I think what strikes me most about Japanese carpentry is how clean, square, and well milled their framing lumber is. Complete opposite of what its like in the states.

This is beautiful. As a carpenter of 20+ years in America, seeing the pride and talent of artisans from Asia blows my mind. The patience, the quality, it all impresses me every time I see it. I do hope that we never lose this. I know it’ll slowly go away, but… there is something so beautiful about this kind of craftsmanship.

@shoyan: for the pencil mark i use a simple trick. Painters tape, it is smooth, thin and does not leave glue residue on the wood. Measure the height, stick some tape and mark the area with the pencil. Once cut out from the wood remove the tape and you don't need to worry about pencil marks. If you calculate the cost of the tape vs time/materials it takes to erase a pencil mark it is a break even and it makes the job nicer.

I'd really enjoy working with you. Your appreciation of crafts and processes and thinking about how things will be used is how I like to work. The question I have though is that the counter is installed by a sunny window and it's made of 2 or more planks. It is screwed firm into the framing at either end. How will that cope with changes in temperature and humidity? Would it not tend to split in summer as it dries and shrinks?

Your extremely high skill level, your depth of understanding & the knowledge of the tools & materials you work with are absolutely brilliant to watch & listen to Shoyan. I have been using the Pentel mechanical pencils for four decades. They can be had in .5mm to .9mm for the P200 series. As long as they are not dropped or abused they will last for years! Also, there is a stunning amount of different lead available for them. Here in the states they are around $7.00 dollars. There in Japan where they are made I doubt they would be more than 1000 Yen. Love these . Your videos are the best! Love the detail and the craftsmanship on display in every one you put up. Thanks so much for sharing.

Such beautiful workmanship, I don't always understand the building technique, but it's so interesting to see it accomplished !!!
@TacComControl15 күн бұрын
We would always sharpen our pencils on the worksite with xacto knives. Mainly because we used flat carpenter's pencils. Which are great because if you drop them, they don't roll away, and if for some reason one is on the floor and someone steps on it, it's less likely to make them slip by rolling. (Also just a bit of a pedantic thing. When you're talking about pencils, the Lead is pronounced "led" in english. I know it's not your first language, but I figured I would help with that just to share in the education :) )
