Ellie who he treats just like his own daughter. I feel like it'll be the same for Ellie ( I know Joel is a way more developed character than Sarah so they can't just replace him with somebody else) but the character that would "replace" Joel would need to have a huge impact on Ellie and I can't think of it being anyone else except her mother, Anna. The trailers of the mystery woman (Anna) aren't of a different timeline, they're of the same timeline as everything else in the game, she's probably just in a different city and we'll get to know more about her and where she's been as the game goes on.

Im not sure how this Game's Storyline is going. But one thing wonders me. Wasnt there the "Child thing" at some point in the speculations. That someone is "with child" in this game.. Now that could be very much related to this Revenge theme.. But like you said, i think this game quite much needs these main characters. As in its core this second game is too about Relationship of these two, Joel and Ellie. So.. Its quite hard to understand how that would work otherwise. I have a strong theory that this cult might be tied to the fireflies in some way and it seems the fireflies had decent strength toward the western side of the country especially considering salt lake city is not too far from Seattle. So they might be heard what Joel did to the fireflies even though they were responsible for his actions by being antagonistic toward him.

The seraphites have been confirmed to have been around since the outbreak. Still even if they were a part of or evolution of the fireflies I don’t see how it could’ve happened. The only similarities between them is the obsession with light/fire. But when it comes to actual ideology and motives they seem very different. The fireflies want to find a vaccine and restore democracy in America. But the seraphites seem almost anti technology and I doubt they have any interest in restoring America.

The fact is the naughty dog is making the game so realistic and so grounded that will it just makes sense that joel will eventually die because as real as these characters feel to me nothing would hurt me more playing as ellie and going on this revenge quest to avenge Joel's death and have a meaningful impact on the players as the story goes on. I also feel mystery woman was added for a reason and believe is to replace joel perhaps she is even the one to kill joel and towards the end after you have been a team with her ellie realizes she is the one all along and now you have to make a decision and that's why the hate theme or perhaps this is Dina's fault all along knowing that ellie is a bomb to go off and wants her separated from the town in order to capture her and create the so call vaccine after ellie reveals to dina that she is immune to the virus?.

Great video. I'm really excited for Last of Us 2. It would be dope if Joel dies (if he HAS to...but let's face it, he prolly will. He's pretty old) But it would be dope if he dies in some badass way, but he returns, like you said ,younger, in Ellie's mind. It's true i rather Joel turns out to be the villain instead of getting killed. Because the 2 core characters are what made this franchise successful and popular. Nothing more intriguing than seeing these 2 resulted in a twist from kinship to mortal enemies. That's where you see the split of 2 groups of ppl, who would be Team Ellie, and who would be Team Joel. Well Joel n Ellie’s relationship is the core of the story. At the end of part I they were as close as can be. So the only way to go with it in part II, at least initially is downhill. And yeah a “team Joel vs team Ellie” situation would probably even one up the ending of the first game and how divisive that was.

My new theory is that fire flies raped Ellie to get her pregnant with an immune child since they were hell bent on the success of the human race and they killed Dina because she was of no use to them because she was only used as bait and they partnered up with a few factions to get their numbers and gear back up and Ellie wants to kill everyone involved and those who stand in her way and sadly the WLF and Seraphites are apart of those who stand in her way and I truly hate to say it but I believe the main reason Ellie wants revenge is because the fire flies came back into her life ruining it because one main possibility is that she was raped

As for an ending with Joel and Ellie being the only survivors, I kind of like that idea. Maybe there's an all-out war with the Seraphites or WLF, and they storm Jackson, killing almost everyone there. Maybe this is the "cost" of Ellie's revenge.

Them killing joel will have an impact on Ellie but not the world they live in so it doesn't do much in the long run killing ellie on the other hand it impacts joel it gives a revenge story and rids the world of a cure for good and joel will have to come to terms with the fact he delayed the envedeble and saved Ellie from a heroic peaceful death and doomed her to a brutal meaningless one

Naughty dog knows that killing the younger and most capable character with the immunity would be a mistake for other entries in the series. I think killing joel and Sam would be really messed up because has lost so much and now it keeps happening and she can only blame herself for everything that has happened. Then again killing ellie would probably mean the end of the last of us at least for these 2 characters as joel would be too old to do anything beyond this is he even survives in a last attempt to save ellie again and they end up dying together after hating each other throughout the entire game just to realize they could live without one another like father and daughter.

I don't think Joel is dead. Him being dead would make the game a bit similar to Batman: Arkham Knight. Naughty Dog is far more complex then this. I think that the end of part 1 was the point where Ellie and Joel's relationship fractures. That's from where the story will continue. Maybe we will see their relationship being rebuilt but I think realistically in a normal life that won't happen.

Before the trailer where they falsely advertised the game, everyone expected him to die but no one expected it to be that disrespectful and dumb. I guess they just wanted it to be shocking. I thought that you would play as Ellie and with Joel as your side character and then at the end of them game you find out that Joel was dead the whole time and a figment of Ellie's imagination. I really went into TLOU2 wanting to like it and I managed to avoid spoilers. But I had to force myself to finish the game. It just shows that if the Story is not compelling to you, the rest of the game won't be able to carry it. And the game drags out for way too long. I love the gameplay but 25 to 30 hours of the same thing makes it feel way longer than it actually is.

Simple the only way to kill a franchise, is kill off either one of these 2, or both. But killing them off just for shock factor, Naughty Dog needs to rethink whether the corporate decision is a wise one. After all millions of dollars revenue as come from these franchise, killing either Ellie or Joel would be the stupidest corporate decision ever made, where they had a good thing going, yet letting it slip from their hands. Lol Let's hope the extension of release date will help refine the storyline and tweaking of character plot lines, which I suspect reasons for so is the last minute changes because knowing the initial story ending for Part 2 will not sit well with general audience. Hence the extension of release date imo. Lol

I dont think joel is going to die as it wouldnt make sense. They never intended to make tlou2 and definately wouldnt have if either joel or ellie died. They prolly decided not to make tlou3 but if they kill ellie or joel the option becomes no longer available as they are the franchise. No company that has any clue about business would kill a franchise with no possibility of return on a profitable franchise its business suicide. They may decide atm no tlou3 but will give themselves the viability should they change their mind.

Yeah that was why I was so certain neither Joel nor Ellie would die before. Though I’m not too sure about a possible part iii anymore which is why I’m uncertain about Joel’s fate.

I’ve seen people theorising that it’s Joel because of the hands looking kinda old. But there’s no shot you can actually see if it is Joel or Ellie to my knowledge. And personally I doubt that they got matching tattoos but who knows, we haven’t seen Joel’s bare arms yet.

Yeah I know. That was my main argument before. Though I’m not so sure there will necessarily be a part III anymore. Doesn’t mean there can’t be more tlou games though, maybe a prequel or spinoff with one of the characters. Though I’d still very much prefer both of them to survive
