Here's a brilliant idea for a screenplay- Toxic guy gets rejected by a woman that he fixates on, and starts writing her letters every day. She never replies, and over time the man starts using the letters to examine his own behaviour, thoughts, and choices, essentially acting as therapy for him, and when the post office one day returns a massive amount of letters to him that went to a dead address (the woman moved years ago), he realizes how far he's come, and that it wasn't the idea of this woman he needed, but rather self love and self examination.

I always thought that this movie was vastly overrated, and inferior to "A Walk to Remember." Noah threatens to fling himself off the ferris wheel if Allie rejects him, thus scarring her for life. But we're meant to think that it's a "charming" gesture, because he's the male protagonist. Allie's no better herself, since she cheats on her perfectly nice fiancé with her ex, even though there's nothing wrong with their relationship.

Doesn’t matter that they fall for the bet subject eventually, the idea that they would do that to me would make me end any potential relationship immediately.

Your conclusion resonated with me. When I was younger I used to believe everything needs to be larger than life, like it is in movies. conversations have to resemble the ridiculous banter and the more dramatic a relationship is, the bigger and more true the love. Of course when we grow up we thankfully learn to separate our lives from the portrayals of life in literature and media and then look back at these movies and become horrified at how unromantic the romance really was in some, and how thrilling the "boring" parts are in others. I think you summed this up nicely. I’ve never seen the romance of this film as stemming from the many very problematic actions and decisions the characters make in their story, but from the idea that these two obviously flawed people had such a strong love that their relationship went the distance beyond the immaturity of their youth and on into a lifelong commitment of love to each other. We see them have a passionate but hot mess of a start, but instead of having that fire sputter out like you would expect it is implied it grew into the steady, strong, and mature love we see at the end. We only see the start and the end of their lifelong relationship, but what makes so romantic is the implication of all that must have happened in between for them to have gotten from point A to B. That despite all initial red flags and people telling them it couldn’t work, that they actually did have the foundation and compatibility they needed for the relationship to sustain and survive.

I think the way they constantly fight is dysfunctional and I don’t like the way it was romanticized, but she saw it as passionate 🤢 and thought the relationship with the other guy was boring. I stand with what I said but it does make me wonder about what passion is and to what degree is it important it is in a relationship.
@kodidelaney96083 жыл бұрын
People think that passion has to be loud and even dysfunctional in order for it to be passion. But the real kind of passion is gentle and kind. On my second date with my now husband I talked about a book I was currently reading and how I was so excited to order the second. We had dinner that evening together and he gifted me the second book in the series "so I wouldn't have to wait when I finished the first" and that simple gesture had more passion in it than The Notebook. Passion also doesn't also need to be directed at the other person. My husband and I are both very passionate people and because of that we're very supportive of each others interests and dreams, rather than just the person in general. Passion is a whisper not a shout.

I've heard similar reactions to Allie's relationship with Lon as well. They always say that he's boring, but we see him be supportive, loyal, and even encourage Allie to do what she wants to do (like paint). He even has a good job that would provide for the rest of their lives, not to mention that he is good looking. But people tend to think that a relationship should be exciting and fun, which is why films like The Notebook always have these passionate fights and high emotions. And sure, relationships will have arguments and disagreements, but they shouldn't crossover into shouting matches. Take two scenes that involve Noah and Lon. In one, Noah and Allie are straight up yelling and shouting insults at each other. In another, Lon is confronting Allie about her infidelity, but he never yells or raises his voice. Sure, he does let out that he is angry but in a way that is more controlled. And while he does let Allie off the hook too much, since she did cheat on him, he tries to help her in seeing the path forward for herself. Lon is the definition of a good man, someone who would make a great husband and partner in life with someone, but yet women in real life say he is boring because he doesn't make things interesting or fun.

I don't believe in soulmates, but I believe in "having chemistry" and deep understanding (and being young and somewhat naive have a little bit to do with it). The thing is, I think you can have amazing chemistry with someone (and it's usually something very obvious to everyone, almost as if you would expect to see sparks flying around those two people who have that special chemistry, that deeper bond or understanding of each other) and at the same time, that relationship can be toxic, unhealthy and complicated. Both things can be true. There's something tragic in it, some kind of irony, but that's life. In fact, I think people with this kind of chemistry don't usually end up together and that's perfectly fine. As we grow older, we start prioritizing and valuing different things such as affection, peace, respect, maturity, stability, commitment, etc. I like how their mature love is portrayed. The movie is supposed to be the representation of a "summer teenage love" or "first love": immaturity and intensity are usually the main features of these teenage relationships. But then it was possible for THEM to make it work and to mature and evolve in that relationship. That's the rarity, in my opinion.

YES, THANK YOU SOMEONE FINALY SAID IT! I tried explaining to my mother (who loves this movie) that the relationship was HORRIFICALLY unhealthy. It started with a suicide threat for a girl he didn’t even know It ended with a lady who used to be strong enough to stick up for herself and say no to a suitor who was goddamn relentless… leaving her soon to be husband who didn’t do anything wrong for the guy who she had kinda sex with ONCE When she was 17. There isn’t a single thing that is healthy about the relationship, the movie states that the two of them always fight, it shows that she was not afraid to hit him when she got pissed at him. He is very… pushy… with her. One of the notes said something along the lines of “I wont be mad or anything if you meet another guy” When he WAS mad and trying to prevent her from leaving when she wanted to drive home. Now for my pointless notes: Allie was ruined, Noah was toxic, the mom technically committed a crime by stealing all the letters, the father looks like a villain from a Superman comic, and WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO ANY OF ALLIES FRIENDS?? We see for the first section of the movie and then never again- WHERE DID THEY GO?? THEY ARENT EVEN MENTIONED- Also,… I feel bad for the poor lady who lost her husband in the war, she was living with a man who saw her as nothing more than a tool to get over someone who he thought was better. I kind of hope that she gets with Lon… Fuck Noah… All my homies hate Noah

The Notebook is one of those stories where the characters being high-key toxic actually grounds the plot, if that makes sense. Because in the movie both Noah and Allie are kinda freaks who argue all the time so maybe they deserve each other as long as it keeps them both off the market, but in the book Noah and Allie seem like fairly normal (if a bit boring) characters who are capable of rational thought so them hooking up while they both know Allie's engaged comes off as a kind of messy that's not so fun to read about. It seems that these character's ability to have a normal non-screaming conversation only comes up when they feel like it.

When Allie does remember for little bit, it makes cry only because my grandpa has Alzheimer’s and the scene hit a little too close to home. It had nothing to do with the portrayal of their relationship.

as a nickolous sparks nerd i do agree that the young allile and Noah relationship hasn't age well. I will say it wldve been interesting if allie ends up with neither and just wants 2 be a painter since that sounds empowering enough.

God this movie! It has very strong ties to my first real love. When I said we were unhealthy like they were I mean god damn . We watched this movie and thought it was sweet cause it was “so much like us”. GAG!!!

Apparently the story in the notebook is based on Sparks’s ex-wife’s grandparents love story

Nicolas Sparks may not be a great writer, but he knows how to have profound moments of love. I think of Noah talking about how he's had love and that's what made his life full, or in A Walk To Remember with "our love is like the wind, I can't see if but I can feel it." It's cheesy, but it's pure. His movies are always better than the books because we get to see actual people and nuance in them. But you want to talk about a mature kind of love--Nights In Rodanthe. That is his most underrated story. The book is agonizing to read, naturally, but the movie is well done (for a Nicolas Sparks movie at least, don't expect high level production).

I like The Notebook for the visual stuff but I always thought the relationship wasn’t that great (even though I love romance). I always thought Allie and the guy she was engaged to had more chemistry for some reason

I only ever saw this movie bc my cousins put it on while I was at their house lmao. I was only 11 so I’m glad I got this rinsed out of my mind for the superior Pride & Prejudice storyline, (both the book and movie version.) solid breakdown!

To be fair, in the 40’s it would have been difficult if not impossible to be a wife and also an artist with anyone. Being free wasn’t an option if you also wanted a family. We don’t see their lives play out but his appreciation of her probably comes from the work she had to have done as a wife and mother. My husband and I have been together for decades. It has always been a close bond but as we’ve gotten older, he appreciates me more and more and I him. It’s the challenges you overcome as a team that create that kind of love in the end. I love this movie because I know that it may be over the top but it’s a reality too for some.

It's interesting how unromantic this kind of behavior becomes as you get older. When I was younger, toxicity seemed so romantic lol. What are we teaching kids?

The way Noah manipulates Allie into laying on the road with him is insanely creepy. He convinces her if she does what he wants, that she’s really doing what she wants. But if he really wanted her to do what she wants, he’d let her walk away

It is barely related to the subject of the video, but I suggest “Ever After” to my fellow romcom watchers when it comes to romantic movies that still satisfies IMO Also, did James Marsden get done dirty in the end of that other Nicholas Sparks movie he was the lead in? I do not remember the movie but I think I remember the ending and it was not happy for the poor guy.

Yes! James Marsden plays the older version of the male lead in the Best of Me and ends up getting shot at the end. The only "happy" thing about the end is that he's an organ donor and provides essential organs for the female lead's son (who is also near death apparently? It's been a while since I watched it).

I read the book years after I first saw the movie and while I was a little disappointed with the book the whole way through, the ending made me legitimately angry. The movie ending is so sweet and perfectly corny. If the movie was only about their youth, it would be just another romance, but their old selves really MAKE this movie what it is.

I'm with you. I don't subscribe to the whole notion of soulmates or any one partner being the only one or whatever and it irks me to no end when I see characters like James Marsden's get used and cast aside the moment they outlive their usefulness. Like, I don't care if it's a love story, if you introduce a character, I want some sort of closure on them, and I hate seeing some nice character get trampled on to perpetuate some (usually toxic and shitty) more popular relationship. And I especially hate it when a character's relationship with a romantic partner is developed only to shove them aside whenever some main character decides to get off their ass and go after one of them. It's not cute, it's not romantic, I don't buy that it's real love or whatever, it's just shitty and it happens so much in tv shows and I hate it. Nothing worse than Pretty Little Liars developing a relationship between Emily and Paige on and off over SEVEN SEASONS only to pull a pregnancy put of their asses that separates them and forces Emily to be with Alison less than half a season away from the finale. Their split in the spin off was the most rational and realistic thing to happen to them. But to add salt to injury we get the showrunner enabling and curling their shippers and throwing out bullshit about how she would totally have got them back together if they got more seasons in order to get them to try and get them more episodes for their shitty spinoff show.

After reading nearly all there is about Ryan Gosling and reading the book, he and Noah are both nearly hopeless romantics and the author might has well been using Gosling as his model.
