Honestly, who cares about it anymore. This „mystery“, along with many others, has become so „intriguing“ because everything on Feast and Dance ends on cliffhangers and George takes forever to release Winds, so we desperately want more and everyone makes theories on things that in the end will not be a big deal. I actually didn‘t pick that up on my firt read of Dance; what actually surprised me was Jon‘s reaction, that I find out of character. Dany’s twist in the show caused a lot of drama, but George can be pretty lame when it comes to plot twists. There’s some instances in the books where people turn on a dime and do things that are there only for plot sake.

George was thinking the show would satisfy you angry book readers by providing a live action conclusion to the series..He is totally pissed off at the negative feedback the final season brought..As far as he is concerned you will just have to be satisfied with the conclusion and accept its over..George isn't going to waste another day writing books with all the multi million TV deals rolling in..Who needs Winds of Winter or A Dream of Spring when you can have Dunk and Egg..

I love anti-theories that are tailor-made to shut down popular theories or render them irrelevant. For example, I love the theory that Viserys II really did die as a child and the young man who was ransomed back from Lys was an impostor. Since all book-era Targaryens are descended from him, this would mean that nobody is a secret Targaryen because the family has been extinct for over a century.

@@iliaponomarev1624 There are lots of people with Valyrian blood in the Free Cities, especially among the ruling classes. If the Rogare family did just recruit a boy of the right age with a Valyrian look, they had plenty to choose from. Which ties into the heart of the fact that characters and fans alike love to ignore or deny: House Targaryen is not important. They simply do not matter and the world can keep turning just as easily after the last one dies, something that may in fact already have happened.

It's obviously Allar Deem as he begins his revenge quest against all the POV characters for being cut so early in the series and not being given a second thought. Turning Allar Deem into a shock villain with a vendetta against the reach main characters was a bold move on George's part, but I think it some excellent longterm storytelling.

I disagree. I thought the catspaw mystery was great. Joffrey is cruel and stupid and he looks up to his "dad" Robert Baratheon. King Robert casually suggested putting Bran out of his misery one night in Winterfell, so Joffrey did a cruel stupid thing. It's perfect for two reasons: 1) It goes along perfectly with the theme of Robert Baratheon and Ned Starks conflict over killing children. Stark and Baratheon fought over the murder of Rhaegar's children. Ned worries that his own children could be killed similarly. And now Robert's pattern of supporting killing children directly impacts Ned! Not to mention the foreshadowing of the direwolf being stabbed by the stag in the first chapter 2) The way it's revealed in Tyrion's story in ASOS. Joffrey is becoming more and more dangerous as he gets older and more comfortable in power (he even challenges Tywin). He becomes increasingly hostile and menacing towards Tyrion. When Tyrion exposes to Joffrey that he knows about the catspaw/Bran, it increases this tension even more, making it seem that Tyrion will be killed to silence him. This makes the purple wedding even more exciting because it comes at the perfect time when the tension peaks

I basically agree, Joffrey’s a cruel moron, it makes complete sense that he would do that. I do agree with Jacobs that’s the way Tyrion reaches that conclusion is off and he’s misremembering Joffrey’s specific words, but the conclusion itself works well enough for me at least. Also I would agree the mystery and answer to who killed Jon Arryn was handled better by comparison, but overall I think Joffrey did it and it’s a perfectly fine answer.

Thank you! It's always been my favourite theory that the Pink Letter was in fact written by Ramsay (it's mostly lies, but still penned by Ramsay). Then again, I always wanted Jon Snow to be the child of Eddard because it would actually be a subversion for it to turn out to be exactly who it was stated to be (which I suppose could still happen, but it's pretty unlikely).

Probably so, but -- perhaps for the best of all -- GRRM doesn't show us _every_ minute in the life of Joffrey Baratheon. So it's also quite possible that he bragged about this 'off-screen', and we just didn't see it specifically. :P

Mance wrote it. Melisandre edited it, added in things to make it seem to Jon that Ramsey wrote it. She told Jon on a number of occasions that a crow (I meant a Raven) would be delivering a massage for him. And the point of sending Mance (whom she glamoured) was not only to find out about Stannis and what was happening in Winterfell, but also to gain Jon’s attention and trust. Making it sound Jon’s “sister” was on the run from Ramsey and that there was nothing between him and her and the Wall, overusing Jon’s trigger word was a sure fire way to get Jon involved and looking to her for more, and maybe help her Azor Ahai…. It would also remove the blinding light of Jon from her visions if he proved to be a fool about it, as her visions hinted at. But, PJ’s point that Martin didn’t want to write himself into a corner and so left things ambiguous has a lot of merit.

I mean; 1 - She has access. 2 - The know how. 3 - The motive. 4 - Specifically warns Jon to be expecting the letter, the contents of which she had been using to try to win over Jon with. 5 - She is known known to be skilled in the arts of illusion, deception and manipulation. The wax stamp is meant to protect the authenticity of the message. Ramsey would’ve had access to both the wax and the stamp. Yet the wax on Pink Letter is smeared. ei, It was sealed with the Bolton pink wax, but without the Bolton stamp. You can change wax colors, but the stamps were unique. Meaning, the contents of the message and it’s writer should be in doubt. Though it could just be that Clydas opened the letter to see whom it should be addressed to. Jon, the Queen Selyze or Melisandre. And then resealed it. But then that calls him into question. And know one brings him up either. And yet Clydas is the only known person to hold the letter before handing it to Jon.

For all we know, he disliked and feared Jon and this was his part in an assassination plot, or he was forced to deliver the message to Jon by threat to his life or he was shaking and seemed unsteady from the effects of some drug or poison or nothing, that Clydas’ part in this was just as it seemed, a Raven delivered the message, he took it to Jon and was unnerved by what was written on the cover. I’m not really concerned with how it was done, rather by who could’ve done it. Personally, I think that either Ramsey or Mance wrote it, but it was altered either by Mance (if it was written by Ramsey) or Melisandre before Clydas got a hold of it, and then Clydas opened and resealed it so that he knew whom to bring it to if anyone (could’ve been their equivalent of junk mail trying to get them to buy some snake oil cure for whatever or with the way it was addressed perhaps it was some kid’s prank).

My issue with the who Pink Letter theory is there are two reasons why people are suspicious, the lack of flesh and the crows terminology. Aside from those two instances it seems to be pretty Ramsay. At least in my book, the letter is written after the battle on ice, where Ramsay looses so he is basically asking for hostages for some form of leverage. If that's the case, most things fall into place as he'd know all the other information by torturing the wildings.

Jaime thinks about the dagger multiple times throughout his POV chapters and tries to puzzle it out himself for a long time before he and Tyrion come to the conclusion that it was Joffrey. That doesn’t mean it’s Joffrey but it pretty well rules out Jaime.

I had the idea that maybe it was originally Ramsey that wrote the letter, but that Mance intercepted it in the raven roost or the maester’s quarters. Then Mance used Ramsey’s letter as a template, but rewrote it with his own additions, in order to get Jon to bring Val and the Wildlings. The bastardized bastard letter.

Regarding Joffrey. The only way that makes sense. Is that sometimes people do stupid shit for stupid reasons and in real time its seldom some plot point behind it. And it would be a grrm thing to include that sort of stuff. A kid with no ability to think of consequeses and nothing more. Im not super convinced it was joff tho. Im not even sure it was not cat that was the target. But I read that page 1000 times and its not clear at all what the cut throat is saying really. Maybe he meant "noone supposed to be here" meant cat was supposed to go to kings landning.

It has an ominous aura to Jon but the other guy is barely keeping his shit together. I think it fits the evidence well, but it only adds a new mystery in what the original letter said.

I think that for the catspaw, it definitely makes the most sense for Littlefinger to have done it. I think the whole Tyrion suspecting Joffrey thing to be intentionally bad logic on Tyrion’s part, although that raises the question as to why it’s included at all. Maybe I’m giving too much credit to George, but it seems to make so much more sense for it to be Littlefinger. Also, I know the show isn’t canon, but if I remember correctly the show implies, if not flat out reveals, that it was Littlefinger who sent the catspaw and the Joffrey thing was never even mentioned. Maybe they had some inside knowledge from George and decided to drop the mystery in the show and reveal it outright. Idk, Joffrey just feels so bizarre and like he has no real motivation to do this. The only logic is that “only an idiot would send a valyrian dagger to assassinate someone, it must be Joff because he’s too young and dumb to tell the difference.” I think it’s way more likely that it’s an intentional framing done by someone like Littlefinger (or maybe Mance, although this seems less plausible to me).

It could be the revelation that drives a wedge between Sansa and Littlefinger if he ends up being the culprit, especially after/if Bran becomes the Three eyed crow (assuming we ever see the end of the series).

Is it copepium to say that George never intended to finish the books but to get as far as possible where he could without writing himself to a box. Creating this world, planting seeds everywhere so others could make different versions of the story and finishing those versions without writing themselves into a box? *Inhales b0ng*

Haha no I do think he originally intended to finish, but then wrote himself into a corner and got stuck and had no idea where to go after _Dance_ , so then luckily the TV show came along and gave him an excuse to be "too busy" on a million other projects, then there was the ferocious backlash to how the TV show ended (and what we saw on TV might well be loosely what he actually had in mind), so at this stage he's just done with the whole thing and has no motivation left to try and finish the main story, being content to tinker around with worldbuilding and histories etc.

The important bit here for timing is this.. Battle is happening. Stannis needs Melisandre to do X to win the battle. Melisandre convinces Selyse to give her Shireen to do X to win battle. Melisandre doesn't do X, she revives Jon. Selyse realizes she gave up her daughter's life for nothing and hangs herself. Pink Letter's meaning is that Ramsay has killed Roose, because Roose would never let him write that. Ramsay is being delusional and he didn't win a battle he won an early skirmish.

Also... Authors, especially ones like G.R.R. Martin, can make some REALLY shitty choices as well....../cough... the RED WEDDING.... And do things that, in more REASONABLE Authors situation/story they would not do..... Not that many Authors, in my opinion, like to kill off their main Characters to that much of an extent.

George's main characters are Jon, Dany, Tyrion, Arya, Bran and maybe Sansa. You can consider Eddard the main character of AGOT, so he actually just killed two of them. And Jon may come back later
