Engineers went to the trouble of designing a choke into carburetors, the purpose of which is to enrich the air/fuel ratio for cold starting. (If the car last ran yesterday, let alone decades ago, it's a cold start, needing the choke.) The idea is to close the choke before cranking. This Buick has an automatic choke, which seems to be stuck wide open, not able to do its job. Manually closing it will save a lot of cranking, and get it running sooner.

i think hiding indoors for 10 of the 30 years really helped keep it in good condition!
