Amateur cosmetic formulator here, jumping in with a quick analysis of the Dr BS product line. 6 word summary: Very overpriced, no better than drugstore. Slightly longer: The ingredients used in the Dr BS products are nothing special; those ingredients and formulations can be found at all skin care price points. There's nothing special about the products, aside from nice packaging and lots of marketing hype. The company also works hard to get negative media reviews pulled down. If Oprah thinks the Dr BS products are wonderful, fine - she can afford them. For the rest of us, they are extravagant luxuries that really aren't better than the best reasonably priced products. Don't go into debt for these!

A bit of insight into the frequency of relaxer use. It is recommended to relax the roots every 6-8 weeks. That’s about 6 relaxers a year for however many years a person has relaxed hair. Thankfully, the natural hair movement in the early 2000s has decreased sales of relaxers. So many of us wear our hair natural now. I know more naturals than those that are still relaxed.

There is definitely research that has proven that lye relaxers are linked to uterine cancers and fibroids. I’m 54. My mother used lye relaxers in my hair from the age of around 12. Relaxers were used frequently to retouch roots after the original full head relaxer. This was done at least 6 times a year. I relaxed my hair right into my early 30s. I stopped because i was having difficulty maintaining a pregnancy and was worried about what was entering my blood stream. I got pregnant and had a girl by the way. I later started having very painful and heavy periods. Found out i had fibroids. I have had huge fibroid removal procedures 3 times. More research into cause of fibroids suggest lye relaxer use for a prolonged period of time maybe a factor. A lot of Black women aged 30 plus who used lye rekaxers have had fibroids and other uterine problems. Common factor, relaxer use. No lye relaxers are now used commonly now but L’oréal still gave their lye rekaxers & texturises available in Britain, Caribbean and Africa. I can’t remember if Lye is now illegal in products in UK and Europe. But there are plenty of shady shops that will still sell the products. L’oréal know about the clear evidence but they won’t admit it because that’s a big payday. Black women are always at the bottom when it comes to Duty of Care for well being.

The biggest problem is the standard of beauty as well. If straight hair is beautiful and kinky curly hair is not. I had relaxers for at least 20 Years luckily no side affect greatfully.
@Chemist_mama Жыл бұрын
Exactly. For decades, we’ve been told our natural hair is “unprofessional” and “unkempt”. There were even rules about it in some workplaces and sports. We were almost FORCED to straighten our hair, and that standard was ingrained in us as little kids. I’m so glad the natural hair trend has taken off so much, but it makes one think - if the standard was pushed SO hard, and now it’s coming out that these relaxers were actually almost sterilizing people…kinda seems like that’s what they WANTED to happen. In this country of white supremacy ideals, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit.
@gayxman5353 Жыл бұрын

I grew up with using these legacy brands for dance class performances because at that time, they WERE affordable and accessible, but stopped because they seem pretty unethical towards their consumers. As much as I would like to cheer for Revlon's comeback, I am waiting for these brands to get with the times in terms of ethics, consumer safety, and honestly not be such a ripoff. I refuse to pay nearly high-end prices when there is simply minimal "innovation" and 90% marketing and a ridiculous price inflation that exceeds overall economic inflation. I'd rather just chuck over the extra $10 (looking at you L'Oreal. $20 for a foundation does not belong at Walmart) for a higher end product that does have the formula, the color, etc.

So L'oreal is not responsible for funding the huge responsibility of figuring out if relaxers are causing problems. There are tons of brands out there selling relaxers and they all use the same ingredients. Lye, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide etc has been used since the dawn of time, way before loreal became a company. It would be more responsible for loreal to help change the image of curly hair being amazing through their marketing and enhance the culture of embracing your beauty and not needing these harsh abusive products to assimilate into beauty standards.

Brands such as L'Oréal and Pixi ought never be called "drugstore" again. I reckon we could come up with another name, ie : #used #to #be #drugstore - #is #no #more! $15 for a, supposedly, drugstore blusher is shameful. Of course, there's inflation, but L'Oréal, it seems, is suffering more than any other brand - hence the hefty prices. The benefit deal is awesome, however, I seriously doubt that it will travel across the pond to the UK. We never "benefit 😉" from those deals offered in the US. Love you loads 🤍💜🤍💜🤍
