Windows 8 was my childhood. My old Toshiba Satellite C850-B990 came with Windows 8 Home Single Language and I remembered being a huge fan of the design. Even though it looks more of like a OS for tablets. When you are on the "Desktop" mode, you can do all of your desktop apps. I didn't even hate the start menu because of how beautiful it was. It was more colorful and less bland compared to say windows 10. I only upgraded to Windows 10 in mid 2020 when I could finally format my family's laptop but dang I took a while in windows 8.

Windows 10 to Windows 8/8.1 was almost what Windows 7 was to Windows Vista. The this is Windows 10 isn't much better OS and with Windows 11 failing people switched to "perhaps we judged you harshly, Windows 10". I personally never switched to Windows 8. I had too much good time with Windows 7 and had to reluctantly upgrade to Windows 10. When I actually used Windows 8, I couldn't really find words to describe how horrible it was. Now thanks to Linux and MacOS I can. Windows 8 UI couldn't work because of Windows legacy stuff. Like say we install some programs and they create a bunch of folders with with even sub-folders in them. It was okay during Win95/XP times, but by Windows 7 it was tedious at best. At least the UI was designed around it. Not so much with all those giant icons. What it should've been is simple program icon to execute programs from start menu, if you don't like clutter desktop with program icons. This is where GNOME or MacOS UI made it easy to manage and navigate even back when Windows 8 was still in active development. The experience of install Windows programs can recreated using WINE and you will have a mess of folders and icons to manage. Even today Windows 11 is using similar idea, but it's still limited by remnants of older Windows releases, specifically Windows 95. As for portable devices I tried using Windows 8 and 8.1 with few different tablet devices and almost all of them had the similar problems. My main problem was the UI. It was too small to manage by comfortably. Windows 8.1 was a little easier for having start button at least, but in general if device doesn't have large screen or attachable touchpad or mouse, you will have troubles navigating small menus and even smaller icons. One thing I should point out is, that I didn't use tablets long enough to see if there was settings to enhance the experience.

Not to mention, I recall when Windows 8 was new, my laptop would constantly suffer from drivers (mostly audio) just randomly breaking, forcing me to sometimes unplug and plug the headset in, or even having to restart the drivers for it to work again. Once I upgraded to Windows 10, the problem is vanished. So on top of the UI being clunky and annoying for mouse and keyboard, I didn't like how buggy some drivers felt with it
@random_person618
@random_person618 Ай бұрын
That's the OEM's fault for not releasing proper drivers. This was cause of 95% of crashes in Vista too, except a few bugs here and there which are totally expected after the release of any new, heavily reworked OS. My HP laptop, came with Windows 8 and had all the proper drivers and worked beautifully.

@@-coal tldr: I wanted to try other version of windows that I haven't really had a chance to use. The following is a way too long unnecessary story but I can't shut up cause I'm too tired at the moment. Windows 8 just kinda broke on me and didn't load outside of the safe mode and I had no idea what caused it, so not having access to my only pc and only having a stick with ZorinOS which I just heard about and wanted to test out in liveUSB mode, for a couple of months I was using that system but the fact that it was getting slow and unstable as the session time grows I wanted to go back to windows, I've tried installing Windows 10 and it just got stuck at around 80% every time I tried it. I didn't have much choice already but I decided to go with 7 since I have never really used it anywhere before, I had a good time with it, it's not that different from 8 as well, missed some metro apps but liked how system was even easier to visually customize it, after some time trying out different looks ended up with just a clean modern looking design without anything overloading it, loved gadgets as well. Eventually I also had a problem with 7, Nvidia graphics bugged out after update and basically I lost ability to play most games with just integrated HD4000 graphics. For about a year I once again switched to the ZorinOS but as a dualboot system so I had access to windows of I need it, eventually I found a way to solve the driver problem by using 3rd party app of a sort, but at this point windows 10 got the big update with light theme and stuff and I tried installing it once again which finally succeeded and I've been using that for 2 years before getting a new laptop with Windows 11 this year.

i mean it looked cool, but to me it was really not functional, for example, how idiotic is it that you dont even have a taskbar at the bottom, and have to either alt+tab, or go all the way to the right corner just to click the windows button. Also it was very annoying that they basically were trying to force you to use all of their shit apps, like windows store, windows explorer, and a whole lot bunch of other maps where you had to log in at the start. All of these apps were shown in the tiles, so they were really trying to force us into using their stuff

@@ukaszczyzak8971 I am actually starting to get why people couldn't use it because they couldn't figure it out. I loved 8.0, and that is coming from someone who knew all the controls and did not have a touchscreen device.

It was much more aesthetics focused and touch screen focused but it was not easy to switch to. It was already reaching a time when a lot of UI elements were slowly getting part of human intuition. Seeing an image of floppy disk being a save icon is a classic example. A week ago, I moved from windows 11 to a Mac. I was expecting a lot of confusions from the very beginning since it's a completely different OS but nope, it was a very smooth transition. It was soo smooth and soo intuitive that I started feeling like Windows 10&11 are still kinda lacking 😅. Obviously there are things like apps not closing unless you do some things or the maximize button just making the app full screen, but it's still super intuitive and has a lot of consistencies with Android and Linux that I was kinda used to. And I think windows is also moving to that direction... Start menu in the middle, control panel in a corner and easy multitasking on this Desktop that is like notice board where we work with different apps. There is a lot of intuition associated with it. Yes mac doesn't have a start menu but the application menu layout is still pretty solid and when multitasking, those apps are in the taskbar, just like windows. (Or the recent apps in android 😮) Basically what I'm trying to say is, there is a design language among tech products that's getting increasingly more standardised because of yhe familiarities. Changing your design language soo drastically into an unfamiliar territory is just never gonna work. You can no longer just make a new UI design and actually revolutionize the industry EVEN IF the design is objectively more efficient and cooler looking.

*Fun fact:* There is actually an earlier version of Microsoft Store named Windows Marketplace, which was released in 2004. It really didn't come with Windows itself unlike Microsoft Store, as you would access it via a web browser instead. But in terms of functionality, it pretty much did the same thing as Microsoft Store does nowadays (like downloading apps, utilities, games and stuff). It got fully discontinued around 2012, eventually evolving into Microsoft Store integrated in Windows 8.

At that time, I upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 to the newly released Windows 8. Unfortunately, most of the drivers and software that worked well on Windows 7 crashed on Windows 8. It was a difficult period due to the lack of resources on forums and communities which I cannot find enough solutions to fix those drivers and softwares. However, Microsoft later enhanced Windows 8 and released Windows 8.1, which supported drivers and software from Windows 7. Sadly, by then, many users, including myself, were already dissatisfied with Windows 8 and had decided to revert to Windows 7. My opinion, Windows 8 and 8.1 were great, but those OS came out too fast. Microsoft made the similar mistake as Windows Vista.

What I did is purchase a real copy on Windows 8.1... Terribly expensive now as it's basically a collectors item. I used ImgBurn to rip the ISO, make a text file of the activation code and just sell it of while I use Rufus to format a USB to GPT/UEFI. That was my big problem with disc installations, DVDs are MBR by default negating the ability to access passed 2.2TB of storage capacity when I have a 4TB drive just waiting to be used. Not to mention my Sandisk Extreme V2 is also 4TB. I needed GPT on this explicitly for that purpose.

Just to clarify - I do think that Windows 8 during its release was insanely stupid in terms of navigation, but with "service pack" 8.1 they actually found the sweet spot between maintaining both good desktop and touchscreen experience. The main problem was that there was no apps for metro UI, so it became useless over time. My biggest dream back in the day was to use metro UI with only a controller (after all it was very similar to xbox UI) and to have a steam written for metro UI. This would be perfect solution when plugging laptop or desktop to TV. There was a lot of potential in that system and that's why I admire it so much.

Especially in the early days of Windows 8, it felt as if the desktop was its own app and no longer the main Windows screen. Luckily, that changed with Windows 8.1, like many other things, and it became an "okay" operating system. But I was happy when I finally had a normal interface again with Windows 10.

I love how this video was meant to throw loads of hate on windows 8 and most comments are positive. Windows 8 and 8.1 were the most attractive, fun and fast OS by Microsoft. People complaining about using it, just refused to spend 15 to 30 minutes consciously getting used to the new interface, that's all. I loved that MS era

It was smooth and i feel better than windows 7 but just some people didn't liked the change and same happened with the windows 11. People doesn't like change even if it's better.

Nah, I liked 8 and 8.1. They were alright. I'd choose em over 10 and 11 any given day.

I remember these days standing in Best Buy looking to buy a laptop today, seeing all of the new Windows 8 junk, I just laughed and walked away with a new Windows 7 pro laptop. I just refused to use windows 8 such a let down by Microsoft.

It took me about 5 minutes to get used to Windows 8.1 and it is still my favourite OS till date. If only it had a lock screen like Windows 10, the clipboard and the new file explorer and notepad from Windows 11, I would still use it today. Workarounds are not really great

When Windows 8 (and then 8.1) first came out, I ABSOLUTELY love the looks of it, and still to this day. I know it's a little bit janky in terms of performance, consistency, etc, but the Tiles concept was gorgeous. And the mobile Windows OS that came with Lumia at that time was so cool. Never daily driven Win 8 till this day tho, just trying out on my friends computer. But planning to install 8.1 on my secondary laptop.

Being a computer technician for over 20 years. I assure you Windows 8.1 is one of the best OS Microsoft can offer till date. This is just a mass hysteria. Due to a random famous guy's lack of knowledge on how to use it, people were led to believe it was bad. Despite being a superior Operating system, Windows 8.1 is taking a beating. Software developers and hardware manufacturers are forcing us to abandon Windows 8.1, which is not fair. If software and OS updates are not halted, Windows 8.1 is sufficient for eternity, no need 10, 11 or 12 etc. at all. I can achieve 1 to 3 second start up or boot up to desktop only in 8.1. Tips: Just install Startisback to bring get back classic start menu.

If you don't know, windows 10 had a mode with an interface optimized for touchscreens, which was heavily inspired by windows 8.

That interface was perfect for big touchscreens. I hope someone can copy the metro UI and adapt it to android. It would give android tablets another level that even iPadOS doesn't have.

I remember we installed this OS in my friend's computer and once it was done, we were just confused, we didn't know what the fuck we were looking at. It looked so different from Windows 7 and I don't even think we made it past the start menu with all the tiles. We instantly reinstalled Windows 7 back.

Hey surfshark! I know this video is 3 months old but you don't actually need a windows 8 tab to use windows on tablets just plug an android tab to windows via spacedesk (connect pc with tablet via USB cable) and use it as a windows tablet! I actually use windows 10 on my android tab and touch gestures actually work! And virtual keyboard of windows also pops up automatically!hope this helps and waiting for next video of windows 8 or 8.1!
