India designed a series of armoured vehicles known as the Armoured Carrier, Wheeled, Indian Pattern (ACV-IP). These vehicles were built using Ford or GMC CMP truck chassis imported from Canada, with the Indian Railways primarily responsible for constructing the armoured hulls.
New Zealand also created their own version of the armoured vehicle. Construction of the armoured hulls started in early 1943 at NZ Railway Workshops in Petone. Production ceased by February 1944, by which time 76 vehicles had been completed, 9 were in the process of being fitted with bodies, and 15 chassis remained untouched.
Information about the NZ carriers' service history during World War II is limited. Only seven vehicles were sent to the Pacific with the 3rd NZ Division, and it is uncertain whether they participated in any of the three operations to secure the islands in the Solomon's archipelago.
A special thanks to the Heritage Fund and Arms and Armour Trust for their generous support in producing this video. And to the Imperial War Museum, Australian War Memorial and National Library of New Zealand for support with archive videos and photos.
We are a charitable organisation set up to preserve, restore and maintain historic military vehicles from both world wars, and to educate the public about their history. Our unique line-up of rare and important military vehicles, including tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, is considered one of the world's finest working collections.

Thank you. I am a New Zealander, but was not aware of this vehicle. I had the pleasure, in 1993, of meeting the man who commanded the EME personnel of the 2nd NZEF whilst I was visiting the QEII Museum-in uniform-at Waiouru. He was an impressive individual and immensely proud of his men and what they had achieved. He told me that during the last hundred miles to Tobruk, the division’s trucks used more oil than petrol and that the horizon was covered in a black cloud of smoke. He also mentioned, without giving the name-because he did not actually need to😁-the situation with a certain brigadier who kept racing forward of his troops, in his command tank. They changed his tank engine for one with less power in order to slow him down BUT he insisted on having that engine replaced. Those engines were susceptible to ‘blow-up’s’ and they blew up two engines in the process!

Neither New Zealand nor Australia were colony's during the second world war. Why do so many Brits still regard this belief that so many countries are still colonies to this day?

A magnificent effort by the Weald Foundation. If you wish to tell the story of the Empire's war efforts you might want to mention that the DOMINION of Canada was the key to the industrial output of the Empire. The chassis for the subject wheeled carrier were Ford of Canada products, not Morris Quads. The original concept was by Ford Davenham on a WOT6 chassis. Realising that they lacked the capacity to take the prototype to production it was handed over to Ford Canada who used the FGT (Ford Gun Tractor) chassis. The Indian and NZ carriers were all built on Ford Canada chassis. The change to the centre driver position was due to adopting the Ford Fox armoured car chassis.

Thank you so much for focusing on the Commonwealth’s contribution to the war effort. Too often we are overlooked. I am a NZer and today (yesterday) is the 80th anniversary for Cassino. I was at a provincial rugby match and no mention was made of it. We are forgetting…….

Look forward to seeing this. You might need an LP2 carrier as well. The wheeled carrier was sent to Korea as part of K Force, however, due to being stored since the end of the second world war, they had problems with them.

One of the photos on this video is one of these vehicles sent to Korea. We also have an Australian LP1 Carrier in the collection waiting restoration.

There used to be some film on KZbin of post war forest fire response procedures at the Golden Downs forestry base near Nelson in New Zealand which featured some skeletal fire appliances seemingly based on a Quad or Blitz chassis but with a very low slung driving position. I cannot find the film now but wondered if the vehicles may be related to these armoured versions ?

They might, as the chassis would be the same.

Nice to see this being covered. I recently made up a toy soldier set for a lad with a Sikh dad, so 4th Indian Div in North Africa. I managed to find a 3D printed carrier (he got two of them) but finding out the details was a nightmare. I was not aware of the later variants with a roof. I look forward to seeing the NZ version once it has been completed, and the LP carriers as well (I'll need to modify some kits I think). Thanks for posting

No. Information shows the ones built were disassembled shortly after and returned to their former use: tractor.
